Tucson’s newest farmers market at Broadway Village

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

I went to the Broadway Village farmers market last Friday and was pleasantly surprised. The place was bursting with activity, especially for a new venue. I hope the buzz continues.

I bought a blood orange tree from JLC Gardens. I love the tartness of scarlet-hued blood oranges. Grow baby grow.

According to June Hussey who does public relations for the new owners of Broadway Village, the idea for this farmers market came from the neighbors who remembered the long gone Broadway Village Market and wanted to recreate the atmosphere where they could buy fresh produce and baked goods in a congenial setting. BV Market has been closed for the past 20 years.

There will be a constant new tide of vendors as seasons come and go and more people learn about this new farmers market. What I liked was the indoor/outdoor spaces of cooling umbrellas and landscaped courtyards and the 6,000 square feet inside the former Table Top which held many food vendors offering samples in a cool space with even a few tables to sit down and eat. Outside was a catering truck surrounded by its own enticing aromas of pulled pork sandwiches.
Some of the vendors may include Stout’s Cider Mill (Cider and Fruit Pies), Wilde Rose Coffee Co., Blue Jewel Body Care, Keva Juice, San Rafael Valley Natural Beef, M Triangle Ranch, Paula’s Mexican Restaurant, Wild West Kettle Korn, Huatabampo Sonora Hot Dogs, 50 Mile Farms (lettuce), Sweet Art (baked goods), Gelato Dessert Café, Buckaroo Brand Wild Alaskan Salmon, Arizona Rub, K & B Distributors (roasted corn, chilies), Five-Star Jerky, Seasonal Fresh (Florence produce), Supernatural Organics, Sun Valley Farms (Willcox), Tubac Farms (only organic produce), My Fertile Farm (fertile eggs), Blue Hen Farm (eggs), Picture Rocks Cactus Nursery, Ausperitea (Asian tea company), Yuma Citrus Growers, Natural Soap Company, Deep Breath Designs (herbal products), Cheryl Kline and Kristan’s Bags (coif grocery bags), Arizona Cactus Ranch (prickly pear products), Tucson Tamale Company, Blackberry Bear Creations (knitted items & yarn), Giovanni’s Cafe (mobile kitchen with a 9-page menu), Indigenous Nutrition (honey and superfoods), David Romero’s Dried Nuts & Fruits, Truly Tuff Tool (an eco-friendly hoe), Denize Designs Handcrafted Gifts, Etched in Stone (decorative concrete work), Southwest Salsa Company, Inca’s Peruvian Cuisine (empanadas & bakery items), Performance Fitness, La Baguette French Bakery & Breads, Speedy BBQ  (ribs and sandwiches), Savon Flowers, and Bella Fiore (custom silk floral & Southwest designs).

Broadway Village is located on the southwest corner of Broadway/Country Club. There’s plenty of parking in the back. Hours are from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
