Sneaky Diet Words Designed to Trick Dieters

Read the labels to know for sure

How many sneaky diet words can you think of that are designed to pull the diet-wool over our eyes so we think we are eating better?

Low Calorie.  Low Carb. Low Fat. Organic.

A study published in the Journal of Consumer Research reported that when “diet words” are used, it actually caused people to eat more, especially dieters, since they are focused on trying to eat less forbidden foods. Non-dieters were less likely to fall for the “diet words.”

Most dieters assume that if it has a healthy name, then it is.  Wrong.  There’s no way to know unless you read the label.

Recent research also suggests that organic food benefits from a “halo” effect, tricking people into thinking it’s healthier, that there is significantly less calories and fat and more fiber in organic food — also not necessarily true.

These foods can be the exact same thing:

Fruit Chews = Candy Chews

Veggie Chips = Potato Chips

Fruit Smoothie = Milkshake

Salad = Pasta

Can you think of others?

Before you buy something because it has one of those words on it, read the label first.  Read Harvard Study Reveals “Calories In, Calories Out” because no matter what you eat, that’s what it boils down to when trying to lose or maintain weight.  Don’t let the sneaky words, designed to coax even more money out of your already diet-weary wallet, get  you.

    I have noticed in recent years some companies putting things like, “Now Fat Free” on the labels when they never had fat to begin with.  I find that misleading.  If they put Fat Free, then people who cared about that would notice, but putting now implies that the product is a different version than before.

    Sugar free is on a lot of items which is great for people who can not have sugar, but sometimes I think it is used as a trick, as well, making people think it must be lower in calories than its sugary counterpart.

    I think salad is one of the biggest words that “trick” inexperienced dieters.  While some restaurants offer healthy salads, most fast food and sit down restaurants have crazy salads.  Many have so much “stuff” in them that they way over 1000 calories!  Like  you, I do not pay too much attention to things outside of calories and feel badly for people who think they are making a smart decision with a  ”salad” when it is not what the enjoy while they are looking longingly at a meal someone else has wishing they could have it.  In reality, though, as they slather on the dressing they are sometimes consuming an entire day’s worth of calories in one sitting.  I really like Panera Bread’s summer salad, because it is low in calories, very filling, and definitely makes my body hum!

      shrinkingnadia: You are definitely living the thin lifestyle, by being aware of tricky diet words like “now fat free” or “sugar free” making people think those products are lower in calories, or different than it was before. Salads are also a choice dieters have to beware of, and salad dressing can sabotage a calorie-counter’s meal in a heartbeat for sure. I love Panera Bread, too! They have many wonderful, healthy choices. Live thin and live well, my friend!
