Poll: Ariz. immigration law hurts Romney in key states and why Rubio can’t save the GOP

Thursday, April 26th, 2012

Of course we knew this all along so this is no surprise to us. I tried to warn the Republican Party of the impending train wreck with regard to the fastest growing demographic in the nation. They didn’t listen to me and now they are going to have to face the music with regard to how Mexicans will vote in the greater Southwest. The only chance the GOP has to save itself, is to align themselves with someone like Abel Maldonado (former Lt. Gov of California and who supports legal immigration reform).

Poll: Ariz. immigration law hurts Romney in key states

Public Policy Polling and Project New America are out with a new poll of Hispanic voters in Nevada, Florida and New Mexico, finding that Mitt Romney’s immigration stance isn’t doing him any favors in those states …  full story here.

Rubio is not going to help Mitt Romney either because Rubio supported Arizona’s harsh SB1070 law the way Romney has.

Janelle with the Huffington Post writes:

Marco Rubio’s Evolving Immigration Story May Brand Him Latino Leader Or Misleader

……

Today, Cubans and their desendants, such as Rubio, comprise about 3.5 percent of the nation’s Latino population and 4.5 percent of eligible Hispanic voters, according to the most recent Census data. The same data indicate that Mexicans and Mexican-Americans make up about 63 percent of the Hispanic population and nearly 60 percent of the nation’s Latino electorate.

That’s the backdrop that will shape the next presidential election, said DeeDee Garcia Blase, a Mexican-American who lives in Arizona and founded Somos Republicans (We Are Republicans) before leaving the party last year and declaring herself an Independent.

Garcia Blase says she left the GOP after Rubio sponsored federal legislation that she regarded as a direct attack on the country’s mostly Central American undocumented immigrants. Rubio has also criticized President Ronald Regan’s 1986 amnesty program for undocumented immigrants, Garcia Blase said. “The bottom line is, the party knows that they cannot win without the Latin vote,” she said. “But Rubio already drove a wedge between the Cuban-American and Mexican-American communities. I don’t think Mexicans are going to buy Marco Rubio and his new story.”

Why Marco Rubio can’t save the GOP

By Ruben Navarrette Jr., CNN Contributor
…..This story is important because it drives a wedge between Rubio and the voters he is supposed to be able to deliver to the Republican Party. When you’re a Cuban-American politician who is being put forth by your party to help get votes from Latino voters — the majority of whom are Mexican or Mexican-American — things can get complicated. When it comes to immigrating to the United States, Cubans get preferred status. Thanks to the Cuban Adjustment Act, which was enacted in 1966 — or four years after Rubio’s grandfather came to the United States — Cuban refugees who flee the Island and reach the U.S. shoreline have a clear path to legal residency and eventual citizenship.

Mexican immigrants aren’t so fortunate. So when Cuban-Americans do what Rubio has done since arriving in the Senate 16 months ago and take a hardline against illegal immigration, Mexicans and Mexican-Americans have been known to cringe. After all, that’s easy for them to say.  FULL STORY.

Mexican American population in United States

Former AG Gonzales: Rubio not a wise VP pick

Saturday, April 14th, 2012

The Tequila Party agrees with former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.  Rubio is a mere junior Senator with little executive experience and Rubio as VEEP would prevent the Republican Party from blaming the direction of this Country on President Obama (who was also once a junior Senator when elected as President).  President Obama would now have 4 years of executive and federal experience, but Rubio is still a political virgin at the federal level.

Marco Rubio is received well among Cubans which makes up only 3% of the total Hispanic population; but he is not received well amongst those of Mexican descent.  Mexican-Americans make up of almost 70% of the total Hispanic population.  Cuban-American Rubio created a wedge with those of Mexican descent when he embraced Arizona’s harsh anti-immigrant laws and when he did not support the DREAM act during a time we needed him to support it. He is supported by Tea Party extremists and the Tea Party is kryptonite to Latinos, centrists, moderates and reasonable thinkers.

Those of Mexican descent seem to really understand and feel the empathy more than Cubans because Cubans receive Cuban amnesty and Mexicans do not receive amnesty.  Several Mexican families are being forced apart while mothers and fathers  are detained when caught working at fast food restaurants or in agricultural fields.  The Latino community is yearning for legal immigration reform, and emerging leaders must arise from those affected the most (the Mexicans) which is a sizable chunk of the Latin population.

Former AG Gonzales: Rubio not a wise VP pick

Boston (CNN) – Florida Sen. Marco Rubio would not be a wise pick for number two on the GOP ticket this year, former U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales told CNN Saturday.

Rubio is not ready to be president, Gonzales said, and the vice president “must be ready on day one.”

Latino Group To Sen. Marco Rubio: Where is your plan to do the “right” thing?

Monday, April 2nd, 2012

For Immediate Release – 2 April 2012

Where is Senator Marco Rubio’s “Right” Immigration Plan

Phoenix, AZ — After meeting in person with valedictorian Daniela Pelaez from Florida who was facing deportation, Senator Rubio restated his opposition to the DREAM ACT by saying: “it is the wrong way to do the right thing.”

The Tequila Party Movement calls on Senator Rubio to show us his way of doing the right thing. We want action and not empty words. We ask Senator Rubio to reach out to Senator Menendez who has crafted an immigration plan and roll up his sleeves to work for all American people and in a bi-partisan fashion to give our nation sensible immigration reform that promotes legal migration.  Make our country globally competitive for the 21st century and offer an earned path for legalization for the unauthorized residents who have otherwise lived within the law.  The time to act is now. We cannot wait after elections.  We cannot lose another generation of graduating, talented seniors and let them live without hope in our country which is full of possibilities.   It is time to move this policy issue out of the extremist politics which has hijacked CIR for years and instead promote good policy.

We want to see Senator Rubio’s leadership and plan to see his right way of doing the right thing. We note that Senator Rubio’s father, mother and brother entered the United States upon the invitation of a relative, what he has called:  “chain migration”.   Thereafter, they all enjoyed the benefits of the Cuban Adjustment Act.    Today, if a Cuban national crosses the U.S. Mexican border illegally, a year after such entrance pursuant to this generous act, he/she can become a legal permanent resident.    Many individuals would call that “amnesty”.

The right thing to do is to support a full legal immigration reform, but due to the lack of leadership at the Hill, we are willing to use stepping stones to accomplish the full enchilada.  Typically a President will address a legal immigration reform plan after he is elected into his/her second term (as demonstrated with former President George W. Bush) and we cannot take chances on waiting anymore.

Remember when Florida Senator Marco Rubio supported Arizona’s harsh anti-immigrant law?

Friday, March 9th, 2012

The Tequila Party Movement is asking Tea Party favorite — Sen. Marco Rubio for  his blueprint as to what he would do or what the Republicans will do to fix immigration in a comprehensive way. He is against the dream act but has made no attempt to reach across the aisle with Senator Bob Menenedez’ introduction to full blown comprehensive reform.  We want to know where Marco Rubio’s solution is.  All we see is the same political partisanship and it’s time for reform since we have met former President George W. Bush’s Secure Fence Act of 2006.
Where is Senator Marco Rubio’s blueprint?

By Continuing to Oppose the DREAM Act, Sen. Rubio Squanders Opportunity to Lead

Yesterday, Miami-area high school valedictorian Daniela Pelaez and her sister, Dayana, came to Washington to meet with U.S. Representatives and Senators from Florida.  The sisters, both of whom would benefit from the DREAM Act, recently won an administrative reprieve from deportation for two years.

After their meeting with Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL) – a cosponsor of the DREAM Act who had personally called Secretary Janet Napolitano to ask the Department of Homeland Security to halt the sisters’ scheduled deportations – he described Daniela and Dayana as “two brave young ladies.”

After their meeting with Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), however, the Senator reiterated his opposition to the DREAM Act.  He said the DREAM Act is “the wrong way to do the right thing,” and then went on to suggest that the legislation would “reward or encourage illegal immigration by granting amnesty.”

A recent Fox News Latino/Latin Insights poll found that 90% of Latino voters support the DREAM Act, which their write-up described as “legislation that would provide a path to citizenship for undocumented youths who attend college or serve in the military.”  The polling also documented the severe trouble the Republican Party is having in appealing to Latino voters, finding that none of the Republican presidential contenders received the support of more than 14% of Latino voters in a potential general election matchup against President Obama.  Citing the polling, many leading news commentators and pundits noted that the immigration issue is the single biggest driver of the GOP’s tarnished image among Latino voters.

According to Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice, “Clearly, Senator Rubio is out of step with the vast majority of Latino voters by opposing DREAM.  Yet the question continues to be ‘why is the Senator opposed?’  The DREAM Act not only has the support of the vast majority of Latinos, but it also has strong support from non-Latino voters, educators, and military, faith, and business leaders.  Allowing talented young people who have grown up in America to become citizens and join the military or go to college should be a no-brainer.  Senator Rubio insists it can’t pass because it doesn’t have enough support in Congress.  But it doesn’t have enough support in Congress because elected leaders such as Rubio have failed to step up and support it.  This is not only a self-fulfilling prophesy, but an opportunity squandered to lead his party in a new direction and begin to repair its fractured relationship with Latino voters.”

“No Somos Rubios” goes NATIONAL and viral on Latin media via Hispanic social networking

Friday, January 27th, 2012

Remember when Senator Marco Rubio kicked us when Latinos were down and out during a difficult Latino era when the Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer passed the harsh anti-immigrant law — SB 1070?  We are now seeing Senator Marco Rubio taking a populist approach on the DREAM Act.  He is clearly treating our youth like political footballs.  Senator Marco Rubio kicked us when we were down when he stated his support for Arizona’s harsh anti-immigrant law and he stated multiple times that he was against the DREAM Act.  Now that the 2012 Presidential election cycle is up and both parties need the Latino vote, we are hearing opportunist and populist Marco Rubio  sing a different tune.

From Adriana Maestas in POLITICS365:

Beyond Florida, should Marco Rubio become the Vice Presidential candidate, he will likely face trouble out west where there are larger Mexican American and other Latino populations most impacted by the immigration issue. Cuban Americans and Puerto Ricans in Florida are less impacted by immigration because of their status; Cuban Americans have the Cuban Adjustment Act and Puerto Ricans are US citizens by birth.

Mitt Romney has same immigration policies as Arizona extremist Russell Pearce

Tuesday, January 24th, 2012

Mitt Romney and Russell Pearce have quite a bit in common.

Both favor draconian anti-immigrant SB 1070 laws.  Both have ties to Kris Kobach who supports white nationalist views imposed by John Tanton and NumbersUSA.  Both are members of the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) a/k/a Mormon Church, yet they will not support the the UTAH COMPACT which is modeled after the Mayflower Compact.   Mitt Romney should have done the right thing and supported the Utah Compact from the beginning.  He promised to veto the DREAM Act and committed the ultimate Latino sin when he said that.  We praise the LDS Church for taking a lead on the Utah Compact and it is an absolute travesty that Romney will not do the right and compassionate thing.

When will these Republicans learn that extremism never pays?

From the Washington Post:

Pressed on immigration policy Romney says he favors ‘self-deportation’

By Associated Press, Published: January 23

TAMPA, Fla. — Mitt Romney said in Monday’s GOP debate that he favors what he calls “self-deportation” over policies that require the federal government to round up illegal immigrants and return them to their home countries.  Full Story.

Senator Marco Rubio’s healthy investment

A Senator’s healthy investment

By Miguel Sarmiento
In matters of housing, 2005 was a great year for Senator Marco Rubio. At that time, and contrary to market trends, in the middle of the housing bubble, of the Real Estate explosion across the country, the Senator managed to buy a house previously sold for more than a million dollars for almost half that price. By year’s end Rubio had three properties to his name.

Today he has only two: The house he bought around the corner from his old home – which he sold at a healthy profit of $209 thousand dollars, and one in Leon County, in Tallahassee, where he lived with his colleague Congressman David Rivera.

According to most conservative estimates there are, in the United States of America, about one million 500 thousand homeless people. According to other institutions dedicated to helping the homeless, these figures may go up to three million 500 thousand people without a place to call Home – 40% of them veterans of the United States Armed Forces.

One third of these people are children and that 30% of the total number are in Florida. These numbers translate as follows: There are in the State of Florida between 450,000 to 1,050.000 homeless, of which 135,000 to 315,000 are minors and have no health insurance. From these figures, two thirds live in the streets of Florida, not in shelters already overcrowded.

According to the Mortgage Bankers Association, every three months, 250,000 new families enter into foreclosure and one child in every classroom in America is at risk of losing his/her home because their parents are unable to pay their mortgage.

Similarly, a study conducted by the MetLife insurance company in 2003, found that 52% of the employees, live paycheck to paycheck and, no matter whether you’re homeless or not, almost 50 million Americans have no health insurance.

A look at the money received by the political campaign of Senator Marco Rubio in recent years, one can see, besides the large number of lawyers and lobbyists, that the Health and Real Estate industries contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars. Hopefully these contributions have nothing to do with the healthy Senator’s real estate transactions.

Meanwhile, in Leon County, in Florida’s capital, a house belonging to a Senator who has no military record, who earns $174,000 salary paid by the taxpayers, and includes an excellent health and benefits package for himself and his family, sits empty.

Members of his Republican Party Tea demand that the public sector cuts benefits, such as Unemployment, Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid … Where should we start … What do you think?

Spanish:

El lado oscuro de un senador Rubio

By Miguel Sarmiento
