Confessions of a V-8 Addict

by on Aug. 26, 2010, under Health

V-8, it's a beautiful thing!

V-8 is one of the most perfect drinks available in the modern world today.  I find myself getting a little shaky if I don’t have at least three 5.5 ounce cans of it per day — thus, the addiction.

That amount equals over three servings of vegetables per day — I love it!

Besides also being tasty, V-8 is low in calories and has zero fat grams.  This makes it the perfect food for living the thin lifestyle!

V-8 is chock full of seven different types of vegetables, and is full of lycopene — which is mostly found in tomatoes (V-8 is 87% tomato juice).  Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant that  protects against cell damage.  In an 8-oz. glass of V-8, there is four times as much lycopene as is found in a medium-sized tomato. An 8-oz. glass of V-8 also contains as much potassium as a medium-sized banana.

My favorite snack is a 5.5 ounce can of V-8 and about 15 almonds — low calorie and heart healthy, and extremely satisfying.  Perhaps this is why my blood pressure is only 112/62?

Consuming V-8 can also make up for a less-than-perfect diet, and still let you stay thin and healthy, as seen in this YouTube V-8 commercial:

V-8 offers a low-sodium version for those trying to cut down on salt;  70% less.  There is also Spicy V8, V-8 fruit drinks and now V-8 soups.  And, V-8 is completely gluten-free!

At 30 calories per 5.5 ounces, V-8 is really quite a bargain dietwise.  I buy my V-8 by the case at Sam’s Club for around $10.00, which lasts me over a week.  Not bad for a V-8 addiction!

V-8:
Tastes Great
Low Calories
Settles stomach
Low Fat
Settles blood sugar levels
Healthy
Low Cost
Not such a bad addiction, hmm?

Hey… I love V8 myself. Preferably, laced with vodka, tabasco,, worcestershire sauce and a touch of horseradish. As a morning snack…say before 9 am… it is perfectly acceptable plain.

But that stuff is absolutely loaded with salt, which is not god for some of us.

Not good, that is…although the typo is an unintended gag.

Hi Lovely! This is great news! I have always loved V-8 but was afraid it was too fattening because of the salt. I am going out today and stocking up! Keep up the Good Fight!!

Only be afraid of the salt if you are watching your blood pressure — otherwise, V-8 is a beautiful thing! So tasty! Just had my first one of the day, yummy. Vegetable juice is so good for you, and the Campbell’s Soup Co., who makes V-8, has taken all the work out of making it for us (thank you!).

There’s always the sodium-free version of V-8, if you like! Might taste ok with those Bloody Mary’s…..

I’m very fond of it, but as a brand name it’s way overpriced.
When I lived other places Kroger had a “store brand” that was reasonably priced, but they don’t carry it here so I get the store brand Tomato Juice which is also good.

Fry’s is Kroger’s in Tucson — have you tried there? Otherwise, that’s why I buy my cases of V-8 at Sam’s Club, which makes it more affordable. V-8 has such a nice recipe! I used to have a Vita-Mix back in the day – oy vey – what a mess and hassle that was, plus, the vegetable juice never tasted quite right and it had to be consumed within a day or two or would go bad — just another reason why I love V-8!

I make mine from fresh vegetables. According to Dr. Norman Walker, canned food is like riding a dead horse. The enzymes are cooked out in the canning process so the nutrients are also dead and it becomes a condiment. Can’t kill the minerals though.

I would love to taste your “fresh” V-8! Mmmmm.

OK, so I stopped and bought Low Sodium V-8 and almonds. Then stopped at Pizza Hut and picked up a pizza! Can’t be completely good all at once!

    Love those legs!

    • Cherlyn Gardner Strong

Fraser007, that made me laugh. Besides your fixation on Sonja’s legs (which are undeniably nice), do you have anything to say about V8?

      • fraser007

After I read the article I went and had a glass. I forgot that I had a bottle of it in the frig and just how good it is for me. Always love the pics of Sonja. Mmmmmmm

Love, love the captcha. Anyway…. I love V8, but tend to get a bit of acid reflux from it. It’s nothing that Tums can’t cure.

So, I like blending fresh veggies in the blender. It comes out tasting quite a bit like V8, but also like fresh Gazpacho. Either way, I like both.

What a great idea, Cherlyn! Love the Gazpacho idea!

I liked the link to the youtube video, that makes the blog twice as interesting. It was starting to get me to want a V-8.

Love this talk about V8. I think I am addicted, seriously, I buy the two Quart size, and drink half of the bottle each night! I only drink the Low Sodium version, but still, can I be addicted to this stuff? I love it and crave it daily! I think its better than craving a soda right?
