Mitt Romney wants to do to the Irish what he wants to do to the Latino undocumented immigrants – Send them all back via self deportation

Monday, July 2nd, 2012

Remember those E-3 visas for the Irish in Massachusetts?  We know that Sen. Scott Brown took out the provisions for the Irish undocumented immigrants, while Senator Charles E. Schumer chose to keep the provisions in the E-3 visa bill.

Guess who primarily blocked the issue for the Irish the same way they try to block it for Mexican-Americans, the Asians and the rest of the undocumented living here in the United States?

Tea Party Republicans are primarily held responsible for blocking the E-3 visa bill for the Irish and this affects many of them who are living in the shadows of society in New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and etc.

The immigration issue is not just a “Latin” thing … it affects the Irish, the Canadians, the Europeans and the rest of the undocumented immigrants who are here from other parts of the world.  We need to handle the immigration issue in a reasonable manner, and Mitt Romney is for sending all of them back via Kris Kobach’s self deportation idea that doesn’t stand a chance.   In fact, Romney was endorsed by Kris Kobach who is the legal architect behind most of these anti-immigrant ideas.  Bottom line:  Romney is not for reasonable legal immigration reform.

We all want the immigration issue to be fixed via a LEGAL IMMIGRATION REFORM method, and it can be accomplished if the communities affected by the immigration issue will vote in immigrant-friendly politicians.  Mitt Romney is not immigrant-friendly — hell, he doesn’t have an ounce of compassion for children of the undocumented when he promised to veto the DREAM Act.

It is imperative the people of Massachusetts remembers Mitt Romney’s stance against the undocumented immigrants — and that includes the Irish in the northeastern part of the United States.  Mitt Romney is in bed with Kris Kobach, Pete Wilson, Joe Arpaio and several isolationist and restrictionist Republicans.  He cannot be trusted on the immigration issue.

Viva los San Patricios!

The Tequila Party is fighting for legal immigration that affects the entire global community.

From the National Tequila Party Movement Irish undocumented executive director below:

As a proud Irish American, living in the United States, it saddens me greatly to hear the violent and heartless rhetoric espoused by those running for the opportunity to be the leader of one of the greatest nation in the world. A nation, mind you, built on immigrants.  This country was built on the blood, sweat, tears and bones of those that came here looking for a better life, for themselves and their families.

We are a nation of immigrants, and our history has not always such a proud one.  From the time when the first Europeans landed on these shores, it has been a battle for dominance and resources against the First-Americans and at the newly arrived immigrants. The immigrants that arrived here first, then tried to deny the same opportunity to the immigrants that came later, or to immigrants that they looked down upon already, whether for reasons of culture or religion.

Whatever nativist group sprung up, the Know-Nothings, the Klu Klux Klan, and now their ideological descendants; FAIR, Numbers USA, and ALIPAC, are trying the same old methods to destroy, deter and demean the new group of immigrants. However, our neighbors to the South have been here for quite some time and their history and culture permeates the United State in place names, surnames, food and music.   Remarkably, most of Hispanics have been for hundreds of years and are an integral part of the United States.

When we draw parallels between the Immigrant Irish of the Potato Famine years and the new immigrants from south of the border, we see an amazing similarity in how they are perceived and in the war against them conducted by the nativists.  Both groups are portrayed as sub-human by these hate groups.  Both groups have had religion used against them, both face strict immigration  restrictions on the numbers allowed in, both were considered lower in intelligence and ability than the dominant population, both demonized for the ills and troubles affecting the current population.  Denied jobs, rights, education, accused of being unwilling or unable to learn the dominant language or culture, they are relegated to menial labor and poor working conditions.

But, and there is a big BUT here, they survived and most importantly, they succeeded.  In law, in politics, in religion, in education and in government, they have given us some of our greatest leaders, humanitarians and scientists.  And during all this, the nativist hatred and chatter has sometimes grown loud and strong and sometimes been silenced and relegated to where it belongs – in the outhouse.

The lessons in history surrounding this issue is this: the nativists have always, ultimately, lost. It was true for the past and will be true again for the future.  If the only rhetoric one has, in promoting themselves as a potential leader, is a desire to trample rights so dearly treasured, deny access to those less fortunate, and demonizes an entire race or religion, then that person is not and never will be fit to be a leader.

The future is now. The things we do now, will decide how we are viewed by history. If we give in to those that would advocate violence, deny basic human necessities and think this is what the American people want, we have lost.  I have more faith in America than this. I believe that the truth and what is right will ultimately prevail, it might be a rough road, but both the Irish and the Latino populations have both been down this road before, and what does not destroy us, only made us stronger.  The nativists would do well to remember that fact.

Arizona Immigration Activist Revisits SB 1070 in light of Supreme Court hearing

Tuesday, April 24th, 2012

As an immigration activist living in Arizona, I wrote the following opinon with regard to the upcoming SB1070 hearing that will be heard in the Supreme Court.

The GOP Cannot Hide the Arizona SB 1070 ‘Large Elephant’ in the Room

By DeeDee Garcia Blase

The Supreme Court hearing regarding Arizona’s SB1070 will be a vote mover in the southwestern part of the United States.  The scab of an old wound will be ripped off and exposed once again within our community as the issue comes to the forefront again.  Instead of hanging out at the courthouse protesting against SB1070, we will protest via our vote  during the upcoming 2012 Presidential elections.  We must identify in a realistic manner what the best option will be for us that is directly hurting and affecting our community.

According to ABC News:

Kris Kobach, a key drafter of Arizona’s controversial immigration law, will be in Washington on Wednesday to hear the Supreme Court discuss the legality of the tough state measure that empowers local police to enforce federal immigration laws.  Kobach, who worked closely with former Arizona State Sen. Russell Pearce in crafting the 2010 law, said he stays in close touch with the Mitt Romney campaign.

These days, we are witnessing multiple-choice Mitt Romney make moves as he tries to disassociate himself from Kris Kobach.  Many within our Latino community believe it is too little and too late – specifically in the southwestern part of our Country where most of the  Mexican-American population resides.

Unfortunately for Romney, he has made too many damning statements when he chose to align himself with Pete Wilson and Kris Kobach.   Other known extremists such as the Arizona Governor Jan Brewer, and the ousted former Arizona State Senator  Russell Pearce have also gotten behind him.  This does not come as a surprise to us since we witnessed nativist and former Congressman Tom Tancredo endorse Romney in 2007.  In fact, Romney designated controversial Sheriff Joe Arpaio as his Arizona Chair when he ran against Senator John McCain during the 2008 GOP primaries.

We now live in an Information Age where Americans receive their news via YouTube, the internet and social networking – and as a result of the digital footprint now made available to us, the Karl Rovian way is becoming more of an ineffective antiquated strategy.  We are now able to file away and organize flip-flops when it comes to stances politicians have taken regarding government policy.

Elis Foley with the Huffington Post writes:

Romney has said repeatedly that he supports the Arizona’s right to pass such a law and would drop a federal lawsuit against it were he elected — perhaps not an explicit endorsement, but one that implies he supports the law, at least for Arizona.

Romney also has advocated for what he called “self-deportation,” or making things difficult for undocumented immigrants until they decide to leave, one of the central tenets of the Arizona law. One of his informal advisers on immigration, SB 1070 architect and Kansas secretary of state Kris Kobach, supports the law as a model for nationwide enforcement.

“[Self-deportation] is in SB 1070,” Pearce said.

As the GOP scrambles desperately for an effort to woo the Latino vote in light of an election cycle, many of us will remember that no leading Republican

Senate Bill 1070 Signed Into Law By Arizona Governor Jan Brewer who recently endorsed Mitt Romney for 2012 President

organizations stood strong against SB1070 in 2010 when the immigration issue reached a fevered pitch except for one –  SOMOS REPUBLICANS.  SOMOS was widely known for being the only Republican organization in the nation that stood against the anti-immigrant SB 1070 law when Republican Gov. Jan Brewer signed the bill into action. Latinos were ultimately left to fend for themselves in Arizona.  Several conservative leaning groups (including Hispanic Republican groups) supported the Arizona governor.  We were dismayed when we heard Senator Marco Rubio’s support of the Arizona harsh anti-immigrant law.

The Republican Party lacked foresight and leadership with regard to an issue near and dear to Latinos,  and now they must face the music and become the Party of personal responsibility.  The RNC turned a blind eye to several Republican lawmakers who supported anti-immigrant policies. They also turned a blind eye to the many hostile remarks regarding the treatment of immigrants. RNC leadership was nowhere to be found, until now because now they want our vote.

While it is true that President Obama did not give us immigration reform during his first year as President, Latinos must go back in American history and figure out why.  We need to remind ourselves that there have been no recent American Presidents who tackled comprehensive immigration reform within their first term.  Former President Ronald Reagan did not give immigrant amnesty until he was re-elected as President.  Former President George W. Bush did not address comprehensive immigration reform until his second term because he did not believe there was an immigration problem to begin with.  The only President that supported immigrant-friendly policies during his first term as President was Benjamin Harrison and he did not get re-elected for a second term.

Should it be a complete surprise to us that President Obama has not confronted immigration during his first term?  The immigration issue has become one of the most toxic issues in our time since the Republican Colorado Congressman Tom Tancredo launched his restrictionist Immigration Reform Caucus.   Meanwhile, myth-maker  (R-TX) Congressman Lamar Smith has been busy writing opinion after opinion falsely accusing President Obama as a supporter of amnesty even though he knows Obama has deported more immigrants than Bush.  The anti-immigrant sentiment continued to mount when Florida’s Cuban-American Sen. Marco Rubio stated Ronald Reagan erred in supporting  the 1986 amnesty for immigrants (despite the Cuban amnesty afforded to his own family).

So what options are Latinos left with as we revisit the painful wounds of SB 1070 during  2012?

Here are some options:

1)     We can take our chances with a President who is going to enter his second term as President because he no longer has to worry about getting re-elected

2)     Or, we could gamble away our vote with a candidate who has solid ties to Kris Kobach, (the architect behind many of these anti-immigrant and DREAM Act laws), Pete Wilson, Jan Brewer, and Russell Pearce who are all promoters of the infamous self-deportation law via SB 1070.

Unless there is a brokered GOP Convention, there really is no third option for Latinos.

Let us be honest –  I do not believe a President will ever address immigration reform within his first term.  Just the same, I do not believe Latinos are willing to gamble with a candidate that has made deals with devils via Pete Wilson, Kris Kobach, Joe Arpaio’s  posse, and the vast majority of the Archie Bunker wing.

Texas Senator John Cornyn’s “mañana” comment inappropriate regarding Arizona’s SB1070 law

Tuesday, April 24th, 2012

Texas Senator John Cornyn’s “mañana” comment is highly offensive and inappropriate to the Latino community, because “ayer” the Texas Senator had the opportunity to vote in support of the DREAM Act bill in December 2010 where he ultimately VOTED NO against our youth.

There was no reason the Texas Senator could not take a lead on the DREAM Act because he represents a state where many of his constituents are of Mexican-American descent.

According to Talking Points Memo:

Sen. John Cornyn (TX), the ranking member of the Judiciary subcommittee, called the hearing a futile exercise and, following the lead of other Republicans, he took a swipe at President Obama for failing to pass immigration reform.

“Unfortunately, the Democrat majority seems to have embraced President Obama’s ‘mañana’ approach to immigration reform,” Cornyn said in a statement.

A message to the Texas Senator:

We are all for legal immigration, Senator Cornyn, and not every Latino ethnic group is able to receive Cuban Amnesty because no Republican leadership in any of the high Hispanic populated states are taking leadership for legal immigration reform.  Mexicans that make up a significant part of your state are still waiting for you to take a lead on the Mexican Adjustment Act you should have taken “ayer.”

P.S.  You are no longer an amigo to those who had hoped you would support the DREAM Act vote of 2010.

Sahil Kapur with TPM writes:

Arizona’s controversial immigration measure has inspired numerous boycotts — and on Tuesday, it provoked another, when Senate Republicans refused to show up at a hearing on the measure. The hearing took place one day before the Supreme Court begins to weigh its constitutionality, leaving Democrats to spar with the author of the measure and paint the GOP as “absent” — literally — on immigration reform.

The hearing comes ahead of an election in which the two parties are battling for Hispanic voters, who strongly oppose the S.B. 1070 law and who lean Democratic by a huge margin. The Democrats’ hearing reflects an effort to highlight this divide, in part because they used the occasion to make an impassioned case for the DREAM Act.

There were only 6 Democratic Senators who did not vote in support of the DREAM Act, however, there were 39 Republican Senators  below who voted against the DREAM Act in 2010.  They showed no mercy and compassion before they took their Christmas vacations in 2010.   Will Senator John McCain and Senator Jon Kyl retire with the legend of being anti-children and anti-immigrant? Hell, Senator Orrin Hatch clearly doesn’t stand by the principles of the Utah Compact.  Isn’t this nation great because of the immigrants that landed on Plymouth?

Below is a list of United States Republican Senators who will receive an F on an immigration score card currently being prepared in light of the 2012 Presidential Elections.  An immigration score card will be circulated to all High Hispanic populated states and our media contacts.  We encourage the below United States Senators to pass the DREAM Act and fix the broken immigration system before they take their Holiday or Christmas vacation in 2011.  The judgment that is passed on our children will be reciprocal.

Below are all of the Republicans Senators who voted Nay during the DREAM Act vote in December 2010:

Alexander (R-TN),
Barrasso (R-WY),
Bond (R-MO),
Brown (R-MA),
Brownback (R-KS),
Burr (R-NC),
Chambliss (R-GA),
Coburn (R-OK),
Cochran (R-MS),
Collins (R-ME),
Corker (R-TN),
Cornyn (R-TX),
Crapo (R-ID),
DeMint (R-SC),
Ensign (R-NV),
Enzi (R-WY),
Graham (R-SC),
Grassley (R-IA),
Hutchison (R-TX),
Inhofe (R-OK),
Isakson (R-GA),
Johanns (R-NE),
Kirk (R-IL),
Kyl (R-AZ),
LeMieux (R-FL),
McCain (R-AZ),
McConnell (R-KY),
Risch (R-ID),
Roberts (R-KS),
Sessions (R-AL),
Shelby (R-AL),
Snowe (R-ME),
Thune (R-SD),
Vitter (R-LA),
Voinovich (R-OH),
Wicker (R-MS),

Note the 5 Democrats who voted nay. 60 votes were needed on the aye side for the measure to invoke cloture, which would have concluded debate on the matter so it could proceed to a vote for or against passage.

Not Voting – 4
Bunning (R-KY)
Gregg (R-NH)
Hatch (R-UT)
Manchin (D-WV)   *Note:  Democratic Senator Manchin chose to attend a Christmas Party instead of voting.

*Note: Senator Marco Rubio repeatedly voiced his opposition against the DREAM Act and the blood of Joaquin is on his hands, too.  He is the worst of them all because he knows that Cubans receive privileged amnesty and does nothing to fix the broken immigration system knowing full well that other Hispanic ethnic groups do not receive special benefits that have been afforded to his family who migrated from Cuba.
