Contemporary Native fashion show debuts in Phoenix on February 27th, 2013

I was invited to attend this and wanted to share this story with my reader from the Examiner. This event is worthy of more attention if you happen to be in the Phoenix area:
Native fashion as seen on Project Runway most recently is taking off with contemporary, edgy offerings that remain rooted in Native American culture. Phoenix, Arizona will host a showcase of contemporary Native design during the Heard Indian Fair week.
A great example of this trend toward the contemporary is the Beyond Buckskin Boutique, brainchild of Jessica Metcalfe. Native American fashion website Beyond Buckskin is teaming up with the new Navajo-operated style blog Presence 4.0 to bring an exciting fashion event to the Phoenix area.
February 27, 2013 is the date for a fashion show that features hand-selected items by nineteen different Native American designers from the Beyond Buckskin Boutique.
Nine of the artists will be in attendance, along with the owner of the Boutique, Jessica Metcalfe, and the co-founders of Presence 4.0: Jaclyn Roessel, Chelsea Chee, and Nanibaa Beck.
Beck, Roessel, and Chee recently launched Presence 4.0 to showcase the ingenuity and creativity that Native American people utilize in styling themselves. They document Native participation in fashion by featuring individuals and their expressive style on the streets (and dirt roads!). This event serves as a public launch for Presence 4.0.
The show will feature a range of designs, including streetwear, couture, Native pop accessories, and high end metal jewelry made by artists who hail from not only the Southwest, but also the Northwest Coast, Northern Plains, and Southeastern Native tribes. An exclusive selection of items from the Boutique will also be available for purchase during the event.
DJ Randy Boogie will be providing the music, while members of the Arizona State University sorority Alpha Pi Omega and fraternity Phi Sigma Nu will be the show’s co-hosts, models and volunteers.
The event will take place on Wednesday, February 27, from 7-10 p.m. at RA Industries located at 15 E. Jackson St. #111 in Phoenix, AZ 85004.
This event is free and open to the public.
