President of Latina-led Organization Reminds Sen. Ted Cruz why legal immigration reform is important

Thursday, May 23rd, 2013

Mora_James_Law_72__2__reasonably_smallCivil Rights and Immigration Lawyer, Shirl Mora James — President of Somos Independents reminds Senator Ted Cruz why he should support the Gang Of Eight and Legal Immigration Reform:

Unfortunately, Cruz has forgotten that we also have a legacy of slavery, the Indian Wars, Chinese exclusion laws, the Jim Crow Laws, etc., which is why immigration reform is so necessary in regards to immigration law. It is a bit hypocritical for Cruz to be so anti-immigrant when his own father was a Cuban immigrant.

Somos Independents is a Mexican-American and woman-led movement that encourages Latinos to vote and participate in the political process.  It is an organization that supports immigration reform that will help grow our economy while fixing the broken immigration system.

Shirl Mora James made the above statement in light of discovering how Cruz has flip flopped his immigration position.  Republican critics now scoff at the Texan’s opposition to a pathway to citizenship because they know his history.

According to The Atlantic:

Bush, a self-described “compassionate conservative,” went on to win the presidency and champion a law that would have allowed millions of illegal immigrants to earn citizenship. Cruz went on to win election to the Senate from Texas as a hero of the tea party movement and emerge as a sharp critic of a pathway to citizenship in the latest attempt at immigration reform on Capitol Hill.

The route Cruz chose, from working on the reform-minded Bush campaign to voting against the bill Wednesday as a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, confounds some of those who crossed paths with him. His role on the Bush campaign is a lesser-known part of the biography of a politician increasingly viewed as a potential presidential contender in 2016.

“I’m disappointed in Ted because he’s a very bright, articulate lawyer with a substantial base of knowledge about immigration,” said Houston lawyer Charles Foster, who advised the Bush campaign on immigration and said he worked closely with Cruz. “But instead of using that knowledge, he’s acting like a typical politician and just talking about the border being out of control.”

Cuban-American Cruz becomes the convenient “Hispanic” while he stabs the many Mexican-American families living in Texas in the back.  The majority of the Latin population in the United States (almost 70%) and in Texas are of Mexican descent.  He wants the media to go to him on Hispanic issues, but does not vote what the majority of us are screaming for in our communities.

It’s no wonder DREAM Act activists all across the Nation have been referring to him as a “vendido.”

The tail has been wagging the dog, but it will be time for the dog to wag the tail. Cruz has been backstabbing Mexican-American families.

Why does Coca-Cola further hurt Latinos / Mexican-Americans with their contributions to anti – immigrant politicians?

Why does Coca-Cola further hurt Latinos / Mexican-Americans with their contributions to anti – immigrant politicians?

As you may already know, Mexican-Americans make up almost 70% of the entire Latino population pie.  We are the bulk of the “Latino” group — and as such … Mexican Americans ought to take a deeper look into Coca Cola as the thirsty summer season approaches.

Mexican Americans also ought to consider more Mexican-friendly soft drinks, too, and Jarritos is looking better and better to me as a mom, and as a consumer deciding what soft drinks to buy for my children.

Allow me to esplain myself …

America’s Voice has identified the below people as part of the Gang of Hate with regard to the immigration reform bill that is being discussed:

SEN. JEFF SESSIONS (R-AL)

SEN. CHUCK GRASSLEY (R-IA)

SEN. JOHN CORNYN (R-TX)

SEN. TED CRUZ (R-TX)

SEN. DAVID VITTER (R-LA)

Yet, we see Coca-Cola giving to anti-immigrant politicians like Senators Ted Cruz and John Cornyn.

In fact,  Coca-Cola continues to give more in contributions to Republican politicians over the Democratic politicians.

Where is RNC’s Reince Priebus’ “Hispanic” leadership at when Rep. Steve King’s bigotry becomes face of GOP?

future Hispanic voters in southwest 2012

Mexican American / Latin  voters in southwest 2012

Reince Priebus should resign. His lack of leadership will cost the GOP the entire southwest in future Republican elections.

Where is RNC’s Reince Priebus’ “Hispanic” leadership at when Rep. Steve Hispanic-Voters-Leaving-GOPKing’s bigotry becomes the face of GOP?

Mexican-Americans are the fastest growing demographic in our Nation and Priebus is still missing in action doing everything that he can to not grow the party.

Priebus is not growing the Party as he turns a blind eye to the likes of Congressman Steve King and Cuban American Senator Ted Cruz.

Here is what Rep. Steve King is up to:

Steve King: ‘Senate Immigration Bill Is Worse Than Obamacare’

For the record:  The Senate Immigration Bill is a bipartisan bill that is supported by Republicans, Independents and Democrats.  It is a LEGAL method that will fix our clearly broken immigration system.

What can Priebus do to grow the Party?

Reince Priebus can start by signaling change to the RNC’s newly adopted anti-immigrant platform that was created and supported by Kris Kobach in the Summer of 2012.

Southern GOP Senators of Alabama, Louisiana, & Texas Ignore Northern Border Al Qaeda Terrorist Plot of April 2013 During Immigration Hearings

Thursday, May 9th, 2013

Where are the so called pro national security people at with regard to the entire border of our country?

Did you know that Sens. Jeff Sessions (R-AL), Chuck Grassley (R-IA), John Cornyn (R-TX), Ted Cruz (R-TX), and David Vitter (R-LA) have not taken any action with requesting additional funds regarding northern border security despite a U.S. and Canada foil Al Qaeda terrorist plot to derail New York to Toronto passenger train that occurred just last month in April 2013?

Surely these southern senators know the United States has undocumented Canadians in our Nation, too.

Anti-immigrant hardliners like Sens. Jeff Sessions (R-AL), Chuck Grassley (R-IA), John Cornyn (R-TX), Ted Cruz (R-TX), and David Vitter (R-LA) have taken strong stances against legal comprehensive immigration reform and many did not support the DREAM Act vote of 2010.    Some of these anti-immigrant hardliners have taken shameful stances in equating the Mexican border to terrorism, but where are they at when it comes to the porous Canadian border and actual Al Qaeda as recent as last month?

As a proud woman veteran of our Armed Forces who served during Gulf War I, I believe we should protect all of our borders that touch Canada, the Pacific Ocean, and the Atlantic Ocean, too. Mexican-American veterans are paying very close attention to the actions of our southern Senators as it relates to the Gang of Eight Legal Immigration Reform — specifically in states with heavy Mexican-American population.   2014 and 2016 is just around the corner, and there are approximately 500,000 new “Latin” up and coming of age voters every single year.

Grassley, Vitter, Cruz and Cornyn more concerned with the brown border instead of the one where Al

Sen. Marco Rubio Denounces Heritage Immigration Study — Sen. Ted Cruz shows no leadership on Gang of 8 Immigration Despite the Millions of Mexican-Americans Living in Texas

Kris Kobach is the legal arm of Arizona’s SB1070 and he is affiliated with the Heritage Foundation

I believe in giving credit where credit is due.

As a Mexican-American, I am glad the Cuban-American Senator Marco Rubio is denouncing the Heritage Immigration Study.  We are glad to see this because Kris Kobach was the legal architect of Arizona’s SB1070, and also a non staff member at The Heritage Foundation.

Florida’s Sen Rubio stated:

“Their argument is based on a single premise, which I think is flawed,” Rubio told reporters. “That is these people are disproportionately poor because they have no education and they will be poor for the rest of their lives in the U.S. Quite frankly that’s not the immigration experience in the U.S. That’s certainly not my family’s experience in the U.S. The folks described in that report are my family. My mother and dad didn’t graduate high school and I would not say they were a burden on the United States…My parents were a lot better off 25 years after they emigrated here than they were when they first got here. And their children certainly have been. I still think we’re that country. And I still think we can be that country and even more in the future, so I guess I just have a lot more belief in the future of the country than some of the folks that helped prepare [the report].”

Rubio is from Florida showing leadership while we are seeing the Texas Cuban-American Senator Ted Cruz still missing in action

The tail has been wagging the dog, but it will be time for the dog to wag the tail. Rubio had better do better than to offer Mexicans and undocumented Latinos table scraps.

with regard to the Gang of 8 comprehensive immigration reform that will fix the clearly broken immigration system.  Did you know that Texas shares 64% of the southern border with Mexico yet there is no leadership from Cruz?

Why isn’t Cuban-American Ted Cruz showing CIR leadership in his own State that is home to millions and millions of Mexican-Americans?!

Almost half of the Texas population is of Mexican descent, yet the Cuban – American Senator Ted Cruz doesn’t seem to care to support the Gang of 8 legal immigration fix.

Sen. Ted Cruz who is the son of a Cuban immigrant has family in the United States that have migrated to our Country and have benefited from privileged Cuban amnesty via the Cuban Adjustment Act.

You will hear Cruz try to play your heart strings when he tells a (pretend sob story) on how his daddy came to the States with $100 bucks sown into his underwear.

According to FOX NEWS:

Cruz’s father Rafael is a pastor outside Dallas. He fought with Fidel Castro’s rebels in Cuba before Castro took power and eventually embraced communism, and the elder Cruz fled to the U.S. with nothing but $100 sowed into his underwear.

But according to the inflation calculator, $100.00 back then is equivalent to $826.21 today.  That is a whole helluva lot more money than the dying immigrant crossing the desert comes here with.  Many immigrants crossing the desert die of dehydration.

Here’s a question for you: Why does the Gang of 8 immigration comprehensive bill isolate it’s so-called border security to just the southern border with Mexico?

Why is the Gang 0f 8 putting $3 billion additional dollars to watch the Mexican border but not the Canadian border, too?

Did you know we have undocumented Canadians in our Nation, too?

Why not put additional border security on the Canadian border and the Floridian border since drugs are trafficked through the Caribbean, too?

Indeed a $180 million drug submarine bust was made in the Carribean.

In fact just last month, 2 suspected Al Qaeda terrorists were busted in Canada before they could wreak havoc on the rails by blowing up a New York-to-Toronto passenger train.

As a proud woman veteran of our Armed Forces, I believe we should protect all of our borders that touch Canada, the Pacific Ocean, and the Atlantic Ocean, too!

Why are we just focusing in on the “brown” border?  See the hypocrisy of our elected and public officials?

See below from America’s Voice with regard to anti-immigrant hardliners like Sens. Jeff Sessions (R-AL), Chuck Grassley (R-IA), John Cornyn (R-TX), Ted Cruz (R-TX), and David Vitter (R-LA).  These aforementioned Senators did not support the DREAM Act / Gang of 8 comprehensive immigration reform plan that affects millions of Mexican-Americans.

DREAM Act activist Cesar Vargas states:

Said Cesar Vargas, DREAMer and Director of DRM Action Coalition, “As DREAMers, we see a genuine effort by many Republicans to debate and finally resolve the issue of our outdated immigration system. But fringe voices like Senators Cruz, Sessions, Cornyn, Vitter, and Grassley have resorted to baseless attacks on immigrant and Latino families. Their main objective is to kill the bill. We are asking all Senators to not be naive and mark them for what they really are: obstructionist members of the ‘Gang of Hate.’”

From America’s Voice:

Meet the Senate “Gang of Hate”
by Pili Tobar

Now that you’re familiar with the members of the bipartisan Senate Gang of Eight, get ready to meet the Senate “Gang of Hate.”

With the Senate immigration mark-up set to kick off this week, new profiles by America’s Voice Education Fund shed light on key immigration reform opponents in the Senate – Sens. Jeff Sessions (R-AL), Chuck Grassley (R-IA), John Cornyn (R-TX), Ted Cruz (R-TX), and David Vitter (R-LA)—and highlight their deep ties to anti-immigrant groups as well as their record on immigration reform and other issues.

On a press call today, America’s Voice Education Fund alongside fellow immigration advocates reviewed the profiles of the “Gang of Hate” and their accomplices and further previewed what we expect to see from these characters as the Senate Judiciary Committee prepares to take up the bipartisan Gang of Eight bill this week.

Aaron Patrick Flanagan, Director of Research at the Center for New Community, who played an instrumental role in compiling research for the profiles said, “What the research behind the ‘Gang of Hate’ profiles reflects is that, for years, these Senators have been content to represent a small cadre of anti-immigrant special interest groups—the Federation for American Immigration Reform, NumbersUSA, and the Center for Immigration Studies—in Washington, DC, but not the best-interests of their constituents. The ‘Gang of Hate’ is willing to conduct private business with anti-immigrant special interest groups by entertaining their lobbyists, adopting their messages, and utilizing their factually inaccurate research.”

In addition to the Senate “Gang of Hate” members, the profiles also highlight key allies and collaborators of the Senate “Gang of Hate.”  The Senators’ “brain trust” (or “drain trust”), includes Mark Krikorian, head of the anti-immigrant “think tank” Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) and the intellectual author of self-deportation; Kris Kobach, Kansas Secretary of State and author of the Arizona and Alabama “show me your papers” laws; Chris Crane, president of the ICE union who has spent the last several months complaining that President Obama’s prosecutorial discretion policies are harming his agents; former Senator and current Heritage Foundation president Jim DeMint (R-SC); and finally, John Tantonthe father of the modern anti-immigrant movement.

As the Senate Judiciary Committee mark-up commences, all eyes will be on Republican leaders to see if they continue to forge a new way forward supported by the vast majority of the American people or let the “Gang of Hate” dominate the debate and derail reform.

According to Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice Education Fund, “While the Senate ‘Gang of Hate’ is a playful designation that riffs off the Senate ‘Gang of Eight,’ there are serious policy issues at stake.  The named opponents of immigration reform not only want to scuttle the bill, they want policies that ramp up enforcement and block a path to immigration status and citizenship.  This adds up to ‘self-deportation,’ the radical position advanced by Mitt Romney and created by the anti-immigrant groups.  And self-deportation means making life so intolerable and impossible for undocumented immigrants and their legal relatives that those that don’t get picked up for deportation should pick up and self-deport.  This agenda, which is supported by a small percentage of Americans generally and conservatives specifically, does not represent who we are as a nation nor can it be allowed to thwart the best chance Congress has had in years to solve this problem once and for all.”

Mexican-American Rep. Joaquin Castro takes on Cuban-American and anti-immigrant Senator Ted Cruz

Monday, May 6th, 2013

Julian Castro Chicano MOvementFREAKIN’ AWESOME!

Finally!

I have been  waiting for this and finally we see Texas Rep. Joaquin Castro who is pro legal immigration and is supporting ideas that will economically benefit American families across our Nation.  Mexican-American Castro is taking on the Cuban-American Senator Ted Cruz who is not friendly to legal immigration reform.  Cruz is not considered friendly towards Mexican-Americans because he has taken a harsh stance against our children and brethren via the DREAM Act.

You see, Castro understands that almost half of Texas are of Mexican descent and he knows the disastrous anti-immigration impact Ted Cruz brings to the economic table.

This is precisely why I really like  Texas Represenative Joaquin Castro, and I believe he would make an excellent Vice Presidential candidate in the near future that could politically re-align the entire southwest with regard to the growing Mexican-American demographic for any political party that embraces him.

As a Mexican-American … I am tired of the likes of Ted Cruz who becomes “Hispanic” when it benefits him.  Cruz has taken

every opportunity to be a thorn in the side of the much legal comprehensive immigration reform that is needed.  He is against the DREAM Act even though his Cuban immigrant family members benefited from privileged Cuban amnesty via the Cuban Adjustment Act.  Cruz wants to shut the door behind him and punish other hardworking immigrants that have helped the agricultural community and our United States economy.

From the Dallas News:

The freshman Democrat from San Antonio also took a swipe at Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Houston.

Cruz was in South Carolina Friday at the state GOP’s Silver Elephant Dinner.

Russell Contreras: Cinco de Mayo, the Chicano Movement, David and Goliath and St. Patrick’s Day

Happy Cinco, Amigos!

I want to share a great story by AP writer Russell Contreras since a bunch of us “Messicans” viven aqui in the great Southwest.

An ol’ story about Cinco de Mayo and how it evolved.

FULL AP story can be read here:

Often mistaken for Mexican Independence Day (that’s Sept. 16), Cinco de Mayo commemorates the 1862 Battle of Puebla between the victorious ragtag army of largely Mexican Indian soldiers against the invading French forces of Napoleon III. Mexican Americans, during the Chicano Movement of the 1970s, adopted the holiday for its David vs. Goliath storyline as motivation for civil rights struggles in Texas and California.

Over the years, the holiday has been adopted by beer companies as a way to penetrate the growing Latino market, even as the historical origins of the holiday remain largely forgotten.

David Hayes-Bautista, a professor of medicine and health services at UCLA and author of the newly released “El Cinco de Mayo: An American Tradition,” said the holiday’s history in the U.S. goes back to the Gold Rush when thousands of immigrants from Mexico, Central and South America came to California during the Civil War.

According to Spanish-language newspapers at the time, this first group of multinational Latinos on U.S. soil identified with the Union Army’s fight against the Confederacy and often wrote pieces about the evils of slavery. Hayes-Bautista said these Latino immigrants were concerned about the Union’s lack of progress and Napoleon III’s interests in helping the South.

“It wasn’t until the news came about the Battle of Puebla that they got the good news they wanted,” said Hayes-Bautista. “Since Napoleon III was linked to the Confederacy, they saw the victory as the first sign that their side could win.”

They didn’t, of course, at least not for a few years. French forces took over Mexico after the Battle of Puebla, and installed Habsburg Archduke Maximilian as Emperor of Mexico. He was captured by Mexican forces five years later and put to death.

But in the years that followed, Latinos in California and the U.S. Northwest celebrated Cinco de Mayo with parades of people dressed in Civil War uniforms and gave speeches about the significance of the Battle of Puebla in the larger struggle for abolition, said Hayes-Bautista.

The Cinco de Mayo-Civil War link remained until the Mexican Revolution, which sparked another wave of Mexican immigration to the U.S. Those immigrants had no connection to Cinco de Mayo – except that U.S. Latinos celebrated it.

“That’s when it became about David vs. Goliath, Indians beating a European force, and it took on a new meaning,” said Hayes-Bautista. “The Civil War ties disappeared.”

The date received another jolt during World War II during the U.S. government’s “Good Neighborhood Policy” aimed at building good relationships with Mexico and during the Chicano Movement, when Mexican American activists adopted the day to reinforce civil rights demands. Two police beatings of Cinco de Mayo revelers – one in Houston in 1978 and the other in Washington DC in 1991 – resulted in riots and sparked protests and calls for reforms from Latino advocates.

The holiday spread outside of the American Southwest as more Latinos moved to new areas around the country. Alyssa Gutierrez, 35, a teacher who is originally from Robstown, Texas but now lives in New York’s Harlem neighborhood, said Cinco de Mayo was barely noticed when she moved to New York in 1998. “Now there are Mexican restaurants on almost every block and all do something on Cinco de Mayo, usually around a boxing match,” said Gutierrez.

Jody Agius Vallejo, a sociology professor at the University of Southern California and author of “Barrios to Burbs: The Making of the Mexican-American Middle Class,” said Cinco de Mayo is now used by assimilated Mexican Americans as an easy way for them to showcase their ethnic identity.

“It’s very similar to how Irish-Americans celebrate St. Patrick’s Day,” said Vallejo. “One way they can honor their ethnicity is to celebrate this day, even when most don’t know why.”

But not all buy in. “To others,” she added, “this holiday is kind of viewed as a joke because they feel it’s their culture that is being appropriated and exploited.”

Hayes-Bautista said because the theme and focus around Cinco de Mayo has transformed a number of times, it won’t be surprising if it changes again.

“No one has owned Cinco de Mayo,” said Hayes-Bautista. “And no one ever will.”  FULL STORY>>>

Legal Immigration Reform Plan Discussed on Libertarian Attorney for Freedom Radio Show

Marc Victor — high profile Arizona attorney who has been commenting on the Jodi Arias case via Arizona media outlets

I was invited to discuss the legal immigration plan supported by the Gang of 8 on the Attorney For Freedom Show a couple of days ago, and you can listen to the recording here.

Marc Victor is a high profile attorney in Arizona who realizes immigration ought to be fixed, and while I don’t agree with all of his ideas — I felt it was important to address what I do and do not support with regard to immigration reform since Victor has several Libertarian and Republican listeners.

I did take the opportunity to nail the Texas U.S. Senators who are missing in action — from the state that shares 64% of the entire southern border length with Mexico.  Where are they?  Texas John Cornyn is on the Finance committee that oversees ports of entry, trade and tariffs — yet he is nowhere to be found on the push for legal immigration.

We also spoke about Cuban immigrants receive government benefits once their wet foot touches dry land because Libertarians do not like any hints of welfare programs/government benefits.  I reminded Victor that most immigrants do not receive the government benefits that are afforded to Cuban immigrants.  Indeed Texas U.S. Senator and Cuban-American Ted Cruz has had family that benefited from Cuban privileged amnesty via the Cuban Adjustment Act, and it is unfortunate that the freshman will not follow the steps of Senator Marco Rubio of Florida.  At least Rubio is working towards legal immigration — and Ted Cruz is not.

Tune into the May 1st, 2013 recorded show with regard to immigration here.
