Immigration reform ads set to begin airing

Where’s the fence? Pro-immigration reform ads are set to begin airing and they ask Arizona Sens. John McCain and Jon Kyl, among others, what happened to a border fence to keep out illegal immigrants and drug runners?

The 30-second spots were filmed at South Mountain Park near Ahwatukee Foothills in Phoenix and began airing this week on the Internet and national cable news networks.

“It’s going to give folks the opportunity to see the spot multiple times and respond to it,” said Ron De Jong, director of communications for Grassfire.dot.org. “And there is no question that they are going to do it. There are going to be a lot of angry Arizonans calling the offices of Kyl and McCain.”

Grassfire’s commercials show three white women driving along a desert road. They stop and look into the vast desert. A voiceover narrator intones, “Last year, Congress authorized 700 miles of fence along the southern border. So far, just a few miles have been built. Now, Congress and the president want to give amnesty to millions of illegal aliens instead of securing the border. Call your senators and give them a message.” Throughout, a woman asks, “Where’s the fence? Where’s the fence?” Then the women spot three Hispanic men running across the road. The woman shouts, “Where’s the fence?”

The men shrug and run off.

The closing shot shows McCain and Kyl and lists their phone numbers. The Arizona Republicans are being targeted because of their prominent roles in authoring the Senate’s immigration reform bill, De Jong said.
