Bicycle Tune Up at SCR Farmers Market

New fall hours are 3 to 6 p.m. Tucson’s new temps lends itself to perfect bicycle weather. Today at the Santa Cruz River Farmers Market, the El Grupo Youth Cycling Club will offer free bike tune ups, changing a tire demos, and bicycle maps from 4 to 6 p.m.

Music at Broadway Village Farmers Market

The nationally touring, songwriting duo of Coco and Lafe will perform live at Broadway Village this Friday, October 9, between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The Vermont-rooted folksingers, Coco Kallis and Lafe Dutton, are making the stop in the Old Pueblo on their nationwide tour of farmers markets. The duo has appeared twice on Conan O’Brien. The performance is free and open to the public.

Friday’s Farmers Market at Broadway Village is Tucson’s only indoor/outdoor air-conditioned farmer’s market, where more than 40 independent Arizona vendors showcase their products, from locally-grown organic produce and grass-fed beef, to baked goods and indigenous plants. Imported certified organic fruits and vegetables, and fresh seafood are also offered.

New fall hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Friday. Broadway Village is located at the southwest corner of Broadway Boulevard and Country Club. Become a fan on Facebook .

 Tucson Eat Yourself

The event is really Tucson Meet Yourself but ‘fess up, you all go for the food. Sure, there is plenty of ethnic culture in the form of music, dance, crafts, native costumes, but the magnet is the food presentation and aromas wafting through the air. Eat foods from around the world – Jamaica, Korea, Lao, Hungary, Filipino, Costa Rico, Poland, Persia, and dozens more. It all happens October 9-11 in and around the main library plaza in downtown Tucson.

Nothing tastes better than a ripe tomato

Nothing tastes better than a ripe tomato

Let’s do a rain dance. The rain last night was glorious.

Coming soon: Lee Lee
Tucson is about to go global in a big produce way when Lee Lee Oriental Supermarket comes to town. Lee Lee, already well known in Phoenix, opens later this month at 1900 W. Orange Grove.

Kindness Project
This Saturday receive a free breakfast at all three Sunflower Markets locations when you donate school supplies for the Shyanne Kindness Project. Because of budget cuts, Tucson’s schools will not be able to buy supplies which means economically-stressed children will go without. Locations: 4282 N. First Ave., 4645 E. Speedway, and 7877 E. Broadway @ Pantano.
Thursday-Santa Cruz River Farmers Market
You can always use your credit, debit, and EBT cards. Probable produce available includes purslane*, garlic, tomatoes, okra, squash, Asian melons, red and yellow fleshed watermelons, and much more from 4 to 7 p.m. on the NW corner of Speedway and Riverview.

Saturday-Rincon Valley Farmers & Artisans Market
At this rustic southeast venue not only will you find farmers but plenty of artisans at well.  For now, let’s stick to food – mesquite flour, dog biscuits, heirloom tomatoes, mini cucumbers, baby lettuce, summer melons, green onions, Brussel sprouts, handmade tamales, fresh breads, and much more from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.  at 12500 E. Old Spanish Trail. You can use WIC checks here with certain farm vendors.

8th Annual Roasted Chile Festival
Save September 19 for the 8th Annual Roasted Chile Festival at the Rincon Valley Market. More info coming later.

Purslane
What’s purslane? It’s a weed of some kind

Tucson food news

Bashas
It’s no secret that Bashas is facing financial problems and some stores will be closing. As of the latest news, the Bashas located on I-19 and the Duval Mine Road exit in Sahuarita will close. As the bankruptcy proceeds, so might more Bashas and/or Food City stores.  The one and only Ike’s Farmers Market which was located on Oracle Road near the town of Catalina already closed February 2009. Amazingly, Ike’s competed with the Bashas near Saddlebrooke.

Sweet corn & peaches, oh my
Nothing says summer like the taste of sweet corn on the cob and ripe peaches. Why not consider taking the family or a carload of friends to Apple Annie’s Orchard in Willcox? For the remaining weekends in July,  enjoy a celebration of sweet and juicy tree-ripened peaches.  The 12th annual Peach Mania starts with a delicious “All You Can Eat” pancake with peaches breakfast served from 7 to 10:30 a.m. each weekend day. Take a free wagon ride and experience the orchards beauty. The Peach Pavilion features free samples of tasty peach products. Sit in the shaded peach orchard and enjoy a slice of homemade peach pie or a bowl of homemade peach ice cream. You can also enjoy hot roasted sweet corn; pick your own corn, vegetables, and  peaches all the while spending a memorable day on the farm with family and friends.

Mark your calendar: Food & Wine Festival
The Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance (SAACA) presents a Food & Wine Festival on October 17 and 18 at Rillito Raceway Park.
