Mysterious Bob Log III reveals all
by Otto Ross on Dec. 25, 2008, under Calendar, Local
Hidden beneath his helmet, Bob Log III is always ready to rock.
Bob Log III is the physical manifestation of randomness. He is also the one-man-band phenomenon that will be crashing through Plush this Wednesday to celebrate New Year’s Eve with the good people of his hometown. With his identity shrouded beneath the protective casing of a helmet, Log thrashes his guitar, bangs drums and incoherently shouts into a microphone hidden within. The consequent sound could be considered brilliant or awful, depending on your perspective. Fortunately, the anomaly that is Log has been gracious enough to grant us an e-interview, providing answers to some of the greatest mysteries of his life, including the origins of his costume and his primitive beginnings.
What got you into playing music and when did you start?
I started as a small child, banging rocks together at school. Other children would crowd around me, gaping in awe at first and then dancing like maniacs. I started charging two cookies per song, and soon I was giving lessons and needed my own security team.
When did you first consider the idea of being a one-man band?
Nobody would talk to me! But for the sake of music I decided to persevere. The glory of music is much, much bigger than my loneliness.
Why do you wear a helmet?
Again we are back to the security issue. I play a song where some nice ladies sit on my knees while I play my guitar and drums and I bounce them up and down. Some of those nice ladies bite. A helmet was the gentlest way to protect myself, as I felt electrocution was too rough. And I am a gentleman.
Where did you get the rest of the costume?
I buy them from old, washed-up, ex-figure skaters. There is a farm for them just outside of Flagstaff.
From where do you draw your inspiration?
My inspiration is a room full of people smiling and dancing and sweating and dancing.
You seem to tour constantly – how do you stay motivated?
That has never been a problem. All I have ever wanted to do is play my guitar, every day. You do not need to be motivated when you are doing exactly what you love.
Where do you most like to play music?
In whatever city, country, room I am in. It is almost like the planet is one giant bar for me to play my guitar and kick (stuff) in. Someone needs to clean the toilet though. It is filthy.
Tell me about your new album.
My new record comes out in February. It is called “My Shit is Perfect.” It is a masterpiece. Not one mistake on it that I didn’t do on purpose. Perfect!
What are your goals for the future?
Very, very simple. Play my guitar every day. I don’t care if it is a little kid’s birthday party or Fuji Rock Festival. Just guitar, every day.
