The governor’s plan to add more than 300,000 Arizonans to the Medicaid rolls will do nothing more than facilitate and expand Obamacare. Voters clearly expressed their will to reject implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) via Proposition 106 in 2010.
If this expansion goes through, nearly one-fourth of all Arizonans will receive free taxpayer paid medical care. This isn’t a “safety net” for the poorest citizens. It is an incentive program for socialized medicine....
Republican state Rep. Ethan Orr and Democratic state Rep. Victoria Steele (both of Tucson’s District 9) stopped by AZ Illustrated Politics to bring viewers up to speed on the legislative session. Arizona Capitol Times reporter Hank Stephenson joined the panel to discuss Gov. Jan Brewer’s proposal to expand Medicaid to 133 percent of the federal poverty level, as well as the latest on the st...
When I heard the draft immigration bill was 844 pages long, I cringed and sighed. There was no way I could ever get into reading a bill that huge.
Or so I thought.
I downloaded the bill in pdf format from this site. You could do the same. To my (pleasant) surprise, the bill was not unreadable.
First of all, look at the sample page below. On a sheet of paper 8-1/2 inches wide, the text would only occupy 3-1/2 inches! And it’s double spaced. The average line is only 6 or 7 words ...
Whenever we see the word comprehensive attached to a huge piece of legislation designed to tackle a major issue, we should take cover and hold onto our wallets.
The so-called comprehensive approach to solving vexing national problems is now standard operating procedure in the United States Congress. It is a misguided and deeply flawed approach that leads to bureaucratic bloat, runaway costs, and a host of unintended consequences.
The Congressional debate on so-called comprehensive immigration re...
YUMA, ARIZONA –– U.S. Congressman Paul Gosar, D.D.S. (AZ-04), joined by Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne, received a border briefing at the Marine Corps Air Station in Yuma, Arizona to better understand the new technology available for border security and safety. The Yuma border sector has shown dramatic success in stopping illegal immigration starting in 2005. The Yuma sector utilizes state of the art radar and thermal imaging and uses close coordination among the border patrol, the Mari...
Recently I have been asked by many for my thoughts on the governor’s Medicaid expansion proposal. This is a complex issue and there isn’t a simplistic or short form answer. It is my hope that your newspaper will print my thoughts to you without editorializing or editing because this is an extremely important decision and will have significant impacts on the lives of the residents of Arizona and Legislative District 6.
Readers of WFP are well aware that Ann Kirkpatrick has a history in which two activities are prominently featured: prevarication and ducking voters or any hard questions.
We already knew that Arizona Democrat Ann Kirkpatrick doesn’t like to show up to vote. But apparently when she does, she doesn’t even understand what she’s voting on.
Hearing held on legislation to restrain presidential power
WASHINGTON, D.C.-U.S. Congressman Paul A. Gosar, D.D.S (AZ-04) introduced the Arizona Land Sovereignty Act (H.R.1495), preventing any president from unilaterally designating national monuments without input from the public. On Tuesday, April 16th, the Subcommittee on Public Lands and Environmental Regulation held a legislative hearing on Rep. Gosar’s bill. Arizona Reps. Franks, Salmon, and Schweikert signed on as original co-spo...
Legislation Is Rushed to Judgment Behind Closed Doors
The United States Senate once moved at a slow and deliberative pace, careful to conduct its work in contrast to the fast-moving schedule in the House of Representatives.
Those days are long gone. Today the Senate is a legislative freight train moving down the track at a breakneck pace with little regard for the details of sound legislating.
Totally abandoned is the legislative process known as “regular order.” In plain English, regular or...
AFL-CIO Plans Major Effort to Pass Gang of Eight Bill
Big labor was quick to endorse the Gang of Eight immigration bill Wednesday, but cautioned that the bill needs changes to avoid what it called “unintended but serious harm” to workers.
Pledging that there will be a roadmap to citizenship in 2013, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka said, “Our cause is unstoppable.”
“As to be expected in an 844-page first response to an issue as complex as immigration, there are several details in the ...
WASHINGTON, D.C. – After introducing H.Res. 153, a resolution deeming Obamacare unconstitutional on the grounds that it violates the Origination Clause of the U.S. Constitution, Congressman Trent Franks (AZ-08), Chairman of the Constitution and Civil Justice Subcommittee, today released the following statement:
“This is a basic Constitutional matter. Last June, the United States Supreme Court upheld Obamacare on the grounds that it is a federal tax, not a mandate. As such, it is subject ...

Last Friday Governor Jan Brewer sided with Democrats and the hospital industry when she vetoed SB1115, a Republican-sponsored health transparency bill. Republicans championed the bill they claim would have required health care providers to make public a list of costs for their 25 most commonly provided services, and would have required health care facilities to make publicly available their prices for their 50 most common outpatient service codes and group codes. Supporters claim the refor...
WASHINGTON, D.C. - On Wednesday, U.S. Congressman Paul A. Gosar, D.D.S (AZ-04) spoke on the House floor urging support and final passage of H.R. 678, the Bureau of Reclamation Small Conduit Hydropower Development and Rural Jobs Act. Rep. Gosar put forth this legislation alongside Congressman Tipton (R-CO) to spur rural economic development and expand production of clean, renewable hydropower by removing regulatory hurdles. The House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed H.R...
