A Teachable Moment: Most Latinos are U.S. Citizens, too!
The racially-charged chant directed at a Kansas State University basketball player, Angel Rodriguez, during last week’s NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament in Pittsburgh is the basis of this teachable moment. This teachable moment is a hard hit for the five University of Southern Mississippi band members involved in the racial chanting.
The University of Southern Mississippi officials decided that five band members involved in the chanting will lose their scholarships and will also have to attend a two-hour cultural sensitivity training. This is the price that the five band members will have to pay after they targeted a Kansas State’s basketball player, Angel Rodriguez, and shouted “Where’s your Green Card?” Ironically, Angel Rodriguez is from Puerto Rico, thus, a U.S. citizen, just like the “Green Card” chanters.
Kudos to the University of Southern Mississippi officials who have the courage and wisdom to right a wrong by eliminating the five offenders’ band scholarships…it is a very hard lesson to learn, but one I’m sure that they will never forget. Moreover, racism and ignorance has no place in our society including sport activities. In reality, most all Latino families have been U.S.
citizens for at least three to six generations. I hope this teachable moment sticks in our nation’s psyche…that most Latina/os are U.S. citizens, too!
