Eat at Piggies; And stay thin

by on Jun. 12, 2010, under Health

Have you ever visited a restaurant named Greasy Tony’s, Fatburger, or Piggie’s? My husband and I vacationed in southern California recently, and he was craving one of his favorite restaurants, Piggie’s Charbroiled Restaurant

I told him that I couldn’t, with good conscience, eat at a place with a name like that.  Then he gave me his “puppy dog eye” look, and before I knew it, we were walking into Piggie’s.

However, I know I can eat at any restaurant, no matter what the name, and still live the thin life. Piggie’s serves a variety of American, Mexican and Asian food, and when we we walked in I took a look around and saw people eating double bacon cheeseburgers, platters of nachos dripping with all the fixin’s, and french fries drowning in chili and cheese. I could see I was going to have to be very creative.

My husband was craving the hamburger and fries, and recommended those to me, so I chose the hamburger.  I took the bun off, only because I didn’t like the taste of it (I never eat anything I don’t like), and ate just the burger and the rest of the fixin’s with a knife and fork.  That way I could eat the lettuce, tomato and onions with every bite of meat.  I ate some of his french fries, along with some ketchup.  Along with my Diet Coke, I figured I consumed around 400 calories, a nice-sized lunch that I didn’t have to feel bad about.

Piggie’s also offers charbroiled, skinless chicken breasts, salads, and Italian vinaigrette salad dressing — all good choices. Eat what you like, don’t be afraid to pick apart a meal — and throw the rest of your meal away after you get full (or take it home if you think you might like the rest later).

One reason I have maintained a 50-pound weight loss since 2001 is because I can always find something to eat, at any restaurant I go to — no matter what the name.

Sonja, I like your blog title “Living Thin” especially nowadays with Americans so overweight and obese.  Dieting is all about self control, which you obviously exhibited at Piggie’s.  And it’s about substituting fruits & veggies for greasy, fatty foods like french fries, rich desserts, white flour products.   Good luck with staying thin.

Thanks, Carolyn! It can be tricky to keep the weight off once it’s lost, but it can be done — and it’s always worth it.

GOOD article with a powerful message.  Ive been dieting for decades, trying every diet that I came across, but, yo-yo’ing up and down until I hit 312 lbs… That did it, made the decision that I was going to find an eating program, instead of a diet and stay on it for life.  A friend who had gotten rid of weight and kept it off, turned me on to Atkins.  Bought the book, practically memorized it. (Well read it at least 3 times, highlighting what was important.
The rest is history, am now at my lowest weight since getting out of the Army, when my most fittest.  Now am at 234, headed to 200-210 my weight when the Korean War ended.
Succeeded by using what I call DECISION  POWER.  First gained by making bad decisions, succeeded in controlling my weight, by making good ones, over, and over, and over, similar to the decisions that you made.  My worst problems came from Ice Cream, decided that until I reached my healthiest weight, would eat none.  Once, three weeks into my program, tried some, thought what am I doing, took it to the sink and ran hot water into it.  Watching it run down the drain, until it was gone.  Have never had a desire to eat Ice Cream since then.

Congratulations on the fantastic weight loss, kingair315! Atkins is one of my favorites, since it’s easy to stick to with the protein choices, especially when eating out.  Good job with the ice cream, too — I have tossed many tempting things down the garbage disposal, out of sight, out of mind, but it has to be gone-gone so you can’t go back after it! :)
Welcome to living the thin lifestyle!
