Drivers advised to avoid route, rally downtown Monday

Police will use rolling detours for traffic along the route of Monday’s immigrant rights march from the South Side to Armory Park downtown.

Drivers should avoid the area of Monday’s march, which will start at Ajo Way and 12th Avenue, shift northwest to 10th Avenue up to 18th Street, then turn north on Sixth Avenue to a rally at Armory Park downtown.

Traffic will be barred from those streets while marchers pass through. Streets will be reopened when police see no threat to marchers or motorists.

Police will cordon off a section of downtown near Armory Park. No traffic will be permitted from Scott Avenue to the west, 14th Street to the south, Fourth Avenue to the east and 12th Street to the north during the rally.

Organizers said thousands are expected in the march, which is to begin at 9 a.m. The Armory Park rally is to begin at 12:30 p.m.

Sun Tran bus routes will be altered during the event.

● Route 23 will detour around the march route from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m.

● Routes 7 and 16 will detour from 9:30 until 11 a.m.

● Route 8 will detour around the march and rally areas from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.

The detours could have a ripple effect through the bus system. Riders are advised to expect delays.
