Santa Cruz Farmers Market
The hours are from 3 to 6 p.m. As usual the market brims with garden fresh produce such as green beans, melons, chilies, tat soi, mustard greens, winter squash, (I’m getting hungry), spinach, bok choy, beets, pomegranates, apples, locally roasted coffee, honey, red and sweet potatoes, hot peppers, and more. Fresh eggs are available for $3/dozen. Mark your calendars because next week – November 19, Desert Harvesters will be here grinding dried mesquite pods into flour.

What’s Tat Soi?
Tat soi or tatsoi is an Asian green that is also called flat cabbage, rosette bok choy, and spoon cabbage. It’s a member of the brassica family which includes broccoli, brussels sprouts, collards, and kale. Tatsoi can be used in salads or sautéed, steamed or braised and mixed with sauces, chicken, tofu, and pasta. Tatsoi is low in calories and high in minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants.

Mesquite Pancakes
Last week I reported about Desert Harvesters mesquite pancake breakfast on November 7. This was their most successful breakfast ever selling over 2,000 pancakes, and milling over 960 pounds of mesquite pods with three mills on the pancake fiesta day and two mills the next day.

Sprouts Goes Green
Sprouts Farmers Market has joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s GreenChill Advanced Refrigeration Partnership and voluntarily committed to decreasing refrigerant emissions through innovative HVAC, refrigeration design and leak-tight practices. Sprouts wants to be your  environmentally conscious neighbor and grocer. Sprouts is located at 7665 N. Oracle Road.

Thanks for the info on the Santa Cruz River Farmer’s Market. I will be checking it out this Thursday. I have gotten very interested in eating more local and fresh and I am pleased to know that Tucson has many options. I need to read your blog more often!  Sorry… no recipes that I can vouch for for tatsoi… but a quick search for tatsoi recipes on google led to several good prospects. I would be happy to try some of them and report if I get a hold of some tatsoi this week….

Thanks for reading and responding. I read your blog too. I will respond more.
A friend told me that this coming Thursday is the last week for the Santa Cruz River Farmers Market until January.
I have not checked out whether that is true or not but my friend shops there so I trust her info.
I will certainly post about when I confirm.
Yes, please share your tatsoi recipes. I wonder if some of the Asian markets also have tatsoi. Carolyn mentioned an Asian market on south Craycroft that she likes.
Speaking of Asian markets, Lee Lee Oriental Supermarket from Phoenix says they will be opening this month. However, they also said that in September and October.

    Hi Karyn,
Thanks for the info on tat soi. I’ve never heard of it, but it sounds really good. Have you tried it, and if so, how do you like to best prepare it? I’m really interested, because I love veggies!

      AZm

I haven’t tried tat soi yet. Right now in my vegetable bin I have beets and beet greens and mustard greens. I’m determined to try those first.

I pick up my Tucson CSA share every other week and I have a feeling tat soi will be in there soon so when I try it, I will let you know.

      Thanks for commenting.

Does anyone have a recipe or recipe ideas for tat soi that they can share with AZm and the rest of us?
