Kansas Roots with Texas Boots Poem
Saturday, January 12th, 2013Dedicated to my son who wants me to buy him some cowboy boots….
Kansas Roots with Texas Boots
.
He has Kansas roots but mama’s gonna buy him some Texas boots
She knows he ain’t a baby no more
With each passing day his mama turns antiwar
Gone are the days of simple cuts and scrapes
The old Superman capes are folded ‘n tucked away
He now wants to explore
To the tune of a caballero
He has Kansas roots
But mama’s gonna buy him some Texas boots
Guiding him to be a strong young gentleman
Not the ways of a cattleman
That boy’s gonna be a man someday soon
Already’s got her singing the blues
Doubts of her tough love plaguing her mind
Wondering if she’ll help him turn out all right
There’s a reason she told him to keep his chin up
There’s no room for crying … only look up
She instructs to never let the cruel world know
He’s ever been knocked down or low
And when they back him into a corner one day
Give ‘em hell, arms a blazing and have them run away
He has Kansas roots
But mama’s gonna buy him some Texas boots
Guiding him to be a strong young gentleman,
Not the ways of a cattleman
That boy’s gonna be a man someday soon
Already’s got her singing the blues
She told him keep your guard up
Let close the ones that he loves
But her boy already sounding alarms
When she hears him strumming that guitar
Hoping he’ll find out there are no absolutes
With a pair of them old cowboy boots
Maybe one day he’ll listen to Willie and Waylon
Like her daddy used to do …
She don’t want her boy singing Merle’s working man blues
