Rick Santorum – a tough target

Monday, February 20th, 2012

As a Santorum supporter, I’m delighted to see the attacks being mounted against him lately. And they’re coming principally from three quarters – Liberals, who are scared of his conservatism, establishment Republicans, who are also scared of, or maybe I should temper that to “worried about” his conservatism, and Romney supporters, who are trying to paint him as Liberal.

The thing is, they’re not getting anywhere. They’re offended at one of Santorum’...

The big “Obama is Muslim” gaffe

Monday, February 20th, 2012

Mark Levin opened his radio show tonight with the big flap over the mix-up over Obama’s religion.

“There’s a big flap out there, ladies and gentlemen. Somebody accidentally accused Barack Milhous Obama of being Muslim. But it was an accident, I promise you. (Mark Levin often uses “Milhous” as Obama’s middle name, since it has been said that we’re not allowed to use his real middle name.)

Here’s the clip. It’s 40 seconds. You’ll be appal...

Is Mitt Romney honest? An LDS perspective.

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

I just discovered that my blog posting from last Friday, titled, The Mormon Case Against Romney, was picked up and published in its entirety by The Free Republic blog. And was commented on in a lively discussion, with comments such as:
“This guy nailed Bishop Romney to a tee.”
“This article should be bookmarked and presented as rebuttal to every clown who argues that a man’s faith is not important in determining his qualifications for public office.”
“Kudos to...

The Mormon case against Romney

Friday, February 10th, 2012

I’m LDS, and I fully realize that the Mormon vote is going for Romney. He’s going to take Utah. And Arizona. Pardon me for not joining.

I know the thinking. When that LDS tag is attached, members of the Church all understand that the person is honest, loving, trustworthy, etc., and all the others are questionable. I don’t buy that. I’ve seen too much of life to just accept that premise without any question. The rough approximations of the assumption of the character of LD...

Matt Salmon at the Mountain View Tea Party

Friday, February 10th, 2012

Matt Salmon was the guest speaker at our Mountain View Tea Party tonight. I was very impressed.

My first clue that this is a man I can trust was his sticking to his word when he first served in Congress. He committed to limit himself to three terms, and he kept his word. I watched Jeff Flake try to weasel out of his similar promise – it was very unbecoming. I think most of those Republicans who made that pledge later broke their word. If you are untrustworthy in one thing, you will be untr...

Questions raised about Obama’s connection to Mexican drug cartels

Thursday, February 9th, 2012

Did it strike anyone else as unusual how quickly Obama returned campaign donations from these “Chicago men whose brother is a fugitive casino owner with suspected ties to political corruption in Mexico.” (Click the link to read the Chicago Tribune article.) I use the exact same words to emphasize the tenuous connection the media is making in hinting that this may be “dirty money.”

I seem to remember that in other instances of questionable contributions, Obama has thumbed ...

Rick Santorum’s likability

Wednesday, February 8th, 2012

If you’ve read much of this blog, you know that, among the present field of Republican presidential candidates, Rick Santorum is my man. I predicted some time ago that if the race could ever be framed as a two-person race between Santorum and Mitt Romney, that Santorum would run away with it. Now that we are approaching that framing, we may get the chance to see if I was right.

One mistake the Romney defenders are making is thinking that he is the most electable in this field. Not so. At b...

Make my day, Pres. Obama. Stick to your guns on this contraception mandate.

Wednesday, February 8th, 2012

One thing that annoys me to no end about national politics is the deception that goes on – the people clamping down on liberties passing themselves off as defending them, and the gullible people who believe them. That’s why I like this fight over the new HHS rule that religious institutions need to support contraception, the abortion pill, and sterilization procedures that violate their conscience. It clarifies the issue, and is helping wake people up to the police state that is bein...

Mitt Romney’s pathetic statement on unemployment – you call THIS electable?

Sunday, February 5th, 2012

So we got the January jobs numbers – an unemployment rate of 8.3%, and Obama and his defenders in the media are dancing in the streets. And Mitt Romney responds:

“We welcome the fact that jobs were created and unemployment declined. Unfortunately, these numbers cannot hide the fact that President Obama’s policies have prevented a true economic recovery. We can do better.”

Oh, give me a break. That’s the best you can do, Mitt? “Obama is doing okay, but I can do bet...

“The Iron Lady” – a clever way to demean a truly great woman.

Wednesday, February 1st, 2012

Last weekend my wife and I went to see The Iron Lady. I had read an interview with the producer, Damien Jones, where he answered a question about the objectivity of the movie saying that it was praised by both liberals and conservatives. While I didn’t believe that liberals would be capable of an objective appraisal of Lady Thatcher, I had hopes that he was right.

Watching the movie, my instincts had been correct.

I really don’t know the details of the events that were depicted, so I...

Newt Gingrich should withdraw and support Rick Santorum

Wednesday, February 1st, 2012

Yesterday on Mark Levin’s radio show, he mentioned some prominent pundit who suggested that Newt Gingrich should drop out and throw his support to Rick Santorum. Good idea!

Newt has been saying he could beat Mitt Romney if only Rick Santorum would do the right thing and get out of the race. First of all, how awfully crass of you, Newt, to suggest that. Ironically, this only highlights the reason that Newt, out of the three leading candidates, is my last choice. Self-absorbed politicians do...

Sarah Palin is wrong on this one – Rick Santorum is the most electable conservative

Sunday, January 29th, 2012

I very much admire Sarah Palin. I’ve read her autobiography, and view her as a true, freedom-loving patriot. But she and other conservatives are making a gross tactical error in backing Newt Gingrich. It’s splintering the Republican party terribly and it’s missing the boat by not supporting the most qualified, most solid conservative in the race, and also the most electable.

I watched a snippet of Governor Palin being interviewed by Jeanine Pirro on Fox News. Again, she was not...

Conservatives – get Rick Santorum or you’re going to lose an important contstituency

Saturday, January 21st, 2012

I’m so frustrated with our conservative opinion leaders, I could spit.

I love Rush Limbaugh - I catch some of his show every day. I highly respect Mark Levin – I download his podcast and try to catch every point he makes on his radio show each day. And I consider Sarah Palin an inspiring leader. But they’re all just sweeping the character problems with Newt under the rug.

Are you, the reader, also one of these “enlightened” people of the 21st century who has come ...

I’m frustrated with the direction of the Republican nomination process

Thursday, January 19th, 2012

And what I’m frustrated with is the behavior of certain “opinion leaders” in the conservative movement.

Yes, the country has deteriorated morally considerably in the last thirty years, since we elected Reagan. But we need more conservatives who are willing to resist the tide on all levels – not just the descent into statism, but the descent into moral relativism and “anything goes.”

We have a serial adulterer running for the Republican nomination, Newt Gingric...

Hospital aborts wrong twin in horrible mistake

Sunday, January 15th, 2012

I just finished reading an article on an online news source, The Stir, “Hospital Aborts Wrong Twin in Horrible Mistake.”

It was a woman in Australia who was carrying twins. One was diagnosed with a life-threatening heart defect. At 32 weeks (7 1/2 months) she decided to have the baby with the heart defect aborted. Problem is, the doctors ended up aborting the wrong child, terminating the healthy one.

Then, to compound the situation, they performed an emergency cesarean, delivered the...

Russell Pearce to be on the ballot in 2012

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

I was at the Mountain View Tea Party meeting tonight. Tom Jenney, Arizona Director of Americans for Prosperity was the speaker, with a very enlightening presentation. But the most interesting part of the meeting came when he finished.

Russell Pearce was in the audience, and was invited to stand and say a few words. He thanked those in attendance for their support during this past year and then announced, “I will be on the ballot in 2012.” He didn’t elaborate further on that. I ...

Character does matter in a Republican presidential candidate

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

My problem with Newt as a presidential candidate, from the beginning, has been the character issue. Twelve years ago, Democrats were trying to sell us on the idea that character doesn’t matter in a president – only his policies and what he does. I wasn’t buying it, and I thought Republicans in general weren’t buying it. But then we have Newt coming along with all this baggage of serial marital infidelity, ethics questions in the handling of money, and temperament issues, ...

Don’t let the Left frame the debate on same sex marriage

Sunday, January 8th, 2012

Kudos to Newt Gingrich for helping reframe the debate on same sex marriage in last night’s Republican debate. The question is the definition of marriage, not one of civil rights.

It was a question from a Yahoo News reader: “Given that you oppose gay marriage, what do you want gay people to do who want to form loving, committed, long-term relationships? What is your solution?”

After explaining his views on rights that same-sex couples should have, he then expounded on the question. He s...

Some advice for Republicans in the House

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

I created a post last Friday in which I said, “Get ready for Republicans to cave on Keystone pipeline.” And it certainly looks like I analyzed it correctly. And now, after correctly predicting the linguini-spined response of Republicans, I have some strong advice on the next step the Republicans should take.

First, on the current situation: The deal that Mitch McConnell crafted with Harry Reid gives 60 days to the President to say yay or nay on the pipeline deal. I’m at a loss ...
