Stay home: City to conduct elections almost entirely by mail
by Tucson Citizen on Apr. 19, 2006, under Elections, LocalThe next time city officials hold an election, they want you to stay away from the polls.
Under action by the City Council yesterday, Tucson will become the largest Arizona city to conduct balloting by mail. The council unanimously OK’d conducting elections that way.
All registered voters will receive ballots and information pamphlets by post. May’s countywide transportation election will not be affected.
City Clerk Kathy Detrick said the move to mail ballots was prompted in part by a recent audit that found most of the city’s polling places did not meet accessibility requirements under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Detrick said she hoped voter participation would increase.
The city will operate a few polling places on Election Day for those who prefer to vote in person.
