DNC Chair Howard Dean campaigns for Obama in Tucson on Monday.
National Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean warned about 200 activists on election eve not to screw up what may be the party’s biggest victory in recent memory.
Dean, the former Vermont governor and previous presidential contender, implored the party rank and file to sprint to the finish.
“For 30 hours of work, you get four years of Barack Obama in the White House,” Dean said at a rally outside Pima County Democratic Party headquarters, 4639 E. First St.
Polls open at 6 a.m. Tuesday and close at 7 p.m.
What makes Dean’s 11th-hour visit to John McCain’s home state more interesting is that polls show Obama within 2 to 5 percentage points of the Republican in the Grand Canyon State.
“I guarantee you, if he wins Arizona, he wins the presidency,” Dean said of Obama.
At this point in the campaign, Dean said: “I only go where we have a chance to win.”
State party Chairman Don Bivens also asked Democratic volunteers to keep pushing. “If you are dropping off literature and get tired – and you will – knock on 10 more doors,” he said.
Arizona’s 10 electoral votes are in play, as is U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords’ seat in Congress. The freshman Democrat faces a tough battle against Republican state Senate President Tim Bee. The winner will represent southeastern Arizona and a good slice of Tucson.
