TOHONO CHUL CONCERT SERIES: Desert music ranging from the native flute to Yaqui dancing are on the program as Tohono Chul Park presents its annual concert series. The lineup: • Thursday: Gabriel Ayala and Vince Redhouse perform classical, jazz and flamenco music on guitar and native flute. • May 1: Allen Smith and Rainbow Didge will present the sounds of the Australian aboriginal didgeridoo. • May 15: Alex Maldonado, a Pascua Yaqui flute player, performs with his son Nick, a percussionist, and his daughter Melissa, who sings in the Yaqui language and performs traditional tribal dances. • May 29: The Tucson Guitar Society presents three performances: acoustic blues guitarist Stefan George; Guilherme Vincens plays classical guitar and music from his native Brazil; Ismael Barajas plays flamenco guitar. HOWE GELB: Tucson music veteran Howe Gelb joins Canadian singer-songwriter Kate Maki in a benefit concert for KXCI Community Radio. Gelb and Giant Sand bassist Thøger T. MIX IT UP MUSIC SERIES: This outdoor concert series, now in its sixth year and presented by Park Place, will feature a variety of musicians from throughout southern Arizona with music coordination by Joe Bourne Music, Art and Entertainment Productions. Concerts will be featured every Thursday in April and May. Representatives from Habitat for Humanity will be in attendance. Donations will be appreciated. KISS TRIBUTE CONCERT: This tribute to the legendary rock band – complete with 1970s era makeup, costumes and special effects – is performed by Wasted Aces. Besides KISS tunes, the band will be giving away KISS prizes including shirts and memorabilia. A KISS karaoke contest with a $50 prize for the best performance starts the concert. JULIE ANNE: A concert by jazz singer Julie Anne will be hosted by Steve Nannini at the Steinway Piano Gallery. She will be accompanied by Jeff Haskell, piano; Jack Wood, bass; and Fred Hayes, drums. “Jeff (Haskell) and I have learned a lot of new songs, including four by Cole Porter,” says Julie Anne. Her album released in October, “Hey, Daddy!,” has been at the top of the Indie-Music.com jazz chart ever since. All three musicians at the Steinway gig played on the album. Haskell was the music director. The Steinway gallery is an intimate space seating 75 people. Nannini as host will add to the party atmosphere with complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres, served when the musicians mingle with their audience at intermission and after the show. TIFT MERRITT: With “Another Country” (Fantasy), released earlier this year, Merritt travels a folkier path than her earlier, more alt-country work, and it’s a good match. Merritt has a gorgeous voice, and she delivers vocal lines that highlight her talent for sounding both vulnerable and strong within songs that do the same.
