Happy Friday everyone! I am taking a break from the core exercise posts for a time to ask for

Karen hiking Picacho Peak

your help!

I am interested in what you, my readers, want to know. What fitness/exercise/health questions do you have? I would love to make this a thoughtful exchange of information and ideas.  I will try to post at least one question a week with a well-informed and researched answer!

But I need to get the questions, so please don’t be shy. No question is too simple, too stupid, or too embarrassing!

I’d also like to get feedback on which of the following topics most interest you: Music and exercise, Fat burning myths and truths, Exercise and its effects on health issues, Strength-training, How best to exercise for weight loss.

Thanks so much for your help in making this a health and fitness forum for a healthier Tucson! I can’t wait to hear from you!

Remember, I Kare about your health!

p.s. If you want to ask your question privately, feel free to email me at coyoteblonde1@gmail.com

Here’s a question from my girlfriend:
What’s the best way to focus on toning the backs of the thighs?
and I personally would be interested in learning more about the fat burning myths and truths.  Thanks!

    Hi Karen,
I’ve read that squats are bad. Why is that? I do lunges with weights and sit squats and am wondering why squats are considered bad. What exactly is the difference in terms of muscles used and results? Thanks chica!

Susan… thanks for your question. I would actually love to post on this topic. So many great exercises get a bad name due to people not doing them correctly (and getting iinjured) or the need to speak to the masses and be ultra-conservative.  I will address in more detail later, but one quick thing to remember anytime you are doing any type of exercise, is to keep your body in its normal, natural alignment at all times. That includes the alignment of the entire spine (think of a straight line between your ears, shoulders and hips) as well as the alignment of your limbs (such as keeping the hips, knees and ankles in proper alignment). It is sometimes much more difficult to do the exercise properly (meaning you may not be able to lift as much weight), but you will get so much more from the exercise with much less chance of injury.  More later…

Sorry I missed this one…was out of town.
Any info on triceps is good. Also, I’m always looking for harder swimming workouts or exercises in the pool.

Welcome back, Dianne! Hope you had fun at the Celtic Festival! Thanks for your suggestions. I will put the tricep workout on my list, but you DO realize that isolating muscles like the biceps and triceps is really more of a vanity thing… they are not major muscle groups and so we don’t get as much bang for our buck functionally speaking… however, that said, I know it is the aesthetics that are most appealing to people when it comes to weight-training.  Sigh…
Water workout info is a great idea for this time of year so that may have to go higher on the list! Stay in touch…

Okay…understand about the tricep thing. I swear I’m not vain! lol
My hands and arms are crucial for my job. If anyone has ever tried to just stand in one stop and hold your upper arms out, even with your shoulder and from the elbow to your hands, hold that part around where your head is. Now, do it for an hour while wrapping a perm, or even half hour for a haircut.
Just want to keep them strong because I love my job, and I don’t want them getting tired.
