Tucson man held in death of girlfriend’s baby boy

A Tucson man has been arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder and child abuse in the killing of his girlfriend’s 5-month-old son, a Tucson police spokesman said Sunday.

Alejandro A. Alvarez, 21, was booked into the Pima County Jail where he was ordered held in lieu of $750,000 bail in the slaying of Jayher Holguin, said Sgt. Fabian Pacheco.

Paramedics were called at 9:35 p.m. Saturday to the mother’s home in the 6200 block of South Campbell Avenue in reference to an unresponsive infant.

When the arrived they found the child dead and detectives were called, Pacheco said.

He said detectives learned that the infant was in Alvarez’s care while the boy’s mother was at work.

When she returned home she found here son unresponsive and called 911, Pacheco said.

After an investigation Alvarez was arrested, Pacheco said.

Pacheco said an autopsy was done Sunday, but results were not available. He could not say how the baby was killed or why.

He said Alvarez and the child’s mother had been together for four months and police had no record of domestic violence involving the couple.

The homicide is the third this year and the first child death case, Pacheco said.
