Medicare Advantage Enrollment in Pima County: Nearly 50%

by on Apr. 27, 2010, under Health

When Medicare cuts payments to Medicare Advantage plans, 11.5 million people around the country will see “their Medicare” change. This represents 25% of all Medicare beneficiaries. I recently came across a page on the Medicare website that breaks down Medicare Advantage enrollment in every county in the country.  I was shocked to see that in quite a few counties (mostly large urban areas) nearly 50 % of Medicare beneficiaries are enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans.

Throughout Arizona, 34% of Medicare beneficiaries are enrolled in Medicare Advantage.  However, in Pima County 44.83 % are enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans.  In Maricopa County it’s 43.45%.  In Pinal County over 49% of Medicare beneficiaries are enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans.

The numbers below are from the CMS website and were updated in April 2010.

The vast majority of Medicare Advantage enrollees are in HMO plans which require them to use doctors, hospitals, labs, and other providers in their plan’s network.

And exactly what is your point with these statistics?

When certain public officials talk about Medicare Advantage, they say that only 25% of Medicare beneficiaries are enrolled in these private Medicare plans.  As it turns out, there are many locations where nearly 50% of seniors are in Medicare Advantage plans.  And when money is cut from these plans, it’s going to have a big impact in places like Tucson and Phoenix.  Although, in Phoenix, everybody can enroll in the Cigna plan which  will likely get priority treatment (more money) because it is so highly  rated. (See my previous post.)

Sorry, for the repeat – but I cleaned up the links -

It will be interesting to see if Medicare Advantage plans can compete with the more traditional Medicare Supplemental Insurance.  Once the cuts are fully implemented insurers will have to make up about $70-$100 a month in premiums and benefits. It’s going to align premiums for both Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement in the same ballpark. I don’t see how Medicare Advantage can compete (at the higher premiums) with no network, and no co-pays that a Medicare supplement plan can offer. It’s a shame that Medicare Advantage has not been fully debated and seniors seem to be the only ones to sacrifice in “Health Care Reform”.
