FRIDAY-SATURDAY
SKY ISLAND CHAMBER MUSICIANS: Michael Mulcahy, a member of the legendary brass section from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, comes to Tucson to conduct the Sky Island Chamber Musicians in two special brass and percussion concerts. The concert includes J.S. Bach’s “Toccata” and “Fugue” in D minor and music from Kurt Weill’s “Three Penny Opera.” Sponsored by the Becker Foundation, the proceeds from these concerts will be used to provide scholarships for young brass players pursuing orchestral training programs. MUSIC IN THE PARK: The Arizona Symphonic Winds’ series of four free concerts continues with the concert band joined by internationally acclaimed clarinetist Robert Spring. In honor of Memorial Day, direction of Laszlo Veres leads the band through marches and patriotic music, including “Armed Forces Medley.” Bring lawn chairs, blankets and picnic meals. NIGHT FOR NEW ORLEANS’ MUSIC RISING: This outdoor event includes performances by Mojo Gumbo, Tom Walbank, Black Leather Zydeco and the Bad News Blue Band. Cirque Du Sin will offer a Bourbon Street-themed fire performance. Feed your belly, too, with a crawfish boil and other Cajun and Creole offerings. New Orleans beer from Abita Brewing Co. will be on tap. Proceeds will benefit Music Rising, a charity dedicated to rescuing the musical heritage of New Orleans. Ages 21 and older. “MUSIC UNDER THE STARS”: The Tucson Pops Orchestra, under the direction of Laszlo Veres, celebrates its 53rd year. Sunday’s program features a Memorial Day concert with the Tucson Pops playing patriotic favorites including “Victory at Sea,” “Stars & Stripes Forever,” the Armed Forces Salute and more. Guest clarinet artists Robert Spring and Daniel Veres will perform throughout the concert. MY FATHER, VICTOR BORGE – A DAUGHTER’S REFLECTIONS: Janet Borge Crowle, daughter of the late musician and humorist Victor Borge, presents a program about her father, including anecdotes from his childhood, his musical training, fleeing from Denmark to America to escape the Nazi occupation and highlights of his career. “WORKS OF ART” CHOREOGRAPHERS’ SHOWCASE: As New ARTiculations Dance Theatre founders LeighAnn Rangel Sotomayor and Tammy Rosen prepare to pass the directorial baton to Katie Rutterer so they can concentrate on their children, they will perform a piece about motherhood, “Origin.” First presented in 2003 by a new mother, Sotomayor will have her 8-month-old son on stage, Rosen will perform while pregnantand Kimi Eisele will dance the role of a woman who has had a miscarriage. Also part of the showcase is “3 Dresses,” created by guest choreographer Nathan Dryden; “Reach,” in which Dryden offers a trapeze solo; and “These Walls,” by Renee Blakeley and set to music by Sigur Ros. Several other pieces will be performed as well.
