73-year-old bicyclist dies after being struck by a van
by Jeffrey Javier on Aug. 27, 2007, under Local, SpecialA 73-year-old woman was struck and killed by a van while riding her bicycle Saturday night as she was crossing Palo Verde Road near Irvington Road.
The driver of a white 1995 Chevy van traveling south hit Kuijan Jiang as she was crossing the street at 8:13 p.m. She was not wearing a helmet and she was not in a crosswalk, said Dawn Hanke. spokeswoman for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said.
The van’s driver, a man in his 50s, did not see Jiang crossing because it was in a dark area of the roadway and she had walked in front of the driver giving no chance to avoid her, Hanke said.
The collision is still under investigation and officials have not cited the driver.
