Our Opinion: Give Food Bank, self some credit
by Tucson Citizen on Dec. 31, 2008, under OpinionThe Community Food Bank – long the bedrock of Tucson’s charities – now must limit its giving to one food box per family per month.
Dramatically increased requests for food have pushed the bank 46 percent over budget for groceries purchased.
But Tucsonans can rally to the cause – and get a $1 tax credit for every $1 donated, under Arizona law for donations to agencies that serve the poor.
Every $1 donated to the Community Food Bank brings in $9 worth of food, thanks to bulk buys made through an association of food banks across the nation.
So if you give $100, you get $100 off your state tax bill. Better still, you buy $900 worth of food for hungry Tucson families – at no cost whatsoever to you, thanks to the tax credit.
We always support tax-credit donations to needy schools. But with kids going hungry these days, we encourage you to give to the Food Bank, too.
