We’re so lucky. Tucson’s businesses have some of the coolest signs ever.

Here are just a few — I’ll be back later this summer with an all-neon edition, too!

I’ve been to some famous museums — the Carnegie in Pennsylvania, the Louvre in Paris, and the Sex Museum in Amsterdam. (Three times. What?)

But what blows them all away in terms of coolness? The Tucson Gay Museum.

This collection of Tucson’s gay history is absolutely amazing. And groundbreaking — it’s the first All Virtual “Gay” Museum in the world!

The site escorts visitors through decade after decade of gay culture nationwide and its impact upon the gay community here in Tucson. It also illustrates the hard work and dedication of Tucsonans, both past and present, whose work fosters awareness and acceptance for all.

Plus, because it’s an online museum, there’s no entry fee and you can be as loud as you want.

Fabulous!

** The very dedicated folks over at Tucson Gay Museum tell me that as technology advances, so will the TGM experience. Eventually, visitors will be able to virtually stroll the museum’s halls, “feeling” the textures of the exhibits and interacting with holographs. Neato!

Remember Value Village on 4th Ave? Ahh… take a stroll down memory lane with me…

The method-to-the-madness t-shirt racks… the tangled wall of purses… the never-ending stretch of kitchen tools along the north wall… the precariously perched coffee makers… the eternally morphing furniture pit…

Who didn’t spend half of the ’90s there?

I think we all shed a metaphorical tear when Goodwill took over residence at the corner of 4th & 8th.

But no worries — the Village has simply relocated!

Now on Stone Ave. just south of Glenn, the new Value Village is bright, clean, well-organized… and still somehow has that Value Village je-ne-c’est-quoi. Truly. It feels just the same.

Funky, fabulous, secondhand. Quintessentially Tucson.

This was a REAL problem for me. I’m a recycling junkie. What would become of me without my beloved curbside pickup?!?

Would I sink into an ecological malaise, justifying my liberal guilt by saying things like, “Well, I’m sure my 10,000 little yogurt cups won’t cause the end of the world.” ??? Oh the horror!!

Or worse, worse — I’d become a hoarder. I’d meticulously rinse and store every scrap of recyclable material I came across… my house one giant, swaying pile of toilet paper rolls and juice bottles…

No! NO!!!

Fortunately, when I called the lovely folks over at Tucson Clean & Beautiful, they pointed me to a couple of neighborhood recycling centers in my neck of the Pueblo.

Whew — visit from Adult Protective Services averted!

It’s nothing fancy, just a couple of giant blue dumpsters.

You can put all the same stuff in them that you’d put in the curbside bins — and there’s no need to sort.

Just toss your clean recyclables in — free, easy, convenient.

You say you want a revolution? We all wanna cup of joe…

Revolutionary Grounds is part coffee shop, part bookstore.

But not in a corporate, best-seller & a latte kind of way. More in a leftist ideology way.

Which is fine with me, as long as the dogma is accompanied by tasty treats and excellent espresso. Which it is.

We stopped by for a quick hug & hi with a visiting out-of-town friend, and ended up staying for nearly half an hour, chatting with the staff & browsing the shelves — which included tons of educational toys. (We picked up a cool wooden toy set at a totally fair price.)

The service was friendly, and pretty fast. You know… for proletariat wage slaves.

Revolutionary Grounds supports fair trade, provides vegan options & promotes local art/music.

And not once did they try to brainwash us into overthrowing the capitalist state.

On the down side, their outdoor seating could definitely use more shade.

This is for-real fun. We showed up around 5 pm, signed in easily & took a few minutes to jam out…

Then we got our stroll on, checking out the downtown construction & soaking up some of the Pueblo’s coolest landmarks…

And sampling downtown’s tastiest treats…

Do yourself a favor & join in — the Meet Me at Maynard’s urban walk/run is held every Monday. Kiddos in strollers & well-behaved canine pals are encouraged to participate!

On May 19th, throngs of Tucsonans camped out in the Rillito River bed to witness the sunset flight of thousands of bats who live under the Campbell Ave. bridge.

And…
