Nighthawks’ ‘D’ stymies Buena star

Ironwood Ridge's Dyuan Cherry (24) runs for a first quarter touchdown against Sierra Vista Buena.
Raise your hand if you, like me, wrote off Ironwood Ridge after the Nighthawks’ 0-2 start?
With the best defense in southern Arizona – one that will get better when two starting defensive linemen return to the lineup – Ironwood Ridge is sitting pretty with a 3-2 record.
The Nighthawks’ defense, led by junior linebacker Jake Fischer, can stop just about any run attack around. Friday, it held Sierra Vista Buena star running back Jamal Womble (the same one who has been offered scholarships to Big 10, Big 12, ACC and SEC colleges) to only 31 rushing yards.
Can the Nighthawks do the same down the road when they host Sunnyside on Oct. 26? If they do, not only will they make everyone forget that 0-2 start, they’ll be 5A Southern-B region champions.
