U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords’ trip to Iraq gave her deeper perspective but showed her nothing that convinced her President Bush’s troop escalation is a good idea.
Giffords, D-Ariz., spent four days with U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl, an Arizona Republican, and two other Washington lawmakers, in Baghdad, Kuwait and Israel. She returned today and held a press conference at Tucson International Airport.
Giffords voted last week to oppose the president’s “troop surge” because it included little or no expansion of diplomatic efforts to end the war.
“A surge can temporarily drive out insurgents or drive them underground,” she said. “It’s not a long-term solution.”
