The 2013 Legal immigration reform bill is a major step forward in securing our Nation because only after everyone is registered and documented will we know who is in our Nation and where we can find them. We know that once we fix the broken immigration system, and once we document all immigrants — then they can feel safe to help law enforcement agencies to target criminal activity without the fear of deportation when they report suspicious activity to the law enforcement authorities. Therefore, bringing the immigrants out of the shadows will only strengthen our Nation’s security.

Will the Republican Representatives learn the lessons of 2012 when it was discovered women and Mexican-American / Latinos voted overwhelmingly for President Obama?
If House Republicans are going to continue to drag their feet in fixing the broken immigration system; Mexican-American / Latin voters will drag their feet when the GOP is asking for voting support.
Mexican-Americans account for almost 70% of the entire “Latin” population pie, and they are also the fastest growing population in the country. We await the United States Senate as we compile a list of those who stood on the right side of immigration vs. those who do not stand on the right side of immigration. “DREAMers” may not be able to vote, but you can bet your bottom dollar that Chicano / Mexican – Americans can vote on behalf of those who aspire to live the American dream. Mexican-Americans who can vote are already looking ahead to 2016, because we are well aware of the approximate 500,000 new coming of age Latin voters per year. The likes of Rep. Steve King and Lamar Smith are putting the GOP on the path to extinction.
Now more than ever we are telling our members to call Congress in an effort to fix the clearly broken immigration system. We must support LEGAL comprehensive immigration reform because immigration is protected under the supremacy clause of our United States Constitution.
Shirl Mora James, a Civil Rights and Immigration Attorney who is also President of Somos Independents states:
This is a much needed step in the right direction for all our families who are aspiring Americans from across the world. We applaud the Gang of 8 U.S. Senators for their courage, foresight and their hard work which begins to address the much needed comprehensive immigration reform.
