That’s SO Happening TONIGHT: Lobos at Rialto; Geek-umentary at Loft

Thursday, June 14th, 2012

Don’t sit around complaining about the heat — get out & get cool tonight:

LOBOS EN LA CABEZA

Just try seeing Los Lobos live, then NOT singing their tunes — and praises — for a full week.

But expect more than covers – LL has been together for more than 20 years & 20 albums. They’ve done everything. Originals? Check. Rock? Check. Norteno? Check and check.

How’s it NOT gonna be a fantastic show?

Tonight at the Rialto.

GET YOUR GEEK ON

For the record, I was a geek looooong before it was chic. And yet, I’ve never been to Comic-Con.

Not to worry, Morgan Spurlock, Jason Lee & Joss Whedon have. And they took cameras.

So, if (like me) you’re concerned that your “Princess Leia in the Gold Bikini” costume days are behind you, you’ll still be able to live out your manga fantasies vicariously… from the safety of a nice, dark theater.

Last chance tonight at The Loft.

Venus, If You Will — Venus Transit 2012 Viewings

Tuesday, June 5th, 2012

I definitely have a little girl for me to thrill — namely my daughter Sonia, who loves all things astronomical.

To make sure she doesn’t miss out on today’s Venus transit – a phenomenon that won’t occur again in her lifetime — we’ll be heading out to peep through the telescope at Sky Bar‘s family night.

(Click link above, then scroll down to see images of space taken by the Sky Bar telescope.)

We don’t mind a little urban off-roading, but if you’re not down with the ramped-up 4th Ave construction this week, there are lots of other places to check out today’s awesome display of nature:

Flandrau has way-cool scientists, plus a whole neat-o science center to check out…

Tucson Amateur Astronomy Association will be rockin’ the transit out at Biosphere 2

Kitt Peak‘s celebration includes a boxed dinner & night skies viewing…

Heading up Mt. Lemmon to the Sky Center will provide you with a front-row seat…

Lowe’s Ventana Canyon will be uncorking a special vintage in honor of the transit…

*All of the above events are open to the public — check websites for further details.

** NEVER VIEW A SOLAR EVENT WITHOUT PROTECTIVE EYE GEAR**

And fret not if you just can’t get out of the house… or if your boss insists that you work through the show (stinkin’ fascist)… There are some great online viewing options:

NASA will transmit images from their telescope atop Mount Mauna Kea in Hawaii…

Tune in to the National Solar Observatory website to see live images captured by the world’s finest telescopes…

Slooh will also broadcast about 15 different live feeds from around the world, along with talk-radio-style guests and the ability to “snap” your own transit pics.

Happy Viewing!!! :) :) :)
