Midwife Alvarez, 104, aided neighbors

JOSEPH BARRIOS Citizen Staff Writer

Loretta Lucero Alvarez not only helped deliver much of Tucson’s Pascua Yaqui community as a midwife, but she acted as surrogate mother to dozens of others on the reservations.

”People would always be over. It was a real welcome, open house,” said Olga Romero, her granddaughter. ”It’s like everybody knew they could visit.”

Ms. Alvarez, after whom Kino Community Hospital’s labor delivery unit was named, died Monday.

Although she was generally credited with being 104 years old, Romero said family members believe Ms. Alvarez was at least 110.

She was born in northern Mexico, Romero said. She later married Luis Alvarez, a railroad worker. They lived in Nogales, Ariz., for several years before moving to Tucson after World War I.

Ms. Alvarez is best remembered as a midwife who spent more than 50 years helping deliver babies. Until she was about 80 years old, Ms. Alvarez would minister care to anyone, whether Yaqui or not, who needed her at delivery time.

She had 14 children of her own, but only one son, Pedro Alvarez, is still living. Aside from her children, 27 grandchildren, 70 great grandchildren and 45 great-great grandchildren, she had a stream of friends and neighborhood children who called her ”Mama” or ”Nana.”

Ms. Alvarez was fluent in both Yaqui and Spanish, but had never attended school. She continued to host friends and family on a regular basis in recent years.

In August 1994, Kino Community Hospital named its labor and delivery unit after her. Hospital officials, wanting to promote the sense of community and compassion in their midwife program, said Ms. Alvarez was the perfect choice.

”That’s something I really don’t want to be forgotten,” Romero said. ”She really did a lot for the Yaqui Nation.”

A memorial service will be held Friday at Romero’s house, 725 W. Calle Sur, beginning at 4 p.m., followed by a rosary at 7.

The service will continue into the night as part of Yaqui tradition, Romero said. A Mass will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. at Santa Rosa Mission, 2015 N. Calle Central, followed by burial at Holy Hope Cemetery, 3555 N. Oracle Road.

Kennedy was devoted to Habitat

LARRY COPENHAVER Citizen Staff Writer

When Jack Kennedy retired eight years ago, he pursued two of his passions – helping others, and photography – as a Tucson volunteer with Habitat for Humanity.

A memorial service will be held tomorrow for Mr. Kennedy, 83, who died Monday of pneumonia. The service will start at 3 p.m. in the lobby of The Fountains at La Cholla retirement center, 2001 W. Rudasill Road, where he lived.

”He was a caring, sensitive individual who wanted to help anyone in need,” said Bob Tinker, a board member of Habitat for Humanity, which builds homes for the needy.

To raise money for the program, Mr. Kennedy would take pictures and offer them for sale, said Lois Kennedy, his wife of 48 years. He never priced the photos but accepted donations for Habitat.

”People were very generous,” she said.

He also sponsored speakers who came to the center to promote Habitat for Humanity, Tinker said.

That was successful, he said. ”They helped build several houses, about six or so.”

Mr. Kennedy became involved when one of the residents in the retirement center enlisted him and others to participate in the program, his wife said.

”We got involved with a needy family who received one of the houses. They were so proud.”

Mr. Kennedy retired from his computer software manufacturing job in Sherman Oaks, Calif., eight years ago and moved to Tucson.

”That’s where we met, in Sherman Oaks,” Lois Kennedy said. He was born in Elmhurst, Ill.

He never had the luxury of a formal education in computer technology, she added. ”He was selftaught. He just learned his job.”

Besides his wife, Mr. Kennedy is survived by his sister, Betty Ullrich of Sierra Vista, and nephew Wayne Clarke of Lafayette, Colo.

Donations may be made in Mr. Kennedy’s name to Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 43235, Tucson, Ariz. 85733.

Pecard arraigned; charges grow today

PHOENIX – An Army police officer who duped prison and Maricopa County sheriff’s officials into thinking he was a military investigator was arraigned yesterday on 10 charges, including fraud and sexual abuse.

David Michael Pecard, who sheriff’s investigators say has used as many as eight aliases, was asked by Superior Court Judge Ronald Reinstein whether Pecard was his real name. ”Defendant stands as named,” he responded.

Pecard already had an initial appearance on four charges but faced six new ones today. He is accused of computer fraud, sexual abuse, forgery and fraudulent schemes.

Pecard’s attorney for the hearing was public defender William Peterson, who had no comment.

Sheriff’s officials believe Pecard posed as a high-level military investigator in order to gain access to investigations of various law enforcement agencies – including the FBI, the U.S. Customs Service and the sheriff’s office.

He allegedly misidentified himself as an investigator to guards at the Maricopa County tent city jail, where officials say he removed two female inmates and sexually abused them.

His trial is scheduled for March.

Head-on crash is fatal for woman

Monday, December 30th, 1996

A Tucson woman died after her car was hit head-on by another car on La Cholla Boulevard on Friday night, deputies said. A teen was seriously injured in the crash.

Helen Irene Weaver, 76, of West Dale Haven Circle was pronounced dead at Tucson Medical Center after the 7:30 p.m. crash.

Weaver had been driving north on North La Cholla near Orange Grove Road in a1977 Lincoln sedan. Brandon Travis O’Leary, 16, who was driving a 1991 Toyota sedan, allegedly crossed over the center lane of La Cholla and collided with her car, deputies said.

O’Leary, 16, of North Magic Lane, was taken to University Medical Center with serious injuries, said Sgt. Michael G. O’Connor, a Pima County Sheriff’s Department spokesman. He was listed in guarded condition today.

Sheriff’s detectives have not determined why O’Leary’s car crossed the center line, O’Connor said. No citations or arrests have been made and the investigation continues, he said.

Antonia Bernal, 91, ‘loved deeply’

A visitation will be held tomorrow for the native Tucsonan at Tucson Mortuary.

NORMAN PECKHAM Citizen Staff Writer

A visitation will be held tomorrow for Antonia Gallego Bernal, a Tucson native who was the cornerstone of a large family that includes 20 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Bernal died Thursday surrounded by family members at her home in South Tucson. She was 91.

The visitation will be held from 4 to 10 p.m. at Tucson Mortuary, 204 S. Stone Ave.

Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Santa Cruz Church, 1220 S. Sixth Ave. Burial will be at Holy Hope Cemetery, 3555 N. Oracle Road.

Mrs. Bernal, who was born in Tucson in 1905, was raised on a ranch near Sahuarita, said one of her granddaughters, Isabel Burruel Smutzer.

”For a living she would make tamales. That’s how she’d get her livelihood, selling tamales for 50 cents a dozen,” Burruel Smutzer said. She said her grandmother stopped selling tamales in 1950.

But when she did make tamales for a living, one of Mrs. Bernal’s sons would ride on horseback to different ranches near the one she grew up at to sell the tamales, Burruel Smutzer said.

In the mid-1940s, Mrs. Bernal moved to a home in South Tucson, and lived there until her death.

Mrs. Bernal had been in poor health since suffering a stroke shortly before Thanksgiving, Burruel Smutzer said.

She said her grandmother was surrounded by family members ”around the clock” from the time of her stroke up until her death.

Burruel Smutzer described her grandmother as a ”very happy woman” who often would help those in need.

”She was always real good about helping the needy in the neighborhood,” her granddaughter said. ”They would come and she’d give them lunch. She was real good about that.”

Mrs. Bernal’s hobbies included listening to music, and playing a Mexican card game called La Malia .

”She’d like to have a beer once in a while,” Burruel Smutzer recalled, chuckling. ”She’d like to have a beer and play cards and eat chicken. She loved chicken.”

She couldn’t wait to see her family, her granddaughter said.

”She cried when you walked through the door, because she was so happy to see you and she cried when you left, because she was so sad to see you leave. It was so sincere,” Burruel Smutzer recalled.

She said her grandmother will be missed greatly.

”She was loved deeply. She’s left an impression on so many people,” Burruel Smutzer said.

Mrs. Bernal, married three times, outlived each husband and three of her children.

She is survived by three sons, Jesus Burruel, Fernando Burruel and José Bernal; two daughters, Virginia Tellez and Rosario Mendibles; and a sister, Genoveva Bermudez, all of Tucson.

Missing couple found dead in desert

Friday, December 27th, 1996

The Associated Press

PHOENIX – The bodies of a missing couple whose memories were failing were found lying side by side next to a desert trail about 300 yards from where their car had been found earlier southwest of Phoenix.

Authorities speculated that George Palmer, 84, and his 81-year-old wife, Jenevieve, may have gotten lost and died of exposure.

”It looked like they both laid down and fell asleep,” said Warren Youngman, a Bureau of Indian Affairs investigator. He said there was no sign of foul play.

The couple had last been seen at home on Saturday. Dixie Pickett of Phoenix, the couple’s daughter, said her parents had told her they were going to a friend’s house for dinner. However, she said, she knew all of her parents’friends were dead and reported the couple missing later in the day.

A ground and air search began early yesterday, two days after three people out four-wheeling the desert found the couple’s car stuck up to its axles in sand. After learning from a television newscast on Christmas Day that the couple was missing, the men had alerted authorities.

”From what we’re looking at right now, it looks like they got out of their car and followed a dirt road” toward Phoenix International Raceway but then didn’t make it that far, Youngman said.

Their bodies were found on the Gila River Indian Reservation near a winding trail covered with dense thickets of mesquite and tamarisk, about 1 1/2 miles from the racetrack, Youngman said.

The Palmers had been seen Sunday afternoon when they stopped at a house near Mayer to ask for directions to Interstate 17, said Sgt. Mike Torres, a Phoenix police spokesman. Since they seemed disoriented, the Mayer residents called police to assist the Palmers but ”they just took off” before police arrived, Torres said.

They also had been seen Saturday night when they ran out of gasoline near Wilhoit, southwest of Prescott. A passer-by gave some gasoline to the Palmers, then followed them into town and apparently believed the couple would be all right at that point.

9 grid deaths spark concern

When high school athletes take the field or court, most realize the chance for injury always exists.

The large majority of athletes never experience a major injury during their prep careers. But for the unfortunate ones, a sports injury not only can rob the youngster of an athletic career, it can create lasting physical problems.

Officials say athletes, coaches and parents should be concerned but not overly alarmed by a sharp increase in the number of football-related deaths across the country in 1995.

While data from the just-completed 1996 season is still being tabulated, the figures from 1995 showed that nationally, nine players died from football-related injuries or heat stroke last year.

That marked an increase of eight over the previous year and the most fatalities in the sport since the same number died seven years ago, according to a study conducted by the University of North Carolina.

”This is a major concern with every state association in the country,” said Charlie Adams, president-elect of the National Federation of State High School Associations. ”It is something all of us have taken to heart. We have gone long and hard at this thing, feeling like this is one of the most important things in our athletic program.”

Locally, Tucson was spared this fall of any footballrelated deaths. Furthermore, no high school football players in the city suffered serious spinal cord injuries despite some scares at Sahuaro and Cholla.

Sahuaro’s Pat Gallagher and Cholla’s John Denny were both taken from the field on stretchers this season with neck injuries. Fortunately, no serious or long-lasting effects were felt from the injuries, which were termed as ”stingers” by the coaches.

A handful of top players missed games due to injury.

Flowing Wells quarterback John Kashner Jr. suffered a separated shoulder in the season opener, but returned three weeks later. However, Nogales’ star running back Jason Brenner fractured an ankle midway through the season and was lost for the remaining games.

Buena running back Carnell Broady missed significant time with a separated shoulder, and Sabino tailback Scott McCray missed nearly half the season with a knee injury. In addition, Rincon/University receiverdefensive back-punter Quin Davis suffered serious sprains to both ankles and missed three games.

Before the nine deaths in 1995, one player died from a football-related injury in 1994 and four in 1993. The five heat stroke deaths last year were the most since seven football players died in 1972.

Ron Cunningham, a spokesman for the National Athletic Trainers Association, a trade group representing 22,000 athletic trainers nationwide, agreed with Adams, saying football-related deaths often run in cycles.

”What I can tell you from our experience is that football is no more dangerous than it was in the previous year or the year before that,”said Cunningham. ”Over the long haul, (the deaths) pretty much equal out.”

The Dallas association is one year into a three-year national study on the severity of injuries in 10 high school sports, including football. A similar study was done a decade ago.

A NATA study in 1995 showed that 45 percent of football injuries occur to the legs, 25 percent are experienced in the shoulder or arm, 14 percent involve the head, neck or spine and that 9 percent are absorbed by the torso.

The study also revealed that 27 percent of all football injuries are diagnosed as sprains while another 22 percent were muscle strains. Only 6 percent of all football-related injuries were fractures.

• Zimmermann honored

Kevin Zimmermann, a goalkeeper for the University of Illinois at Springfield, has been named a first-team NAIA All-American soccer player.

The former Sahuaro High and Yavapai College star finished the season with 12 shutouts and a 0.72 goals-per-match average. He ended his career with the Prairie Stars with 23 shutouts and a 0.62 goals-per-match average for two seasons.

Zimmermann was also selected to play in the 1997 UMBRO Select All-Star Classic Jan. 30-Feb. 2 at Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The game combines players from NCAA Division II and III and NAIA. The All-Star Game is set for Feb. 2.

• Dial winners named

Grace Park of Scottsdale and Grant Irons of The Woodlands, Texas, have been named the 1996 winners of the Dial Award, presented to America’s top high school athlete/scholars.

Park is the nation’s junior girls golf champion and is a senior at Horizon High. She has committed to attend Arizona State.

Irons is a nationally ranked football star at The Woodlands High.

Parks and Irons were chosen by a nationwide panel of high school athletic directors, sports journalists, academicians and athletic federation members.

The two will receive their awards during the Phoenix Open Pro-Am Dinner in Scottsdale on Jan. 21. Dial will present a $5,000 grant to each of their high schools.

Bisbee man dies after I-10 rollover

Travis James McMahon, the Bisbee man injured shortly before 7 a.m. Monday in a one-car rollover on Interstate 10, died yesterday of his injuries, a state Department of Public Safety sergeant said.

McMahon, 19, who had been on life-support equipment since arriving at University Medical Center shortly after the wreck, died at 10:35 a.m. yesterday, Sgt. Ed Slechta said.

Investigators had blamed the wreck on highway fatigue, Slechta said.

McMahon’s wife, Jackie Flores-McMahon, 21, their son, Daniel McMahon, 10 months, and her son from a previous relationship, Jesse Flores, 5, were passengers in the 1988 Chevrolet Blazer that McMahon was driving. They were not seriously injured, officials said.

Slechta said McMahon fell asleep at the wheel while driving from Bisbee to Bakersfield, Calif., to visit Flores-McMahon’s family for Christmas.

McMahon was heading west on I-10 near the South Craycroft Road exit when his car drifted off the right side of the road and branches from a roadside paloverde tree hit the windshield, waking McMahon, Slechta said.

McMahon tried to steer back onto the roadway, Slechta said, over-corrected and began fishtailing as he tried to regain control of the vehicle.

Slechta said the car went into the highway’s median, rolled 1 1/2 times and came to rest on its right side, throwing McMahon from the car.
