Any president promoting a woman to the JCS during his Presidential cycle would give many of us a sigh of relief and encouragement. It would be helpful knowing that more women are part of the “advisory committee”, which helps plan joint operations and resolutions of military problems because, as it stands, there appears to be too much testosterone fueling those key decisions.

It would be helpful for us to see balance at a strategic leadership level.

Some in Congress want changes in military law as a result of sex scandals

Members of Congress said they are so angry about the crescendo of sex-crime scandals in the armed forces that they are considering fundamental changes to military law and other measures that the Pentagon has resisted for years.

Lawmakers from both parties said Wednesday that they were appalled by the latest revelation: that the Army is investigating a sexual-assault prevention officer on suspicion of sex abuse and pimping. Several members pledged to overhaul the way the military punishes offenders and protects victims of sexual assault. FULL STORY>>>

And though she survived the assassination attempt, this did not move the mostly Republican and a few Democrats from supporting background checks.

Will it take an assassination of another United States President in order to change the minds of those Senators who voted against background checks?

After all, Abraham Lincoln, John F.Kennedy, James A. Garfield, William McKinley were assassinated by angry and politcally charged men. Two Presidents who were injured in attempted assassinations included former Presidents Ronald Reagan and Theodore Roosevelt.

A 2nd amendment supporter and United States Senator John McCain said:

“Just as I have long defended the Second Amendment to the Constitution, I have also long believed that it is perfectly reasonable to use available tools to conduct limited background checks, as this amendment prescribes, to help ensure that felons and the mentally-ill do not obtain guns they should not possess. In my view, such background checks are not overly burdensome or unconstitutional.”

McCain further addressed the concerns that the background checks would lead to a national registry. “If this amendment would establish such a registry, I would oppose it, but it does not,” he stated. Meanwhile, Arizona’s other senator, Jeff Flake, said Monday on his Facebook page that he opposes Background Checks Amendment because he feels it went too far.

Something to be aware of … according to WIKI, here is a list of the assassination attempts on the current President:

North Carolina Waffle House threats

Jerry Blanchard, an accountant from Charlotte, North Carolina, was indicted for threatening to kill Obama during a July 15, 2008 breakfast at a Charlotte Waffle House.[5][10] Two customers said Blanchard told them, “Obama and his wife are never going to make it to the White House. He needs to be taken out and I can do it in a heartbeat.”[5] The customers contacted the Secret Service, who questioned Blanchard. He denied making the threats, but allegedly told the Secret Service agents he believed Obama was the “Antichrist” prophesied in the Bible.[5][10] The Secret Service later got a second call from an employee of the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Charlotte,[11] where Blanchard was overheard in the lobby restroom saying into his cell phone, “I’ll get a sniper rifle and take care of it myself. Somebody’s got to do it … We both know Obama is the anti-Christ.”[5] Blanchard had claimed he would buy a sniper rifle and pistol from the Hyatt Gun Shop in Charlotte. The gun shop owner said Blanchard has visited the store but did not buy any weapons.[5] Blanchard was placed into custody on felony charges of making threats against a major candidate for president, and a psychiatric evaluation was ordered. It has been questioned how much evidence existed that he planned to actually go through with an assassination attempt.[5][10]

Miami bail-bondsman training threats

Raymond H. Geisel was charged with making threatening statements against Obama during a bail-bonds training class on July 31, 2008, in Miami, Florida.[10] During the course, Geisel referred to Obama with a racial epithet and said, “If he gets elected, I’ll assassinate him myself.”[2] Geisel also threatened to put a bullet in the head of then-President Bush, although Geisel later claimed he was joking. In his hotel room, authorities found ammunition, body armor, a combat-style hatchet, tear gas, a loaded 9 mm handgun and four loaded magazines. Geisel said he collected firearms, and was only using the gun for his bail-bonds course. Geisel remained in custody for a month.[2][10]

Paul Schlesselman and Daniel Cowart, two men with strong white supremacist beliefs, allegedly planned a murder spree of 88 African Americans in Tennessee, many of whom were to be young students at an unidentified, predominantly African-American school.
Kristy Lee Roshia, 35, called the Boston office of the Secret Service on November 10, 2009, and told them she planned to “blow away” First Lady Michelle Obama while the family visited Honolulu, Hawaii for a Christmas vacation. Information that Roshia provided to the Boston office was consistent with the itinerary of the Obama family at the Secret Service office in Hawaii, and authorities believe Roshia had observed Secret Service agents in the area of the Kailua Beach home where the Obamas had previously stayed.[7] Roshia had a history of calling the Boston office and making threats, and told the agency in 2004 that she intended to assassinate then-President <a title="George W. Following her threatening call, Roshia was arrested two miles from the Honolulu house the Obama family had booked for their vacation. She allegedly struck an officer in the face and arms while he tried to detain her. Roshia was charged with threatening a family member of the president and assaulting a federal agent while being arrested.[6] A federal judge has ordered Roshia to undergo a mental competency examination.[7]

On April 25, 2010, Joseph McVey, 23, was arrested in Asheville, North Carolina. Police say he impersonated a police officer at the city’s airport as the President left the airport on Air Force One. McVey is being held on a charge of going armed to the terror of the public as well as being charged for false impersonation of a police officer, according to the Buncombe County jail’s booking office. McVey’s bail was set at $100,000. Airport police Capt. Kevan Smith said the suspect was driving a car that was made to look like a law enforcement vehicle with working lights and sirens. He would provide no further details about the suspect, but emphasized that the president was never in any danger.[25]

As a result of a trial in North Carolina following the arrest, the original charge of Going Armed to the Terror of the Public was dismissed due to a lack of supporting facts. During the trial, police who arrested McVey revealed that nothing McVey had in his vehicle, a Pontiac Grand Prix (a vehicle no law enforcement agency regularly uses), was there without valid reason for his public service volunteering in Ohio. Further, McVey was found guilty of a violation of city ordinance (the same charge applied to those caught skateboarding on a city sidewalk).[citation needed]

2011

Khalid Kelly

In May 2011 Irish militant Khalid Kelly was arrested for threatening to assassinate Barack Obama. In an interview with the Sunday Mirror he said that al-Qaeda was likely to kill Obama on his upcoming trip to Ireland. He reportedly said he would like to do it himself, but was too well known. He stated, “Personally I would feel happy if Obama was killed. How could I not feel happy when a big enemy of Islam is gone?”[26]

Shots fired at White House

Around 9pm on Friday November 11, 2011, Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez fired a Romanian Cugir semiautomatic rifle from his car parked on Constitution Avenue. Nine rounds were fired, one of which was found lodged in a window of the first family’s living quarters. He was arrested five days later in a hotel in Indiana, Pennsylvania. Obama was not at the White House at the time of the shooting, but was at an APEC Meeting in Hawaii. Nevertheless, Federal prosecutors launched an investigation to determine if Hernandez acted out of hatred for Obama.[27] Subsequently, writings by Hernandez and testimony from those who knew him showed that he believed President Obama was the antichrist and the “devil”.[28][dead link]

2012

Plot by anarchist militia within US Army

In 2012, a case was brought against four U.S. Army soldiers in the U.S. state of Georgia claiming that they formed an anarchist militia within the U.S. military with plans to overthrow the U.S. federal government. Private First Class Michael Burnett pleaded guilty to manslaughter and gang charges in the December 2011 slayings of former soldier Michael Roark and his girlfriend Tiffany York who were killed because they knew of the militia group’s plans. The group purchased $87,000 worth of guns and bomb-making materials and plotted to take over Fort Stewart, bomb targets in Savannah and Washington state, and assassinate the president.[29]

After all, the GOP lawmakers who are attacking JayZ have no leg to stand on when they (GOPers) are the ones who helped to vote an end funding on the enforcement of the Travel Ban in Cuba. Why on God’s green earth would Cuban immigrants want to go back to Cuba on an extended vacation there on the tax payer’s dime? I thought Cuban immigrants wanted to flee the corrupt Cuban government — not go back on an extended vacation there. Why did Republican Flake vote to extend Cuban vacations to begin with if they are supposed to be fleeing Cuba? On the other hand, we see these same GOPers who are all about enforcement against the Mexicans, right?

Did you know that the Arizona Republican Senator Jeff Flake voted to end funding on the enforcement of the Travel Ban in Cuba, yet he is all about enforcement with regard to Mexican-American families here in the southwest? It’s true, Cuban immigrants receive preferential treatment over Mexicans and other immigrants from other parts of the country.

Here is what some GOPers supported a while ago and why they really can’t accuse JayZ and Beyonce for something they supported to end:

Senate-House Press Conference to Highlight Vote Suspending Cuba Travel Ban

Event: Press Conference highlighting the successful passage in both the House and Senate to
eliminate funding for enforcement of the Cuba travel ban.

Date: Wednesday, October 29, 2003 12 noon

Location: Senate Radio-TV gallery, U.S. Capitol

Attendees: Senate and House cosponsors of the Cuba travel amendment, including U.S. Senators Max Baucus (D-Mont.) Sens. Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.), Larry Craig (R-Ind.), Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) and Rep. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), among others.

Background:

On October 23, 2003, the U.S. Senate voted 59-36 in favor of eliminating funding that goes toward the enforcement of the Cuba travel ban. This vote mirrored similar House action taken in September, with a vote of 227-188, to eliminate travel ban funding. The amendment was included in the fiscal year 2004 Treasury-Transportation Appropriations Bill.

In recent months, momentum has grown in Congress and across the country for strengthened relations between the U.S. and Cuba. Earlier this year, bipartisan “Cuba Working Groups” were formed in both the House and Senate, with the goal of examining U.S. policies toward Cuba and determining the steps Congress can take to increase trade and strengthen the relationship between the two countries.

Sens. Baucus, Enzi, and Dorgan, among others have introduced legislation in the Senate to remove travel restrictions between the U.S. and Cuba. Companion legislation has been introduced in the House by Reps. Flake, Delahunt and others. In addition, a number of Members of Congress, including Baucus, have recently traveled to Cuba and met with leading dissidents, members of the Cuban government and the Cuban business
community.

At the press conference, the Members will be urging the Appropriations conference committee and the Administration to uphold the will of Congress and retain the Cuba travel provision in the final FY04 Treasury-Transportation legislation.

1st President to mention Latinos in speech to Congress is only one who lived among them

“I speak tonight for the dignity of man and the destiny of democracy,” the President Lyndon Johnson began.

It was March 15, 1965, a week after the nation saw on television Alabama state troopers violently attack peaceful black marchers protesting voting rights discrimination. The bloody images shocked the nation. They also horrified Johnson, the former Senate majority leader who had been lukewarm on civil rights at best.

The violence sparked Johnson into addressing Congress about the immediate need for a new Voting Rights bill. It what would later be called the best speech of a his presidency and one that brought Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. to tears.

It was also the first speech to Congress in U.S. history that mentioned Latinos and their struggle against poverty and discrimination—something Johnson saw firsthand as a young teacher in a Mexican American school. And it also brought a number Mexican-American civil rights leaders to tears.

But those historic words are often overlooked.

Johnson’s long conversion began when his father, a former state lawmaker, was hit hard financial times and his family was forced into near poverty in Johnson City, Texas. To help the family, Johnson worked in the cotton fields along side African Americans and Mexican Americans.

When it was time for Johnson to attend college, the University of Texas just wasn’t an option. It was too expensive. So, Johnson enrolled at Southwest Texas State Teachers College in San Marcos, Texas (today called Texas State). But Johnson still struggled with the tuition.

After his freshman year, a 19-year-old Johnson took a teaching job in Cotulla, a small South Texas town where the majority of students were poor and Mexican American.

But the young, idealistic Johnson was appalled by what he saw among his 5th, 6th, and 7th graders at the Welhausen School. Not only were his students dirt poor, he quickly saw how the town’s whites treated them like second-class citizens. Whites encourage the Latino students to stay home and become laborers like their parents. Other whites educators complained that the students did nothing but carry dirt, lice and disease.

“I am not going to stand here and tell you that they are the best people on the face of the earth,” one congressman said of Mexican Americans at the time Johnson was in Cotulla.

They treated Mexicans “just worse than you’d treat a dog,” Johnson would say later in life. Her remembered “the Mexican children going through a garbage pile, shaking the coffee ground from the grapefruit rinds and sucking the rinds for the juice that was left.”

But an energetic Johnson decided that he could still convert his students into believers of the American Dream. He organized athletic teams, pushed literary clubs and repeatedly told them all they could all reach high school, a rarity for Mexican Americans at the time.

When he got his first paycheck, he didn’t spend it on himself. He bought playground equipment.

Johnson told one student, Felipe Gonzalez, that one day he would be an attorney. Meanwhile, he tutored English to the school janitor.

“He used to tell us that this country was so free that anyone could become President who was willing to work hard enough,” his former student Dan Garcia recalled.

But deep down, Johnson knew his students had a difficult road ahead. In nearby towns, the Ku Klux Klan ruled by terror. In addition, segregation prevented Mexican Americans from good schools, college and everyday life.

Johnson later become a congressional aid, a congressman himself and later a U.S. senator. On his road to become the country’s most powerful Senate majority leader in its history, however, Johnson sought to appease Southern segregationists with speeches and his actions. He quietly helped a family of Mexican American soldier Felix Longoria, who was killed in action in WWII but refused burial service by a white-owner funeral home, get a spot in Arlington National Cemetery

……

As President Obama prepares next week to address Congress and to urge lawmakers to pass comprehensive immigration reform, it’s important to remember that whatever he says, it was Johnson who spoke from the soul, even when he knew it would hurt him politically later. But for Johnson it didn’t matter in 1965. That’s because 1928 and those students were with him, and always would be.

The Democrats cannot afford for the 2nd amendment issue to take political capital away from the broken immigration system and we appreciate seeing Mexican-American leaders such as Villaraigosa chime in on this. We don’t want to see the 2nd amendment issue take political capital away the way that Health Care did under Obama’s first term.

Federal politics and policies will fix what is broken locally. The Immigration issue is a federal issue under the Supremacy Clause.

We can’t wait another political season to pass comprehensive immigration reform,” he said on CBS’ “Face The Nation” Sunday. “We can’t do this piecemeal, and we can’t have a second-class citizenship. This has to be a full pathway to citizenship.”

The mayor went on to call immigration reform a moral and economic imperative. “If we bring these people — 11 million people — out of the dark and into the light, it’s about a $1.5 trillion impact to the U.S. economy,” he said. “The DREAMers alone — a $329 million impact.”

Villaraigosa will deliver this message to Washington Monday with a speech at the National Press Club luncheon on immigration reform. FULL STORY>>>

I like Ryan Trabuco. He is an amigo and an old friend from California who is now leaving the Republican Party in light of the fiscal cliff crisis.

I could not believe my ears when he told me he was considering leaving the GOP. He’s a strong conservative. I cannot say that I blame Ryan for leaving the GOP particularly when the California Republican Party hands over the microphone to extremists like Tim Donnelly who is running for California Governor. (You would think that the California GOP would have learned by now considering Prop 187 and the fast growing Mexican-American and/or Latin population there). The Republican National Committee should have started changing their platform yesterday after suffering a devastating loss on November 6, 2012. Now they are acting as if they have a leg to stand on after the devastating blow with regard to the fiscal crisis issue. The GOP keeps giving the soapbox over to the likes of Tea Party extremist Jim DeMint. [My God -- how in the heck do they expect the party to grow with tools like that?]

Here is why Ryan chose to be an independent / no party preference voter … and I think it is important to share his story with fellow Arizonans — particularly since California is a neighboring state.

Ryan Trabuco writes:

No Party Preference

Posted on January 3, 2013

“I am an American; free born and free bred, where I acknowledge no man as my superior, except for his own worth, or as my inferior, except for his own demerit.” — Theodore Roosevelt

My decision. My choice. Certainly, this wasn’t easy. Allow me to think this through.

I’ve always admired Theodore Roosevelt. He fought corruption, spoke out passionately about his beliefs in much-needed reforms, and was noted for his fairness in policy and politics.

Of course, you may also read that folks at the turn of the 20th century considered him belligerent and opinionated. Hell, I’ve been called worse. For every one of his critics, however, there were many more who considered him “the hero America needed” as author Michael L. Cooper penned in his 2009 biography on our nation’s 26th President.

What I admire most about Teddy’s legacy and leadership, was his ability to bring folks together — often transcending partisan politics — and in doing so, for the good of our country.

Many of Teddy Roosevelt’s decisions were not easy, such as leaving the Republican Party in 1912 — a party he was active in and helped lead as a New York Assemblyman, Police Commissioner, Governor, Vice-President, and President. The Republican Party had left him and tacked a hard right turn, and Roosevelt, through the passion of defiance, left the party to continue to champion those reforms, values, and ideas he held dear.

Today, I feel it’s the same path I must take as well. Today, I re-registered to vote as “No Party Preference” (a.k.a. “Independent”).

I assure you, no decision could have been harder for me, personally.

Freedom. Opportunity. Self-Reliance. State’s Rights. Government efficiency. There’s a sense of tradition and a value system — that I cherish and hold dear — you just don’t find in other political parties.

There’s a proud history of nearly 10 years here registering Republican voters. Volunteering. Fundraising. Knocking on doors, calling voters, doing anything I could possibly do to help Republican candidates win elections — pouring blood, sweat, and often tears into these efforts. Oh Lord, did I mention the tweeting?

For now, in this moment, I just felt it was the right choice to make.

As unfortunate (for a number of reasons) that I felt 2008 was a bad year politically, nothing could’ve prepared me for the slaughter of 2012. Of course, in the heat of election cycles, it’s easy to re-hash the talking points of a campaign, and paraphrase why you feel it’s better that voters should choose your side. There’s facts, graphs, logic, and ideology at play. What’s often overlooked though is governing, and the plan to govern.

There hadn’t been much thought about re-registering until recently, while watching the fiscal cliff debate play out over weeks on end. Speculation. Finger-pointing. The constant will-they-won’t-they approach to politics. Quite honestly, it was sick. For as bad as it was for Democrats, I couldn’t honestly sit back and defend the Republicans’ seemingly hands-off approach to governing.

I kept asking myself, “Where’s the leadership? Where’s the plan?”

Then, allowing the Democrats to figure it out on their own and then dictate the terms of whatever the compromise would be was embarrassing to say the very least. I can’t defend that.

I admit, I said for a long time that wild horses couldn’t drag me from my party — and they didn’t. The selfish behavior of those who would rather bring our country to its’ knees, rather than face the challenges ahead of us have drug the party away from me. The constant kowtowing to the Tea Party and like-minded ideologues have damaged the brand, the mission, and the spirit of the Republican Party.

Look at California. The Republican Party, here, is a mess. Enough said.

In San Diego, it’s not nearly as bad but there’s problems here as well. There’s nothing wrong with good-natured, well-intentioned, and much-needed government reforms, but there is a significant problem when you allow a single elected official — an emotional and personality equivalent to Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride — to dictate the focus of the party, and whether you are or aren’t welcome within the apparatus.

When Nathan Fletcher left the Republican Party last spring, I admit, I was more than disappointed and reflected those feelings to him over the phone. He said he was tired and over the drama. All the critics said it was political. After much soul-searching these last few weeks, I have to say that Nathan was right. I’m tired and over it, too.

All in all, I don’t feel there’s leadership. Or focus. I don’t feel there’s necessary attention being paid to strengthen the Republican Party. All talk, no action. I’ve said for years that the GOP needed to embrace it’s roots founded in the original 1856 Platform — a document that reads more like the blueprint for ideas in freedom and governance, rather than today’s GOP platform which specifically says what you can or can’t do in life.

Where’s the allure? What’s the difference between the Republicans and the Democrats, aside from being polar opposites on the political spectrum? Nothing. God forbid you find yourself in the political center. You have no where to go.

All that said, where do we go from here?

I’m sure folks will say I’ve always been a squish. Not committed. Not conservative enough. That’s fine. That just shows that those folks have very little respect for the consistent work I did all those years. All the more reason for my decision to step aside, and re-register.

I am now a simple, registered voter who states that I have NO PARTY PREFERENCE. That doesn’t change who I am or what I believe. Our spending needs to be under control, I’m not in favor of big government or higher taxes — we need some desperate spending cuts, for sure. However, if I ever served as an elected official, I would have sense enough to know not to bring a government to its knees because of hard-headedness (a heartfelt sentiment to both parties).

Thankfully, I have no designs on political office. I’m too honest for it.

Now, there are good Republicans, and there are good Democrats. I’m honored to know both. It’s the self-interested ones on both sides of the aisle who need to reappraise their purpose in politics.

Hopefully, there will be a time in the very near future when the Republican Party evaluates itself in the tradition of Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt. I pray it does. It would be an honor to re-register as a Republican under such circumstances. Until then, I will spend my time focusing on my commitments and service to my community, and encouraging camaraderie among others — no matter what their political persuasion may be.

Teddy Roosevelt once said, “Keep your eyes on the stars, and your feet on the ground.” I’ve always been inspired to reach for the stars, and although I’m no longer a Republican, I feel as grounded as I’ve ever been.

On a last note…

Americans are getting sick and tired of the do-nothing Congress because they cannot seem to pull their heads out as elected official to do what is in the best interest of the United States. We are fed up with their bickering and their inability to work together in a bipartisan fashion.

It is no wonder why we are seeing a sharp rise in independent voters (or no party preference) across our Nation. We are on the brink of an independent revolution, and am glad to see new leaders like Ryan emerge.

It is our job to remind Americans who killed the American Jobs Bill of 2011. Republicans are pulling out all stops to ensure the failure of the Obama Presidency. Indeed, they are doing their best to make it look like the “minority” President screwed up our nation without being truthful and admitting that President George W. Bush supported bailouts and the “too big to fail” direction. Keep in mind that the Republican Party has become the Dixiecrat Party of isolationism, protectionism and restrictionist beliefs these days and have filled their ranks with bigotry against Latinos, Muslims, Gay and Lesbians, African-Americans, and the list goes on.

Republicans do not want the average and ordinary American to remember they have done a thorough job of offloading good jobs to India, China and other parts of the globe while blaming homeland immigrants who are taking agricultural type of jobs that Americans don’t want anyway. Never mind how immigrants contribute their talents to our Nation and wanting to keep their money here in our United States as their money tends to support American small businesses.

On this Labor Day 2012, let us remember how the Republicans killed the jobs bill in 2011.

From the New York Times:

Truth be told, there are more than 20 million people who will continue suffering because of the Republican failure to pass the American Jobs Act.

Creating well-paying jobs is the only way to save the American economy. By creating 200,000 to 300,000 new jobs every month, we would increase the tax base and not even have to think about raising taxes on anyone in America.

People with jobs would be able to keep their homes, send their children to college, and once again buy goods and services. That would create more profits for American companies, adding revenues to the tax base and lowering the deficit.

What Senate Republicans have done is shameful, disgraceful and a major blow to the economic health of our nation.

From the National Tequila Party Movement (Latina Counter Movement to Tea Party Bigotry)

For Immediate Release

24 August 2012

EVENT SCHEDULE: Latina-led FREEDOM FIGHTER trip for Immigrants to protest GOP Convention with a stop in Birmingham, Alabama

The National Tequila Party Movement is set to leave Phoenix, Arizona, this Sunday, August 26, 2012, via our Latina-led Freedom Riders for Immigrants. We will be protesting the corrupt Sheriff Joe Arpaio who is responsible for allowing the killing of my people in his jail. Latino Veteran Marty Atencio died in Arpaio’s jail and several other mysterious Mexican deaths continue to take place in Arizona.

In addition to protesting Arpaio at the Republican National Convention, we are protesting the DIXIECRAT voter suppression laws and restrictionist anti-immigration policies that have been adopted by the GOP platform. That language and other provisions were widely approved by the party after being introduced by the co-author of the Arizona law, Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach (R).

Everyone on our bus will be eligible voters and U.S. citizens of our Nation. The message we want to communicate is that millions of American-born citizens are eligible to vote. American-born Latinos and eligible voters will be a voice for the voiceless undocumented immigrants. And while we continue to believe in our Nation being the Beacon to the world, we refuse to ignore how we have been heavily involved in international affairs with our wars in other countries when we should be focusing on homeland issues regarding a humane and legal immigration plan.

Here is our schedule of events as we take our Latina-led FREEDOM RIDE for Immigrants to Birmingham, Alabama, and finally to the GOP Convention to protest their inhumane policies that are reminiscent of a pre Civil Rights era.

11:00 am – Sunday, August 26, 2012: Depart Phoenix, Arizona

3:00 am – Monday August 27, 2012: Lead Co-President Shirl Mora James joins Latina FREEDOM RIDE in Oklahoma City, OK.

7:00 am – Monday, August 27, 2012: Family members of Joaquin Luna (young Texas DREAMer who committed suicide because he felt he had no hope) join the Latina FREEDOM RIDE in Dallas, TX.

2:30 pm – Monday, August 27, 2012: James Powers, Board President of the ACLU in Mississippi, joins us in Jackson, MI.

6:30 pm – Monday, August 27, 2012: We rally up in Birmingham, Alabama, for press conference at West (Kelly Ingram) Park across the street from the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church.

9:00 am – Tuesday, August 28, 2012: Our protest of the Republican National Convention begins to protest the DIXIECRAT policies the Republican Party has embraced that have created mysterious deaths of Mexican-Americans in the jail system.

Many people think the immigration issue is a Mexican or Latin thing.

It isn’t.

The Obama Deferred Action plan has helped the Irish undocumented tremendously by the hundreds of thousands. And we are very glad for the global community. Indeed immigration is a global issue.

We hope the Irish will remember that it was Mitt Romney who embraced immigration policies that the ousted Senator Russell Pearce embraced with his draconian anti-immigrant laws. In fact, Romney’s immigration plan mirrored Russell Pearces.

We hope to see the Irish community help deliver Massachusetts to Obama in a swoop and other northeastern states with high Irish population.

We know immigration was not an easy thing for Obama to handle within his first term as President of the United States. In fact, both Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush did not address immigration until their second term as President. Today we see hypocritical Tea Party Republicans who loathe Reagan’s amnesty because they would rather hold on to their restrictionist and protectionist views. Make no mistake, there is still plenty of work as we work towards a humane legal immigration system that everybody agrees is broken. Indeed we do need to fix the broken immigration system and create a legal avenue, however, bigotry is stopping those efforts.

The entire global community is thankful for the 1.7 million acts of compassion that were given yesterday.

From the Irish Central:

Irish among hundreds of thousands of undocumented applying to stay legally

Irish children who came with illegal parents will qualify under new presidential waiver

“…One Northern Irish familybased in New Jersey welcomed President Obama’s announcement which will see his administration stop deportations and grant work permits for qualified undocumented young adults currently living in the U.S.

“I was in shock,” says Malachy McAllister, whose two youngest children, Sean Ryan, 24, and Nicole, 26, stand to benefit from the new policy as they came to the U.S. when they were under 16….”
