Thank you Karen for your articles relating to the Editor's note. I can't tell you how infuriating this makes me. I am a marketing and office manager and partner in a local Oriental Medicine office here in Tucson. This wonderful medicine having been used by billions of people for over 5,000 years hasn't been discredited in it's countries of Origin. So you would think if it's not viable or credable it would weed itself out. Having first hand experience with numerous ailments cured by this medicine....I want everyone to know it's the best alternative to staying healthy and their best option to treat many many conditions. Western Medicine is great for an emergency, but for wellness and as a mainstream health care it just doesn't work. I like to refer to it as sickcare...because it doesn't do anything to prevent an ailment...just cover it with drugs and their side effects. Thanks for listening. We in this end of medicine do not have big pharma to pay for educating or advertising the masses. So I for one...appreciate your efforts to set the record straight. I spend my day getting the word out here locally and that's a big enough group to master without having to get into AP's vast population of readers. Feel free to come by for a visit and a tour.

all the money that will saved in healthcare…
Nope - despite claims by the anti-smoking industry, studies have shown that smokers save healthcare dollars and people who don't smoke wind up costing more. Non smokers live longer (costing more) and then eventually die of something else - often something more expensive.

As to the breast cancer screening issue - no one would want to be the one person who wasn't screened at age forty and then went on to develop a malignancy. The panel recommended that women under fifty decide, along with their doctor and based on their individual risk, when to begin screening. Nothing happens in a vacuum. Resources used in one area are resources not available in another. Even routine screening for every woman beginning at forty would not catch every case, while at the same time it would result in a larger number of false positives requiring biopsy and using more resources unproductively.

The biggest danger I can see is that of the insurance companies using the panel's recommendations to deny coverage for mammograms to anyone under fifty. This is what would result in many more unnecessary deaths.

One big problem with determining the effectiveness of some alternative medicines is that they are substances that cannot be patented. If a pharmaceutical company cannot be awarded a patent, they are unlikely to spend the money to do the research to prove the effectiveness of a medication. On top of this, now that alternative medications can be sold OTC without FDA approval, i.e., proof that they are "safe and effective", another incentive for investigation is gone.
