Farmers Market Finds

Everyone probably has a favorite farmers market or markets. You may have favorites based on location, proximity, choices, friendly farmers, quality, parking, and prices.

American Farmland Trust had a contest for favorites and here’s the results:

One lucky Tucson farmers market was ranked in the top 20 in the United States:

Santa Cruz River Farmers Market is ranked in 12th place in all of the U.S. – Congratulations! The Santa Cruz River Farmers Market recently changed location to the Mercado San Agustin and when it cools off another 10 degrees I’m going to check it out.

Now in Arizona — two Tucson farmers market beat our neighbors to the north in Phoenix and Flagstaff.

Congratulations to first-place winner Sunday at St. Philip’s Plaza Farmers Market and to again Santa Cruz River Farmers Market in second-place. Tucson wipeout!

So what’s your favorite farmers market and why?

I have not been to St. Philip’s Plaza market in awhile but like to get Double Check grass fed meat when I do go. One of these days I’ll try the new Santa Cruz location. I drove past the Broadway Village (Country Club/Broadway) farmers market on Friday at 9 a.m. and saw no sign of activity. For awhile farmers markets were popping up en masse and I just couldn’t see how they could all be sustained. I was right; they can’t be. When I go to a farmers market I want fresh vegetables not slivers of homemade soap or salsa. Those are secondary items. Farmers simply could not spend that much time away from farming. Now Allen’s Organics seems to have the right idea.

I was surprised at the size of the St. Philip’s Plaza farmer’s market this summer, and the vendors told me it is usually larger in the cooler months.  No wonder they won first place.  I sometimes stop by the little farmer’s market downtown (Wednesdays only) in front of the Joel D. Valdez Main Library, but it needs to increase in size and selection.
