Though they serve dim sum seven days a week, food reviewer Andi Berlin prefers to order it at Gee’s Garden on the weekends. The difference: During the week, you order off a menu, whereas on Saturdays and Sundays you just point to what you want from the carts being rolled around the dining room.

The grey skies, the rain…It has us thinking about comfort food. Specifically, mac ‘n cheese.

So, we went to five places around town putting their own spin on the classic—including Pastiche, where chef/owner Pat Connors makes his extra special with spinach, bacon and Panko bread crumbs.

It was a hot, hot night, at least inside the Surly Wench, which hosted the traveling Pretty Things Peepshow Feb. 21. With members of the Coney Island Circus Sideshow and two international burlesque performers, the vaudeville-style show featured everything from sword swallowing to strip tease. Two Tucsonans – Natasha Noir and Fanny Galore, of Black Cherry Burlesque – joined the performance, too.

About a year or so ago, we starting noticing an increasing number of fashion shows in Tucson. These weren’t the usual shows we’d come to expect—the great fundraisers like SAAF’s Möda Provocateur, for instance—but a new breed that sought out alternative venues from bars to art galleries.

We spotlight six local fashion designers – four with a show Feb. 26 at the Surly Wench – who are part of this wave that swells very much on a do-it-yourself kind of ethos. All are young, all have little to no formal training and all rock it out. (One is Razorz Edge owner Lauren Baker, who oversees the Tucson Fashion Edge blog.)
