It’s back: City garbage fee on Tuesday’s agenda

by on Apr. 06, 2006, under Local, Special

The city’s garbage collection fee is up for debate again next week, with one City Council member calling for a rollback of the fee

Freshman Councilwoman Nina Trasoff, D-Ward 1, is asking for “as much of a reduction as possible in the Environmental Services Fee” beginning July 1, 2007.

Trasoff won her council seat in November in part by campaigning for the elimination of the residential garbage fee, which the city began charging in August 2004.

According to Trasoff’s proposal, the council would create a citizen’s committee to review the budget to determine the amount and timing of the rollback.

“Any findings must assure that financial support for fire, police, parks, prevention programs, potholes and other strategic priorities will not be negatively impacted,” Trasoff wrote.

The city collects about $21 million annually from residents through the garbage fee.

Trasoff has requested the issue be placed on the agenda for Tuesday’s council meeting study session.
