Knowing that it takes four games in the playoffs to win a state championship, the Ironwood Ridge girl’s soccer team has divided its schedule into four-game segments.

After a 1-0 win Wednesday night over defending Class 5A Division II state champion Rincon/University, Ironwood Ridge is 2-0 in its current four-game block and improved to 13-3 on the season.

“This was an important game for us,” Ironwood Ridge coach Sean Watkins said. “We knew winning the region was going to come through Rincon based on last year’s results.

“. . . We know it’s four games to win the state championship. We have this goal each time to win four in a row.”

Wednesday’s win put the rest of the 5A-II Southern Division on alert.

Sarah McIntosh notched the game’s only goal in the 28th minute, scoring into an open net after Camie Barbera’s shot bounced off Amanda Brady’s hand.

“I was just following up on the shot,” said McIntosh, one of the Nighthawks three seniors. “I thought Camie had it. I saw the keeper fumble with (the ball) and I was able to be there for the rebound.”

Ironwood Ridge, second in the AIA’s 5A-II power rankings, lost 11 seniors from last year’s team that made the playoffs as a No. 15 seed.

Throughout Wednesday’s game, the Nighthawks’ speed consistently created problems for Rincon.

“It was a very intense game and we were a little panicked in the first 18 minutes,” Ironwood Ridge defender Chelsea Reeves said. “After the goal, we started connecting more passes and dominated Rincon.”

She prevented the game from going into overtime when she averted Rincon’s best scoring chance in the 54th minute.

After Nadine Merheb’s shot bounced off Ironwood Ridge keeper Brooke Seavitt, the rebound sat in the middle of the box and Tamara Pridgett had an opportunity to score, but Reeves cleared the ball before a shot was taken.

“I always drop back and think of myself as the second keeper,” Reeves said. “If anything, never let the ball go in. I got back there and got it out before a Rincon player could even get a foot on it.”

Rincon drops to 5-3 overall, 1-1 in league play. The game was Ironwood Ridge’s first in the region.

Salpointe 3, Tucson High 0: At Salpointe, Rebekah DeJonghe scored twice and Kelli Ford once as the Lancers defeated 5A-I Southern Division foe Tucson High.

Salpointe keeper Cat Lena and a strong Lancers defense pitched the shutout, helping the team improve to 11-3 and 1-0 in league play.

Tucson High drops to 6-6-2 overall, 0-1 in region games.

Girls basketball

Cienega wasn’t a hospitable host Wednesday night.

The Bobcats outscored visiting Scottsdale Notre Dame Prep 24-1 in the first quarter en route to a 53-24 win.

Four Cienega players scored in double figures – Alyssa Deal (12), Becca Jaeger (11), Megan Placencia (10) and Ashlee Brawley (10).

Boys basketball

Flowing Wells’ A.J. Koch scored a game-high 29 points on his home court Wednesday, but it wasn’t enough in a 68-59 loss to Phoenix Sandra Day O’Connor.

CHANDLER – The Ironwood Ridge High School football team knew it would have to play the prefect game to pull off the upset.

But the quest for perfection turned to frantic desperation in the blink of an eye.

Peoria Centennial’s lightning-quick superstar John Hughes took the opening kickoff of Friday’s Class 5A Division II semifinal game 90 yards down the west sidelines of Chandler High’s Austin Field for a touchdown, setting the tone early in a lopsided 41-14 win by the Coyotes..

No. 1-seed Centennial intercepted the ball on No. 4 Ironwood Ridge’s second offensive play, setting up a 5-yard Hughes touchdown run, putting the shell-shocked Nighthawks in a 14-0 hole just 1 minute and 20 seconds into the game.

“Mistakes put us in the hole and just took us out of our game plan pretty early on,” said Ironwood Ridge coach Gary Minor, whose team turned the ball over five times. “. . . When Jake (Fischer, the team’s four-year starting linebacker/running back who has committed to play at the University of Arizona next year) went down with the injury (in the second quarter), we just couldn’t run the ball on them anymore. They were by far the best defensive team we’ve played against this year.”

With seven minutes left in the second quarter, Fischer aggravated injuries to both shoulders he first suffered in the team’s Oct. 31 loss at Sunnyside, taking him out of the offensive game plan and limiting his role on defense.

After rushing for 216 yards and a pair of touchdowns in his team’s Nov. 21 quarterfinal win over Sunnyside, Ironwood Ridge’s only chance to knock off Arizona’s premiere program of the past three years seemed to be in its ability to control the game on the ground.

“(We played well) and I’m not taking anything away from them,” Fischer said, “but I think this would have been a whole different game if we would have stuck to our game plan, if we wouldn’t have had all those injuries. But the score doesn’t say that.”

And while Ironwood Ridge admirably tried to keep itself in the game in the first half, cutting the lead to 14-7 at the end of the first quarter and 27-14 at halftime, Centennial’s defense used the luxury of a big lead to exploit its opponent’s obvious inexperience and discomfort with the passing game.

Ironwood Ridge sophomore quarterback Tyler D’Amore threw for 255 yards and a touchdown, but he was sacked several times and forced many passes in desperation, leading to three interceptions.

Senior wide receiver Scott Campbell capped off his high school career with the game of his life, hauling in four passes for 168 yards.

But the night belonged to Centennial, a team that has gone 40-1 in the past three seasons and plays for its third straight 5A-II title next Saturday at University of Phoenix Stadium against Avondale Westview.

Hughes, the diminutive 5-foot-6 running back who has rushed for more than 1,400 yards this season and scored 34 touchdowns, said Friday’s performance from the Ironwood Ridge defense wasn’t what he expected.

“It wasn’t at all,” Hughes said. “I’ve seen the film on them and they’re a real good defense, but I guess they didn’t come out (ready).

“I guess we wanted it more than them.”

Actually, the Ironwood Ridge run defense played better than the scoreboard would suggest, holding Hughes in relative check (17 carries for 52 yards).

But he still scored four times Friday with the kick return and three rushing touchdowns.

Ironwood Ridge senior linebacker/tight end Ray Cottman, who finished the season with 120 tackles and had a 68-yard touchdown reception Friday, was frustrated after the game wondering what could have been.

“They’re beatable – anyone is beatable and we knew that,” Cottman said.

“We weren’t scared of them. We just needed to show what Nighthawks football is all about, but it just got away from us tonight and that didn’t happen.”

Said Minor of losing several seniors who made up the core of what has been Tucson’s best defensive unit the past two years, “It’s going to be tough, but we’ll be back.

“We have a lot of young guys at the skill positions and we’ll be back . . . I’m real proud of our kids and the way they fought. We just didn’t have it tonight. Things didn’t go our way.”

Ironwood Ridge linebacker/ tight end Ray Cottman summed up perfectly his team’s revenge victory over Sunnyside 24-17 on Friday night.

“It’s great to have Jake back,” Cottman said after Ironwood Ridge advanced to the Class 5A Division II state semifinals in two weeks against No. 1 Peoria Centennial.

Jake Fischer, returning from an injury in last month’s 27-24 regular-season loss to Sunnyside, played the kind of game a future Division-I football player (he’s orally committed to the University of Arizona) is expected to play.

Fischer, known more for his play at linebacker, ran for 216 yards on 24 carries Friday in the win against the Blue Devils, who knocked Ironwood Ridge out of the state playoffs last year.

Fischer’s 126 first-half yards helped stake the Nighthawks (10-2) to a 10-0 halftime lead, the same as in the team’s first meeting at Sunnyside in October.

This time, the Nighthawks kept the advantage. They went up 17-0 on Fischer’s second touchdown, a 16-yard blast to start a wild fourth quarter that saw the Blue Devils (9-3) make two huge mistakes.

The first was a roughing-the-punter penalty that gave Ironwood Ridge a midfield first down. The second was allowing Cottman to race 60 yards with a short kickoff to give Ironwood Ridge a 24-7 lead.

“I was surprised they kicked in the air – we were ready for the onside kick,” Cottman said. “All of a sudden, I had it.”

Sunnyside didn’t fold despite trailing by 17 points. After all, the Blue Devils have won at least one playoff game 10 straight years.

“They are always a tough, hard-hitting team and we have a lot of respect for them,” Cottman said.

Ironwood Ridge used some new plays on offense, going to a shotgun with running back Adrian Brahler flanked wide.

“They were confused,” said Nighthawks coach Gary Minor. “We took advantage of that.”

And Fischer repeatedly powered through holes for long gains.

“We have an offensive line with two of the best guys I’ve ever had – (seniors) Marvin Snodgrass and Marcus Klune,” Minor said.

Sunnyside quarterback Jesus Vega put his team on the board with a 72-yard TD pass to Marty Calles in the fourth quarter.

A blocked kick recovered for a touchdown later in the fourth made it a 24-17 game. Sunnyside was just a few seconds away from getting the ball for a last shot with a chance to tie.

But Fischer, playing more outside linebacker than in the middle, helped limit the visitors to 13 yards on the ground.

“I’ve been on teams that have beaten these same guys just twice since Pop Warner,” he said. “This is great.”

The bigger they are, the harder they fall, and Ironwood Ridge yelled “timber!” all evening Friday. Speed won out over size in a big way as the Nighthawks rolled to a 51-9 Class 5A-II first-round state playoff victory over visiting Phoenix North.

Next the No. 4 Nighthawks get another shot at 5A-II Southern Region foe and No. 5-seeded Sunnyside, which beat them 27-24 two weeks ago.

“It’s just like last year but reversed,” said Nighthawks linebacker Ray Cottman, who had to operate for the second straight week in the middle without injured standout linebacker Jake Fischer. “We’re ready. It’s going to be physical like last time but we have them here.”

Fischer should return next week against Sunnyside. The Nighthawks beat the Blue Devils in the regular season last year, but lost to them in the playoffs in the second round.

Ironwood Ridge junior Adrian Brahler had a big game with 105 rushing yards and a 45-yard touchdown catch. Cottman, at tight end, caught 94 yards worth of Tyler D’Amore’s 12-for-16 passing. Wide receiver Scott Campbell caught six passes for two TDs.

Ironwood Ridge ran up 110 yards in penalties, but head coach Gary Minor will take it under the circumstances because of Phoenix North’s size.

“You outweigh them by 100 pounds! C’mon!” shouted one North fan at his team.

That was a bit of a stretch, but the Nighthawks had to rely on quickness and strength to dominate.

“I was concerned about their size,” Minor said. “We saw on film they have some weapons. And their running back was a load, as good and tough a guy as we have faced all year.”

North’s 5-foot-8, 220-pound back Treven Masse required almost all 11 Nighthawks to bring him down every time he ran. But he gained just 57 yards, a credit to the swarming defense.

A first half dogfight evolved into a second half romp as Ironwood Ridge scored the final 30 points of the game to down Mountain View 37-8 to close out the regular season.

The host Nighthawks (8-2, 2-1 5A South-II) took the opening drive of the second half and capped it with a bootleg pass to tight end Ray Cottman that went 39-yards as Ironwood Ridge took a 14-8 lead and never looked back.

“I think that was key,” said Ironwood Ridge coach Gary Minor. “We thought that pass to Cottman, our tight end, would be there.”

Despite dominating the possession battle in the first half, Ironwood Ridge could not crack the end zone in the first quarter. Their first four drives all started inside Mountain View territory, but a fumble at the goal line and a strong Mountain View pass rush, stopped the Nighthawks.

In the second quarter, Ironwood Ridge quarterback Tyler D’Amore found Adrian Brahler on a 34-yard pass, setting up a 1-yard Brahler touchdown run for the 7-0 lead.

D’Amore was 11 of 18 for 189 yards and two touchdowns.

Mountain View (4-6, 1-2) answered on the next drive, scoring its lone touchdown on a 1-yard C.J. Evenson run set up by a 14-yard Myles Williams run.

Mountain View had the extra point blocked, but got a safety on the next series for the 8-7 lead.

Cottman caught two second-half touchdowns and Brahler ran for two more.

Cottman also anchored a defense that was missing star linebacker Jake Fischer, who was injured in the first half of the Oct. 31 Sunnyside game and missed Friday’s Mountain View game as a precaution before the playoffs.

“Any time you can beat your rival without a top player is good,” Minor said.

Sunnyside quarterback Jesus Vega summed up 48 minutes of intensity Friday night.

“No better feeling,” he said after the Blue Devils’ 27-24 win over visiting Ironwood Ridge.

Last season, the Blue Devils knocked Ironwood Ridge out of the Class 5A Division II playoffs. Both teams will go back again this year, although Sunnyside now sits in the driver’s seat for the 5A Southern-II region.

Vega, a senior who transferred from Cholla to join brother and teammate Manny Aguilar, threw two interceptions in the first half, stalling the Blue Devils offense.

But he and his brother carved up the Nighthawks defense in the second half in coming back from a 24-14 deficit.

Vega threw two touchdowns in the second half and for 267 yards for the game, while Aguilar rushed 18 times for 123 yards and the 4-yard winning touchdown scamper with 7:10 to play.

Ironwood Ridge had the intention of repaying the state game last November. Not that it mattered to Sunnyside coach Richard Sanchez.

“I don’t read the newspaper much so I don’t know,” he said.

“They got behind us in the first half and completed some big passes. The second half, no deep balls against us.”

Instead, it was the Blue Devils who went deep and often. Sunnyside (7-2, 2-0) also got its run game going, including a 36-yard touchdown run by Alfred Leon in the third quarter to cut Ironwood Ridge’s lead to 17-14.

Later, Brandon Vaughn caught a 12-yard scoring pass from Vega to bring Sunnyside within 24-21, setting up Aguilar’s go-ahead run.

The Nighthawks couldn’t answer the physical challenge, and were outgained 451-267.

“They exploited some of our defensive weaknesses the second half,” said Ironwood Ridge coach Gary Minor, whose team fell to 7-2 overall and 1-1 in region play.

Sabino's Sam Sharawara runs for a touchdown against Ironwood Ridge.

The Sabino High School football team proved its win over Ironwood Ridge five weeks ago was no fluke.

The Sabercats won 42-3 Friday night over the visiting Nighthawks in a Class 4A Division I quarterfinal game.

Sabino had beaten Ironwood Ridge 38-7 on Oct. 13.

The top-seeded Sabercats are next in action on Dec. 1 against No. 5 Scottsdale Chaparral, which beat Cienega 44-12 Friday night.

The game will be played at Tucson High.

Sabino made a quick statement. Travis Graham sprinted 75 yards for a score to give the Sabercats a quick 7-0 lead. He broke through the line and sprinted down the sideline.

“Everybody thought I was going down. I kept running hard and bounced it outside and didn’t give up,” Graham said. “Since we played them last time, we knew that they vastly improved and we were nervous. We did the right things and got it done.”

The Sabercats slowed No. 8 Ironwood Ridge all night and never gave it a chance to gain momentum. Sabino held the Nighthawks to 29 yards on the ground and pressured backup quarterback Chris Carlson.

Ironwood Ridge was missing starting quarterback Bobby Farley because of illness.

“I am proud of our guys tonight,” said Sabino coach Jay Campos. “They came out with intensity and played hard.

“We had a lot of heat on Carlson (all game) and got good penetration. . . . Graham set the tone of the game.”

Carlson finished with 110 yards on 11 completions, but was picked off twice, including one returned 100 yards for a score by Nick Birgel.

Jason Nottingham hit Carlson as he was releasing the ball, Birgel caught it and took off the other way to make it 28-0.

“He wasn’t my man in the first place. I went into the flat and had a convoy,” Birgel said. “My teammates supported me and it was awesome. I thought I wasn’t going to make it, and they are a good team. We beat a really great team.”

Nearly a minute later, Sabercat quarterback Justin Randall connected on a 50-yard pass to Sam Sharawara to put the game out of reach at 35-3.

Sabino had the chance to blow the game open in the first half, but turnovers played a large part in keeping the score within reach at halftime at 14-0.

Randall was intercepted three times, twice in the second half, but the Nighthawks were unable to capitalize.

“We played a tough game in many respects. This was a much closer game than in October,” Ironwood coach Gary Minor said. “We made our share of mistakes and were without (Farley). We lost to an outstanding team.”

Sabino beat visiting Chaparral 28-6 in the fifth game of the year. The Firebirds were missing six starters from suspensions for that contest.

“We have Chaparral again and we have our work cut out for us,” Campos said. “Luckily we have a couple of weeks before that to get healed, and it should be another great semifinal game between us.”

Football playoff wins can be special moments in a school’s history.

Picking up that first playoff win over an archrival can be monumental.

That’s what No. 8 seed Ironwood Ridge High School did Friday night, beating Amphitheater Public Schools rival and No. 9 seed Canyon del Oro for the second straight week.

The 20-0 win advances the Nighthawks to the second round of the Class 4A Division I state playoffs.

Ironwood Ridge won last week’s game 14-7.

“Our schools are just two minutes away and you go to Nico’s (restaurant) or whatever and everyone is just talking to each other about football and now we got this two times in one season. It’s just awesome,” said Ironwood Ridge quarterback Bobby Farley.

Ironwood Ridge gets a tough test next week at top-seeded Sabino.

“It was just a great effort tonight,” Nighthawks coach Gary Minor said. “Our kids played real hard all night and CDO is an outstanding team, but for the second week in a row we proved we were better.”

The Nighthawks scored on their first possession of the game, a 1-yard run by D’juan Cherry, and took a 20-0 lead at halftime while dominating the Dorados’ offense all night.

“I think our kids were real excited about playing and I thought we could do a few things, but they took everything away from us and whatever could go wrong did go wrong for us tonight,” CDO coach Pat Nugent said.

“They just outplayed us right from the start. They were a better football team tonight and I give those kids a lot of credit on the Ironwood Ridge side.”

Ironwood Ridge held Dorados quarterback Daniel Nicholas to just 21 yards passing while also dismantling CDO’s running game, holding the Dorados to minus 57 yards on the ground.

“Our defense was just inspiring tonight. Their quarterback didn’t get a chance to set his feet,” Minor said. “He’s one of the leading passers in southern Arizona and he didn’t get a chance to do anything tonight.”

Cherry led the Nighthawks with 123 yards rushing on 26 carries while Farley completed 10 of 18 passes for 115 yards and two touchdowns, one to Bryan Martinez and the other to Colin Gilbert.
