Health Care Bill: What happens next?

by on Mar. 22, 2010, under Health

The Democratic Caucus provided a list of provisions in the health care bill that will take effect immediately. The legislation would:

*Prohibit pre-existing condition exclusions for children in all new insurance plans;

*Provide immediate access to insurance for Americans who are uninsured because of a pre-existing condition through a temporary high-risk pool;

*Prohibit dropping people from coverage when they get sick in all individual plans;

*Lower seniors prescription drug prices by beginning to close the donut hole;

*Offer tax credits to small businesses to purchase coverage;

*Eliminate lifetime limits and restrictive annual limits on benefits in all plans;

*Require plans to cover an enrollee’s dependent children until age 26;

*Require new plans to cover preventive services and immunizations without cost-sharing;

*Ensure consumers have access to an effective internal and external appeals process to appeal new insurance plan decisions;

*Require premium rebates to enrollees from insurers with high administrative expenditures and require public disclosure of the percent of premiums applied to overhead costs.

    Well, the dems passed something, with all their backroom wheeling and dealing. I honestly hope it is to all of our benefit, not just a Pyrrhic victory. We shall see in the next 4-5 years, if they can settle all the legal challenges to this legislation in a reasonable amount of time.(Ha!)
    Oddly, you did not mention concerns from both sides of the aisle about the effects this will have on medicare and medicaid, both of which are to be raided substantially to benefit ‘the greater good’. Maybe you brought it to our attention in a previous blog, if so-my apologies.
    I personally would have liked to have seen the insurance industry slammed a bit more and some check on rising costs…perhaps the  16,500 new IRS agents are to keep tabs on medical agencies fraud. ;)
    Something had to be done, I hope this is a step in the right direction and not the usual government boondoggle we are growing so used to at this point in our history.

    Apparently the only way to pass this bill was with back room deals and “deem and pass” shenanigans…

    I agree with the prevailing sentiment which is something needed to be done but I’m not sure this was it.
