One thing the ousted Sen. Russell Pearce ought to be thankful for was keeping his nose out of jail, but anti-immigration Oklahoma State Representative Randy Terrill has gone to jail for political bribery. The thing Pearce shares in common with Terrill is both were part of a coalition, known as State Legislators for Legal Immigration (SLLI), that included lawmakers from 40 state legislatures.
Oklahoma House Bill 1804, officially known as the Oklahoma Taxpayer and Citizen Protection Act 2007, is a strict anti-illegal immigration law introduced by State Representative Randy Terrill, a Republican from Oklahoma. Terrill is going to jail as Oklahoma County jurors chose a punishment of one year in prison and a $5,000 fine. Terrill appeared on The Lou Dobbs Show with their push against immigrants.
HB-1804 introduced by Terrill made it a felony even to give a person a ride if they know or have grounds to suspect them of being an undocumented immigrant. It also forbids the state from providing education, health care and many other services to illegal immigrants, including infants, and requires police to check the immigration status of anyone “suspected” of being in this country illegally. The likes of HB 1804 reminds Mexican Americans of when Democratic Arizona Representative Kyrsten Sinema introduced a bill that got tougher on immigrants via SB1225 when she was a State Arizona Represenative.
According to News Oklahoma:
Former Oklahoma Rep. Randy Terrill found guilty of political bribery charge
Former state Rep. Randy Terrill was convicted Tuesday of a political bribery charge and immediately jailed.
The 12 jurors found the once-powerful lawmaker guilty after deliberating almost four hours. Jurors chose a punishment of one year in state prison and a $5,000 fine.
An Oklahoma County sheriff’s deputy handcuffed Terrill behind his back immediately after the verdict was announced.
Deputies then led him from the courtroom to a jail elevator.
Terrill, 44, of Moore, was convicted of a felony — offering a bribe to a candidate to withdraw. The maximum possible punishment on the charge was two years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
Fredo Melchor Jr. is an immigration rights activist out of Oklahoma. He used to be a leader for SOMOS REPUBLICANS (a National Republican Group led by Mexican Americans) before Somos Republicans shut down to form SOMOS INDEPENDENTS. Mexican-American leaders of Somos Independents want to be ahead of the curve with regard to organizing the fast growing Independent registered voters who are leaving both Republican and Democratic Party in light of partisanship. Many Mexican American conservatives left the Republican Party in light of the anti-immigrant rhetoric produced by the likes of Senator Russell Pearce and Oklahoma State Rep. Randy Terrill.
In light of Terrill being put into jail, Fred states:
When SB 1804 [anti-immigrant bill] was introduced, many Oklahomans believed it was anti-Oklahoma, but Rep. Randy Terrill was able to push it somehow. Now that he has been found guilty for political bribery and is now jailed, more people know that what he stands for never did represent Oklahoma or true Oklahoma values.
Well stated, Fredo!
Now if we can work on and oust Democrats like Rep. Kyrsten Sinema who also got tough on Arizona immigration law via SB1225, too!
