Tucson Metromix - The place to go to find out where to go

The Rialto rocks!

It’s amazing how much touring music continues to come through Tucson despite the time of year. It used to be that things slowed down significantly in the summer months and, while this had a lot to do with the heat, it also had to do with a lack of venues. The Rialto Theatre in recent years has been one of the most consistent venues for live music and, in the 1,400-capacity (or so) category, it has been the most consistent.  (There are a bunch of good shows this week, including at the Rialto – check out our week in rock roundup on Metromix.)

This all makes the current Rialto situation incredibly confusing for music-lovers. In a nutshell: Developers who own the Rialto block delivered an eviction notice to the Rialto Theatre, saying they must vacate spaces (nearby on Congress and Broadway) currently used for storage, a green room and offices. The Rialto folks need these spaces to operate. It’s up to City Council to rectify the situation at this point, and a special study session (at 255 W. Alameda) on the matter is set for 2 p.m. July 7. You can head there in person to show your support, show strength in numbers and all that. Probably the most effective thing to do would be to call or email council members and Mayor Bob Walkup to see where they stand on the issue and to voice your opinion. Here’s their contact info: Karin Uhlich (791-4711, karin.uhlich@tucsonaz.gov ) • Steve Leal (791-4231, steve.leal@tucsonaz.gov) • Regina Romero (791-4040, regina.romero@tucsonaz.gov) • Shirley Scott (791-3100, shirley.scott@tucsonaz.gov) • Nina Trasoff (791-4601, nina.trasoff@tucsonaz.gov) • Rodney Glassman (791-4687, rodney.glassman@tucsonaz.gov) • Mayor Walkup (791-4201, robert.walkup@tucsonaz.gov).
