Tucson Medical Center and Northwest Medical Center stand out among Tucson-area hospitals in a national report assessing hospital performance in 31 procedure or treatment areas.
Health Grades, a Colorado-based health-care ratings organization, awards hospitals “excellence awards” annually and rates from poor to best how well hospitals handle hip and knee replacements, gastrointestinal surgeries, stroke victims, women’s health and more.
“Our research shows that while the overall quality of hospital care in America is improving, the gap between the best-performing hospitals and the worst persists,” said Dr. Samantha Collier, Health Grades’ chief medical officer and author of the study. “This persistent gap makes it imperative that anyone planning to be admitted to a hospital do their homework and seek out highly rated facilities.”
Both TMC and Northwest were awarded Stroke Care Excellence awards, Health Grades announced Monday. In addition, TMC was given a Surgery Care award.
The awards and ratings are based on Medicare patient outcomes between September 2004 and September 2006.
The results of the study are posted on the company’s Web site.
Northwest was given 11 “best” ratings in categories that included bowel obstruction, heart attack and heart failure, stroke and women’s health.
TMC received eight “best” ratings for categories that included sepsis, pneumonia, stroke, bowel obstruction and hip-fracture repair.
Health Grades also lists the top 50 hospitals in the nation as well as the top hospitals in the state for five specific procedures: cardiac surgery, critical care, overall orthopedic services, gastrointestinal services and general surgery. State rankings are not listed on the Web site.
According to Health Grades, TMC was listed among the top hospitals in the state for each category, including No. 1 for critical care. Northwest was listed as No. 5 for critical care and gastrointestinal services as well as No. 1 for overall orthopedic services. Carondelet St. Joseph’s Hospital was listed as No. 4 in the state for overall orthopedic services.
“This recognition from Health Grades validates the success of our quality efforts,” said Dr. Palmer Evans, TMC’s chief medical officer. “Our physicians and staff members throughout the hospital have worked hard to earn these results.”
