Who should independent registered Latinos prefer in the CD9 Arizona race?

Thursday, July 26th, 2012

Radio Bilingue wanted me to chime in on the Arizona Congressional CD 9 race for their Spanish program,  and as an independent woman voter — I told the Spanish news program I prefer Andrei Cherny over  all of the others.

I have a lot of respect for Phoenix City Councilman Michael Nowakowski, and he endorsed former Clinton White House official Andrei Cherny for Congress.  Therefore, I’m signaling to woman and independent registered voters, too, that Andrei Cherny is the best person to fight for Hispanic and middle-class families.

Independent registered voters in Arizona CAN vote in the primary elections.  All you have to do is request  a Republican or Democratic ballot in order to do so.  As independent registered voters, I hope you will request the Democratic ballot to vote in the Democratic Primary election on August 28, 2012 and cast your ballot for Cherny.  I believe he will help restore sanity to our State of Arizona.

From the Cherny campaign site:

Nowakowski Endorses Cherny for Congress

May 2, 2012

PHOENIX – Phoenix City Councilman Michael Nowakowski endorsed former Clinton White House official Andrei Cherny for Congress today, explaining that he is the best person to fight for Hispanic and middle-class families.

“Andrei Cherny grew up the son of immigrants who didn’t speak much English, and he understands what it’s like for parents to work two jobs to make ends meet,” said Nowakowski.  “I know Andrei will continue to do great things for working families because he shares our values – and he’ll fight for us in Congress.”

In addition to serving on the Phoenix City Council, Nowakowski is the vice president of communications for Radio Campesina, a network of nonprofit Spanish-language radio stations.

Cherny said he’s proud to have Nowakowski’s support.

“Having the backing of such strong, well-respected Arizona leader is an honor,” he said. “I look forward to continuing to work with Councilman Nowakowski to rebuild America’s middle class.”

BREAKING: Janet Napolitano said eligible undocumented immigrants can apply for deferred deportation August 15, 2012

Thursday, July 19th, 2012

Breaking News Regarding Deferred Action.

Napolitano said eligible undocumented immigrants can start applying for deferred deportation Aug. 15, and that we can expect more information on the policy Aug. 1

From executive director of the National Tequila Party Movement (and Irish undocumented immigrant activists), Margaret Reyes:

DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano testified before Congress about Deferred Action for Dreamers. Her testimony provided a few new pieces of information about the program that was announced on June 15, 2012.

Upper Age Eligibility: Applicants younger than 31 on June 15, 2012 will be eligible to apply. DHS had previously indicated that applicants had to be not over 30 in order to be eligible, leaving open the questions of whether that meant a person would be eligible until his or her 31st birthday, and whether DHS would consider the person’s age as of the date of application or as of June 15, 2012.

Application Process:An application procedures announcement is anticipated to be issued on August 1, 2012

Application Submission: The application process is expected to begin on August 15, 2012

Fees: $465 fee for both work authorization and biometrics. It is likely there will be a separate deferred action application fee but unclear if there is a fee waiver option

From Fronteras Desk:

Secretary Napolitano testified before the House Judiciary Committee, mostly related to deferred deportation and temporary work permits for undocumented immigrants brought here as children. Unsurprisingly, Democrats praised Napolitano and Republicans were harshly critical. Arizona Congressman Ben Quayle said the new policy could create precedent for other agencies to disregard the law.

“What can we do as legislators to make sure that we get the laws that are passed actually, fully enforced by the executive branch?” Quayle asked.

“You know, Representative, I’ve been an executive my whole career, so it’s really hard for me to get into that legislative mindset. I’ll leave that for you,” Napolitano replied. “But I will say, we are enforcing the laws. We’ve removed more people from this country than any prior administration over a similar time period.”

Napolitano said eligible undocumented immigrants can start applying for deferred deportation Aug. 15, and that we can expect more information on the policy Aug. 1.

Photos: Vigil for “I am Joaquin Luna” event in Texas on April 2, 2012, as others march for Travyon

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

Here are some photos of the vigil that was held for the I Am Joaquin Luna vigil in Texas under the leadership of Tania Chavez. Joaquin was a DREAMer who committed suicide because he felt he had no other option and on Monday, April 2, 2012, the Minority Affairs Council hosted a vigil in remembrance of Joaquin Luna. While our hearts mourn with those marching for Travyon in Florida, we are reminded of Joaquin at the vigil in the southwestern part of our Country.

We have been given permission to use these photos by Ana Mendoza and the Joaquin Luna family.
