What you say is technically keep in true, but there are two additional considerations:

1. The amount of calories you need to eat to maintain your current weight is not a fixed number and can be easily influenced by the kinds of food you eat as well as your other habits. Simply cutting back on calories any which way you like, without any other considerations, can easily slow down your metabolism.

2. It's true 3500 calories equals one pound of fat, but it's not true that 3500 calories equals one pound of weight lost, because it's possible to lose lean muscle mass as well as fat when you are dieting. And when you lose lean muscle, your metabolism will slow down for sure.

Main point, it's not really true in practice that if you cut down your diet by x calories you will lose y pounds. You also need to be mindful of what effect your diet and your other habits are having on your metabolism.

I agree that a calorie is a calorie is a calorie, BUT there is a difference in how how your body deals with calories from different foods, If a diet includes the right kind of foods that are high in fiber, not all the calories will be taken into your system because the fiber helps push things through your system more quickly.

Children can do amazing things (like lose weight) with encouragement, understanding, and tools -- like what Michelle Obama is doing. I wish I had that as a child, rather than public gym weighings.....(still makes me cringe to think about it, all these years later).

This is hurtful to overweight children. I am opposed to any public humiliation of children in any setting. This is between children, parents and doctors. Schools are out of line on this.
