With the picture that you paint, existing industrialized nations should be invading third world countries and annihilating their population for causing overpopulation and holding "inferior" ideas. Granted our intentions are not entirely altruistic. Sometimes we exploit third world countries for personal gain. Sometimes however we help third world countries out of compassion and teach them what we know. Give them what we have. Knowledge of medicine. Educational assistance. Humanitarian aid. Might not a superior artificial intelligence that has surpassed humanity look upon our civilization of lowly humans as a "third world country"?

...and movie plots are hardly proof of anything.

Hi Geoff, lovely article. I only learned of Tony's death today through Private Eye. I shall miss his quirky cartoons each fortnight. Your written thoughts have reminded me to get back in contact with some friends I've been out of touch with for a while. Thank you.

Hi Geoff, thank you for writing this article. Tony was my cousin. You obviously knew him well as you have described him perfectly. I always looked up to Anthony (as we used to call him as children) he was always involved with something interesting. He was responsible for my interest in movies beyond the mainstream. His understanding of politics also stretched to family politics where his humour was always spot on.
I have a small collection of some of his drawings, including some of Bruce Lee (another interest he had which he passed on to me), which I will be passing on to my children.
Thanks again

You're assuming that a self-aware AI will be amoral. Why? Morality and ethics are an advanced feature of human intelligence, so a self-aware AI that is much more intelligent by humans may also be much more ethical than humans. The only reason that self-aware AIs in science fiction are usually evil is because that makes for more conflict.

Assimilation may not be so bad. You can imagine how a cave man would resist the assimilation into today's modern day society and lifestyle. He would not be able to see why he would want to trade his freedom in the open meadows for a 9-5 job in a over crowded concrete jungle.

You don't need to worry - because none of the people I've seem in IT has the least clue how the brain works or what consciousness is, so they won't be successful.

Phillip K. Dick, on the other hand, DID know.

Hi Geoff, well written and lovely colums. The most self deprecating thing about the self portrait is the name of the file - when he first sent it out it was called 'Tony Can't Scan", that's so Tony. I too work in TV, I make medical TV (as a producer/ director) and I presented an OK but not brilliant series on Discovery Health - 'Dr Know'. Tony & I met when he was a very good cartoonist and I was a very rubbish one, we worked on a couple of Edinburgh festival shows and became firm friends. You can email me on paul (at) prnfilms.co.nz.
