Winter weather slams state

by on Jan. 08, 2008, under Local, Special

Much of Arizona’s high country was under either winter storm warnings or snow advisories as a powerful storm moved through the state Monday.

Included in the advisory areas were Kingman, the Grand Canyon, Prescott, Sedona and Flagstaff.

The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office in Flagstaff warned mountain travelers of potential avalanche conditions, especially on the San Francisco Peaks.

Since Saturday, authorities have investigated a dozen collisions involving injuries and assisted more than 100 motorists, a sheriff’s office spokesman said. Officials believe a majority of the incidents were related to the stormy weather.

The eastern Mogollon Rim, White Mountains and northern Gila County were under a winter storm warning until 5 p.m., with the National Weather Service forecasting periodic snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour.

By Monday morning, the Flagstaff area received as much as 18 inches of snow. The Arizona Snowbowl accumulated 34 inches above the 10,800-foot level.

Meteorologists predicted snow would taper off throughout the day and become light snow showers around the Grand Canyon and Winslow areas. However, cities closer to the storm system would continue to receive moderate snow fall.
