Plan to deny certificates for illegals’ newborns rattles health group

by on Dec. 05, 2007, under Local, Special

PHOENIX – The Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association says it’s troubled by a proposed ballot initiative that would prevent birth certificates from being issued to children of illegal immigrants.

The association is studying the newly filed proposal but says it appears hospital personnel would be burdened with a law enforcement role and could erode care provider-patient trust.

The “Birthright Citizenship Alignment Act” proposed for Arizona’s November ballot would require hospitals to check citizenship of newborns’ parents.
