Public meeting set on open-pit mine plan
by Blake Morlock on Feb. 21, 2007, under LocalRep. Raúl Grijalva, D-Ariz., will hold a public hearing in Tucson on an open-pit copper mine proposed for the Santa Rita Mountains. Grijalva is chairman of the House of Representatives subcommittee that oversees public lands. It will be the first meeting he gavels into session since assuming the role.
The hearing will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Pima County Board of Supervisors hearing room in the county Administration Building, 130 W. Congress St., and will include members of the Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources.
The mine would be on private property along a stretch of the Santa Ritas. Canada-based Augusta Resource Corp. would need to use part of the Coronado National Forest for the mine.
