Bruins, Afflalo go on cruise control to knock off Chaminade
by The Associated Press on Nov. 21, 2006, under SportsLAHAINA, Hawaii – Arron Afflalo got 11 of his 25 points during UCLA’s game-opening 17-2 run, and the fifth-ranked Bruins beat Chaminade 88-63 Monday night in the opening round of the EA Sports Maui Invitational.
Afflalo hit three 3-pointers in the early run and the Bruins were never threatened by the Division II Silverswords (0-1), the hosts of the eight-team tournament.
No. 4 Ohio State 82, San Francisco 60: At Columbus, Ohio, Mike Conley Jr. and Jamar Butler combined for 16 assists with just two turnovers for the Buckeyes.
No. 8 Alabama 63, Xavier 56: At Charlotte Amalie, U.S. Virgin Islands, Mykal Riley had 13 points, 10 rebounds and five assists to lead Alabama over Xavier for the championship of the Paradise Jam tournament.
No. 9 Duke 71, Air Force 56: At Kansas City, Mo., DeMarcus Nelson had a career-high 23 points and Duke rode a strong-shooting first half to victory over Air Force in the semifinals of the CBE Classic.
No. 12 Memphis 77, Oklahoma 65: At Lahaina, Hawaii, Robert Dozier had 13 points to lead a balanced Memphis offense, and the Tigers beat Oklahoma.
No. 13 Marquette 87, Texas Tech 72: At Kansas City, Mo., Wesley Matthews scored 20 points and Jerel McNeal matched his career high with 19, leading Marquette over Texas Tech in the semifinals of the CBE Classic.
No. 19 Georgia Tech 79, Purdue 61: At Lahaina, Hawaii, freshman point guard Javaris Crittenton got 10 of his 20 points in a four-minute stretch late in the second half to lead Georgia Tech.
No. 20 Kentucky 87, DePaul 81: At Lahaina, Hawaii, Randolph Morris scored 20 points, including nine of Kentucky’s final 11, and the Wildcats won in the opening round of the Maui Invitational.
No. 25 Maryland 71, Winthrop 60: At College Park, Md., Ekene Ibekwe scored 18 points and Bambale Osby ignited a decisive run for Maryland.
California 73, Santa Clara 48: At Berkeley, Calif., Ryan Anderson had a career-high 25 points and nine rebounds as California cruised.
Oregon 79, Rice 73, OT: At Houston, Oregon senior guard Aaron Brooks got six of his game-high 30 points in overtime.
