(VIDEO) Senator Harry Reid: House of Representatives Doing Nothing on Fixing Broken Immigration System Affecting Our National SecurityThursday, November 14th, 2013
We love Senator Harry Reid when it comes to immigration reform, and he is one of my favorite Mormons, too! I only wish we could see the Utah Republican House of Representatives openly put pressure on Speaker John Boehner while invoking the Utah Compact!
See Sen. Reid in below video discussing how the House is doing nothing on legal immigration reform that could only enhance our national security! Meanwhile, the Republican-led House of Representatives and Majority Leader John Boehner (who gets paid almost a quarter of a million dollars per year) wants to reduce his Congressional working days before the year ends!
Somos Independents is a national group of key swing registered independent voters led by Mexican American women. Majority House Leader John Boehner is on of the highest paid government official getting paid almost a quarter of a million dollars per year with our tax dollars. We do not believe it is acceptable for him to decrease Congressional working days in 2013 in light of Americans having to endure the government shutdown debacle, partisanship, infighting with regard to the Affordable Care Act, Syria, Iran, budget talks and etc. We have watched the GOP-led House of Representative polls sink, and we believe they do not deserve to go on extended vacation breaks considering Americans pay over $75 million budget per year in order to fund 435 House of Representatives.
The Republican Party used to pride itself on strong national security, however, we see them dragging their feet because they have an opportunity to help eliminate those who profit and benefit from a broken immigration system in the name of National and Economic security.
According to Rep. Nancy Pelosi, we have the legal comprehensive immigration reform (CIR) votes with 190 cosponsors on H.R.15 and 28 Republicans vowing support.
The GOP can do things the easy way or the hard way. Either they pass immigration reform in 2013, or pay the political consequences in 2014. If they wait until 2014, we are afraid their hostility on immigration will remain fresh in our Mexican American / Latino minds for the remainder of the 2014 election year. We want to remind RNC Chair Reince Prieus and the Republican Party of when they underestimated us before in 2012 and suffered a huge blow with regard to the “Hispanic” and women vote. We plan on micro targeting areas with high Hispanic populated areas or areas with population changes. Our demographics and the arc of justice bend in our favor, and with the internet age we live , the GOP can no longer insult our intelligence with false perceptions. We know and understand what is going on. With approximately 500,000 new coming of age Latin voters per year, it would be wise for the GOP to take care of business before they go on their Christmas or Holiday break.
We are asking Speaker John Boehner to reconsider his recent immigration move because fixing our broken immigration system is a National Security issue. If national security is not a top priority for Republicans in the House of Representatives, we would like to invite them to attend the Joaquin Luna Jr., Memorial Walk in Texas so they can witness firsthand how the broken immigration system directly affects Mexican American and Latinos across the Nation. Joaquin Luna Jr. was a DREAM Act student who shot himself the day after Thanksgiving Day approximately 2 years ago because he felt he had no hope, and we want Republicans to remember Joaquin Luna this Thanksgiving Day. It has been 2 years since that fateful day and there is no reason why we cannot fix our immigration system in our Homeland considering we seem to be the first to want to issues in other parts of the world.
Here is a letter from Nina Hinojosa, surviving member of his family directed to the Republicans in the House of Representatives:
Nov. 7, 2013
Letter to Republican Representatives
It’s going on two years this month, that my brother Joaquín Luna, Jr. took his own life due to him having no hope of becoming a Civil Engineer like he always hoped he could be in this country. So, he chose to be with our Lord Jesús Cristo where in heaven you don’t need to have any sorts of documents to be accepted, just your faith.
It’s so hard to accept that the people we voted for to represent our country is so narrow minded, so cold-hearted that you all can’t put yourselves in our shoes and see the world as it really is and accept change. Because, these people who undocumented human beings (like you) are suffering. Take your blind folds off and see the potential all this kids have and see how much they have to bring to the table.
Stop the suffering, and stop the discrimination and give us a chance to prove ourselves. Give us the benefit of the doubt, so we can prove how much (together) we can make this a better place.
You have it in your power to make a humanbeing like my brother Joaquín Luna, Jr. have hope in their Dreams to become a reality and prove to everyone that we are more than undocumented.
Don’t spread more pain and don’t have another child lose hope. Don’t have another mother bury her son, a sister loose her baby brother (which I helped raise) and to this day I can’t stop shedding tears for him. And may you reading this feel my pain and open your hearts and have faith.
May you rest in peace little brother, Joaquín Luna, Jr.
